If you dumb Dutchmen had not voted for Apartheid , SA would be a very different place. Any settlement would have been on our terms. Our economy would be better, we would be part of the world, we could have have had mass white migration. What did we get instead? Sanctions, a sports boycott, pariah status, terrorism. Less than 50 years after 1948, the Dutchmen made a settlement on the enemy's terms - and look what happened. You cunt Afrikaaners can't see it though - it's everyone else's fault.
I was up there too in 1986-87 and, yes, some of the details of this move look like a load of shit, but the sentiment is about right. Jammer, my Engels en my afrikaans is baie sleg.
Looks like a good movie, minus the detail inaccuracies and the Communist crap in the trailer. Can one not make a movie commemorating one of the finest armies of the Cold War instead of trying to denigrate and demonize it with idiotic slurs as we see in the trailer? There was nothing evil about the SADF.
Also, how about a film on Rhodesia? That actually an even greater story to tell IMO. They didn't have institutionalized Apartheid there, and those guys are still being studied by militaries to this day.
A good effort at least. No films tell the story of de-colonialising Africa. At least you guys are giving it some attention. That said, I must agree that the characters look much too soft in this film, and if one is going to make a movie about this time period, one really should try to tell the whole story. Apartheid and Colonialism were not good for many people, but the state of prosperity and daily safety was indeed better then. I think that's why people don't want to touch the subject.

I served at 10AA/LA, Youngsfield. AA/LA = Anti-aircraft / Lugafweer. The day I saw what we were supposed to use to shoot down aircraft, I knew the days of the BOER in South Africa were numbered. 20mm and 35mm AAA canons. LOL. The Cuban jets did victory rolls over the SADF AAA positions on the border. The Cubans kicked BOER ARSE the fuck out of Angola. And the FW de Klerk had no choice but to unconditionally surrender the Boervolk to the ANC. Boers are the weakest link.
'The People's Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola have not been able either, even with the help of the Cubans, to decisively defeat the enemy and drive him out of the territory or the country. The result, frankly speaking, was an impasse.' Given that the Communist forces in Angola were Soviet led, these remarks from a senior Soviet adviser would be remarkable in the wake of 'kicking Boer arse the f**k out of Angola', wouldn't they? 3,000 SADF troops stalemated 75,000 FAPLA and Cubans.
Its too bad that the Cuban Air Force spent their time doing victory rolls over your flak guns rather than doing anything useful on the battlefield. Even if the SADF had hypothetically been defeated at Cuito Cuanavale it would have been FAPLA troops that one the battle, not Cuban ones. In spite of overwhelming numerical superiority the Cubans failed to achieve anything on the ground in Angola.
I was on Operation Savannah. This is movie stuff. Like the previous guy saying...life was too easy in this movie. We went in and did the job that's why the CIA and America stopped us. 3 Months and Angola would have been clean. Fidel we showed you how 18 years olds did the job. 2 SAI Walvisbay 1975
what a lot of shit the lack of text book black stripe face camo, the R1 was replaced by the R4 in the very early 80's The guys beret is wrong where"s the balkie and unit insignia? and for an Ouman returning home it has no houding! We were never like these fucking wimps portrayed in the movie. We did our duty and yes we shot the shit out of Fidels boys and FAPLA! Then we went home and got on with life. 8SAI Jan 86' Ouman
You sound very Angry mate... Just remember this was shot on a budget of $4000 (R40 000) and was done in less than 12 days. Its a short film, meant to get reactions like this to test the waters for a feature. We are only able to make it better with what you tell us, so thanks for the comment, but we already knew the mistakes before filming. We only had access to R1's and to correct you, not all Units received the R4 until 1985/86. Some still used the R1 up to the end of the war.
Maybe, you could just make the SADF look bit less deceitful, just cause they were actually fighting the Cuban, the ANC chose to help the cuban and FAPLA and they were helping UNITA who is black.you probally know this but just a tip if you want south african to accept the movie better
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
86/87 here and I used an R4. I've never even held an FN FAL (R1). If your film does anything, it should be to contradict the Apartheid propaganda myth that the SADF bested the Cubans. It was the Cubans in '87 - '89 who convinced the SADF that continuing their presence in Angola was a purely losing proposition. South Africa had no control of the skies. '89 was the year the Berlin wall came down, and USSR aid to Cuba ended, yet they still threw us out of Angola.
The fact that in spite of not having air superiority the heavily outnumbered SAAF in Angola could provide air support from Mirages and Impalas with impunity is a tribute to its qualitative superiority and a failure of the Cuban Air Force. South African Operations Modular, Hooper and Packer were a total success. They repulsed the FAPLA offensive, routed the retreating elements and drove them west of the Cuito River. A lightly armed 3,000 man SADF force thus routed FAPLA and severely defeated Cuba
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The SADF was crushed at Cuito Carnival. 3 SADF attacks were repulsed. The SADF and Unita lost thousands of men, dead in minefields that their engineers did not clear first. The SADF had no air cover and no means to shoot down Cuban Migs. PW Botha was thrown out of power by his party when he refused to acknowledge that the writing was on the wall, that the war was over and that South Africa had lost. Today still, many SADF soldiers of that time don't understand that they were defeated.
This is simply Red propaganda. The only thing more disgusting than a Red is a traitor. You are a traitor (if you ever served). If you ever studied the battle you would know that your posts here are utter nonsense. Firstly no SADF orders ever mentioned Cuito Cuanavale, there was not a single attack on the town. The Battle took the form of the destruction of FAPLA brigades east of the river. 6 Cuban MiGs were shot down to one SAAF Mirage. Cuban air support was utterly ineffective.
Have you been to a re-education camp since 1994? You should be well aware that the Communist Party line on any issue is usually absolute garbage. The Cubans and FAPLA claimed propaganda victory by 'holding Cuito Cuanavale', impressive given that it was never attacked. Military analysts believe that the Cubans recognized after witnessing the SADF's enormous qualitative military superiority at Cuito Cuanavale that further military confrontation would not succeed.
The only forces that 'lost thousands of men' were FAPLA and UNITA. The SADF lost 31 men. Not bad for a crushing operational victory that crippled FAPLA's ability to attack the Caprivi strip, in spite of being outnumbered at least 6-1 (not counting worthless UNITA troops). Its not hard to believe that many SADF veterans don't recognize that they were defeated; I see nothing to support that view. Please don't post Communist propaganda in future; some of us take our history seriously!
you absoluutly reg n right..soviets counsel cubans to scape the area and save themselves...Russian book tells you all now...SADF were only politically refusing a victory in hand
Agreed, also the new kevlar helmets and R1s just don't go, plus you can't even fit the R1's magazine in the new webbing properly. It couldn't have been difficult to get that right.
@frenchtoothpaste tell me about how movies get everything wrong, just saw the hills have eyes 2 yesterday and some PFC calls a SGT sir!!!, lol looks like hollywood is not the only that fucking does not know crap about the military
Dont understand what the producer is trying to tell us. SANDF we were taught to be one not some useless individual and let us not kid our self see what these so called individuals has done in the world today (steal, take bonuses etc) I also think this video is kak
The Amsterdam appeals court has ordered the prosecution of a Dutch member of parliament for criticising Islam.
Geert Wilders a dutch politician, who made a film called Fitna, critical of islam using facts & quotes from the koran is to be prosecuted by the Dutch court.
If you disagree with this go to the "In defence of Geert Wilders petition" site and sign the petition.
It may be the Netherlands now but its all E.U. so which country and whose speech, film or music is next?
someone should fire the technical director. We stopped using the R1 Rifle looong before we got the nylon battlejackets and kevlar helmets. Should have been R4's boet.
anybody know where we can get hold of the flik "bridge 14" I know it exists because i was a NSM we saw it at camp in 1977 round that time. It gives a true representation of out troops in action during the Angolan bush war
Very well done! Is this film related to or an adaptation of the book "At Thy Call We Did Not Falter"? Will this film be available in the USA? Thanks for the posting!
Watch the full film and you'll see what happens. Its all about putting your main characters in uncomfortable situations for him to try get out of. THat being a situation where he is told to kill a terrorist. For their to be character development, he needs to have an antagonist who almost forces him to do things he doesn't want to. He needs to learn to stand up to that and say no. Regarding the liberal bullshit. That bullshit did still happen, like it or not. Theres two sides to a coin.
Looks like a professionally put together film but why do you have to show off our boys in a bad light-point in question being the scene where they caught the terrorist. If they did not kill him, he might have somehow escaped and or come back to kill them. Liberal bullshit comes shining through in this segment.
When we did our time (85 to 87) we were not allowed to speak about what we were doing for Unita, with 32Bn or anything else. We did what we were told based on the understanding we were given as young men. Now there are movies and books about it. The classic is now I understand more about why and what we did 20 odd years later. You can soon tell the real stories from the bullshit but please keep the detail correct, it helps some of us find peace...............
I agree fully with your comment. Thank you for the advice. We shot this film with R40 000 in 2 weeks. We had very little money to hire help. We originally tried getting R4's but no one had them and had to go with the older R1's. While I was in Cannes I saw a 14 minute war film from USA that was shot for almost 2 million Rand. I was shocked... All I know that is when the feature comes, I will make sure I have more than one ou manne on set. Thank you all for the comments. =D
You need to find some people that want to see the stories told, have you seen the book that Col Jan Beytenbach has put together, he started 32Bn and this is as close to the truth from the SA side as you will get.
Good effort so far. However some work still needs to take place. May I suggest that you acquire the advice and services of former SA Army Officers and Senior Non Commissioned officers who will add valuable advice, attention to detail and polish to what is a good attempt so far. However there are few aspects of military life be it barrack routine or operational aspects which no civilian could ever hope to acquire.
"Dardie Soutpiel" at o4:25 (salty-dick)i got called that many times being from durban where we all smoked dagga on the beach and went surfing, (not really) ha ha.... at the end of the day we would all die for each other.
i remember using the R1 handle inserted inside the webbing belt while marching to make the rifle lighter but don't get caught doing it ha ha.... R1 did used to jam a bit if not kept very clean and sometimes dodgy rounds helped. R4 way superior though.
Used to do the exact same thing! I used the R1for anti-poaching where you wanted a good bit of range and penetration. For closer rnage though the R4 was great. And I am from JHB so everyone made fun of us!
The name of the song is "Run" by Snow patrol. I'll sing it one last time for you Then we really have to go You've been the only thing that's right In all I've done And I can barely look at you But every single time I do I know we'll make it anywhere Away from here Light up, light up As if you have a choice Even if you cannot hear my voice I'll be right beside you dear
This song is by Snow Patrol, Its called Run off their previous album. The double album called Final Straw. Its the album that came out before Eyes Wide Open.
Interesting video! i was in the army, I served in Angola at the age of 18. Brings back memories. I am glad to see that the experiences of what the ANC would like to eradicate will not happen. We did what we did to keep SA safe. Now we see why when we see what the ANC is doing to what was once a beautiful country
I enjoyed the video even though it brought back memories of a period I would like to forget. Many young lives were affected by their experiences fighting a war some did not believe in. Luckily I am not a man and did not have to go through this. I love the music used in this video. I wish you well with this production.
Excellent video. Provokes a sense of pathos and many other deep seated emotions. Impresses at many levels. There is much with which to identify. Clive Holt's book "At Thy Call" is a deeply personal account of a not uncommon reflection on the human condition. The film embraces this deeply personal aspect more than adquately. I would like to obtain a copy. How do I go about this? Good luck with Cannes and beyond.
Nice video. Ill try to check it out. But stop making these damn 30 min. movies and make them 2 hours!! I wish i could join the SADF but im not a SA citizen!! Ill try to but im going to join the American army.
Hi Brabant... the film will be premièring at the Cannes film festival for international audiences this May. Locally in SA, it will be shown at the Winelands festival in Cape Town.
Unfortunately it is only a short film, and is a pilot for a feature that I am currently putting together and am looking for budget. Will keep you guys posted on how it turns out. =D
Please keep me informed regarding response and also details regarding purchase of the DVD. See my comments posted. Well done. My nephew Brett Melvill-Smith was planning to produce something similar. He has mover to Edinburgh. All the best. Hope some financial support emerges for further expansion into full length feature. Perhpas you could speak with Clive Holt as well.
Chrash mate you never got back to me about the dvd I can buy of you? Anyways there is small details in the kit of the soldiers that needs some correcting but otherwise this one is a rocker of a movie!!!
No problem! I should be thanking you for such a thought-provoking movie that challenges you to think. You bring up matters of war, philosophy, politics, and even personal values, and ask that we re-examine things that we take for granted. Far better than what Hollywood peddles out. I hope you will win the Cannes!
Canne is big... and its intimidating, but I really do hope the film gets in there and helps people from outside of Africa to learn what SADF conscription meant for some men in the 80's. Thank you so much for your comments, I really and truly appreciate it. As does the rest of the crew. Thanks again.
You would definitely educate many people. Usually when you see South African soldiers or ex-soldiers portrayed in movies, they're usually as ruthless bad guys who fought for apartheid. Your movie would show that SADF personnel were just like other soldiers around the world, with hopes and fears, had families who cared and loved them, and who felt the agony of war and continue to feel it today long after they left the battlefield.
I wholeheartedly agree. Two thumbs WAY UP for this one! We need to not forget our past or where we come from. Keep up the great work Mate & Best wishes from the United States.
Unless I subscribe to Youtube, no... They only allow films of 10 minutes.
Also, I don't want to put it on the Net yet... Cause festivals like Cannes and Sun dance will not accept the film if its playing online or on a national broadcast. So... Not for the next year. Maybe sometime next year, I'll be getting it online. Sorry.
Agree with Korporaal on the technical aspects. You got the instructors right but your clip has a bit of a political tone that is perhaps not so realistic. Keep in mind that even the average Citizen Force Regiment had 120 % reporting rates until 1990. Most soldiers were actually quite motivated and a type of "Vietnam syndrome" seems exaggerated. More people are/were killed and traumatised by the NSA than by the SADF. But nice try. It is always difficult when one tries to depict the losing side.
Hey Chris, chilling stuff, the music is great. I "was daar" with Malfark Mark, I was the slapgat duitser. The browns look good, the corporals boshoed really looks like a "ou-man's" hat! With the R1's, and even initially with the R4's, we had the hard, green canvas webbing, only later did the nylon stuff come in. Respect for making a movie of this time. Many stories to be told! Wish you luck for the rest of the project.
During my time (1979-1981) we carried R1's and then converted to the first wave of R4's with wooden front stocks. We had that piece-a-shit "staaldak" throughout. It's still in my balsak in my mother's basement - rotting away as it should be.
Hey - I wish my Corporals had been that pleasant to this "Fokken Kommunis".
Keep up the great work - so when do we get a full length feature film?
Feature... man, I can't wait. I still have to shop this student film around and convince people to sponsor the film... if things go well... maybe in the next 2 years, I should have a feature out. But I was offered something interesting last month, so we'll see what happens. ALL i want to do is make a feature... But I need to get it right. So all these comments help. Thanks Mark. Lemme know when ur in SA again, we can go for drinks.
Beret is pulled down over his left ear, this is WRONG,SHOULD BE OVER HIS RIGHT EAR,NO unit badge on beret,he would never have been allowed out on pass without a unit badge on his beret.
This troep would have been horribly f *****d up by the corporals.
Corporals in the clip are to nice.
the guys are carrying R1`s but have Kevlar helmets,R4`s started coming in the early 80`s when we still used the French staaldak piece of crap helmet.
Hey Craig.. . Thanks for the advice man.. Can't tell you how many times I've been told that. Unfortunately we can't get R4's for movies here in SA, for some strange reason... Tried my hardest to get the damn R4's but yeah... Conscerning the Badge on the Beret... We searched high and low and only managed to get the sgt Major version. But hey, its a student film with a low budget... come the feature. WE WILL be paying alot more attention to detail. Think of this as a pilot.
I think you did a great job considering this is student film.
Get the corporals to shout, they never spoke during training, get the green canvas webbing, loose the kevlar helmets get the staaldak crap, when the guys are lining up at the rope wall make sure they are doing push ups, they would never be allowed to stand still whilst waiting to climb up.Only on the border would a guy be allowed cut sleeves, not allowed by a roofie in basic training.Think you did a great clip, would like to see a series
thanks Korporaal... I need all the help I can get... been told so many different things from so many people... But I would love to do a series. I'm currently working on getting a feature together for cinema release... So.. I'll be sure to ask you all for help toward getting it right.
I think that the SADF uniforms and equipment in the late 80s looked a lot better! The kevlar hemets, chest webbing, R4 rifles etc. groups. msn. com/SADFphotos/sadfranks.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=279

Kampfer1445 2 years ago

Thanks.

Maybe, you could just make the SADF look bit less deceitful, just cause they were actually fighting the Cuban, the ANC chose to help the cuban and FAPLA and they were helping UNITA who is black.you probally know this but just a tip if you want south african to accept the movie better

'89 was the year the Berlin wall came down, and USSR aid to Cuba ended, yet they still threw us out of Angola.
rrcatto 2 years ago
The fact that in spite of not having air superiority the heavily outnumbered SAAF in Angola could provide air support from Mirages and Impalas with impunity is a tribute to its qualitative superiority and a failure of the Cuban Air Force. South African Operations Modular, Hooper and Packer were a total success. They repulsed the FAPLA offensive, routed the retreating elements and drove them west of the Cuito River. A lightly armed 3,000 man SADF force thus routed FAPLA and severely defeated Cuba
Kampfer1445 2 years ago 3

The SADF was crushed at Cuito Carnival. 3 SADF attacks were repulsed. The SADF and Unita lost thousands of men, dead in minefields that their engineers did not clear first. The SADF had no air cover and no means to shoot down Cuban Migs. PW Botha was thrown out of power by his party when he refused to acknowledge that the writing was on the wall, that the war was over and that South Africa had lost. Today still, many SADF soldiers of that time don't understand that they were defeated.
rrcatto 2 years ago
This is simply Red propaganda. The only thing more disgusting than a Red is a traitor. You are a traitor (if you ever served). If you ever studied the battle you would know that your posts here are utter nonsense. Firstly no SADF orders ever mentioned Cuito Cuanavale, there was not a single attack on the town. The Battle took the form of the destruction of FAPLA brigades east of the river. 6 Cuban MiGs were shot down to one SAAF Mirage. Cuban air support was utterly ineffective.
Kampfer1445 2 years ago 2
Have you been to a re-education camp since 1994? You should be well aware that the Communist Party line on any issue is usually absolute garbage. The Cubans and FAPLA claimed propaganda victory by 'holding Cuito Cuanavale', impressive given that it was never attacked. Military analysts believe that the Cubans recognized after witnessing the SADF's enormous qualitative military superiority at Cuito Cuanavale that further military confrontation would not succeed.
Kampfer1445 2 years ago 2
The only forces that 'lost thousands of men' were FAPLA and UNITA. The SADF lost 31 men. Not bad for a crushing operational victory that crippled FAPLA's ability to attack the Caprivi strip, in spite of being outnumbered at least 6-1 (not counting worthless UNITA troops). Its not hard to believe that many SADF veterans don't recognize that they were defeated; I see nothing to support that view. Please don't post Communist propaganda in future; some of us take our history seriously!
Kampfer1445 2 years ago 6
you absoluutly reg n right..soviets counsel cubans to scape the area and save themselves...Russian book tells you all now...SADF were only politically refusing a victory in hand

Agreed, also the new kevlar helmets and R1s just don't go, plus you can't even fit the R1's magazine in the new webbing properly. It couldn't have been difficult to get that right.

Chickenwing1313 3 years ago 4
Looks like a professionally put together film but why do you have to show off our boys in a bad light-point in question being the scene where they caught the terrorist. If they did not kill him, he might have somehow escaped and or come back to kill them. Liberal bullshit comes shining through in this segment.

But what was your motive in making this film?
Naniwa00 3 years ago 2
When we did our time (85 to 87) we were not allowed to speak about what we were doing for Unita, with 32Bn or anything else. We did what we were told based on the understanding we were given as young men. Now there are movies and books about it. The classic is now I understand more about why and what we did 20 odd years later. You can soon tell the real stories from the bullshit but please keep the detail correct, it helps some of us find peace...............

Hi Jimborsa,
I agree fully with your comment. =D
Crash6Nemesis 3 years ago
You need to find some people that want to see the stories told, have you seen the book that Col Jan Beytenbach has put together, he started 32Bn and this is as close to the truth from the SA side as you will get.
orne1966 3 years ago 2
To Crash6Nemesis.
Other than that keep up the good work.
Regards

i remember using the R1 handle inserted inside the webbing belt while marching to make the rifle lighter but don't get caught doing it ha ha....

No problem! I should be thanking you for such a thought-provoking movie that challenges you to think. You bring up matters of war, philosophy, politics, and even personal values, and ask that we re-examine things that we take for granted. Far better than what Hollywood peddles out. I hope you will win the Cannes!
suryavajra 3 years ago
Canne is big... and its intimidating, but I really do hope the film gets in there and helps people from outside of Africa to learn what SADF conscription meant for some men in the 80's. Thank you so much for your comments, I really and truly appreciate it. As does the rest of the crew. Thanks again.
Crash6Nemesis 3 years ago
You would definitely educate many people. Usually when you see South African soldiers or ex-soldiers portrayed in movies, they're usually as ruthless bad guys who fought for apartheid. Your movie would show that SADF personnel were just like other soldiers around the world, with hopes and fears, had families who cared and loved them, and who felt the agony of war and continue to feel it today long after they left the battlefield.
suryavajra 3 years ago 2
I wholeheartedly agree. Two thumbs WAY UP for this one! We need to not forget our past or where we come from. Keep up the great work Mate & Best wishes from the United States.

Thanks again Craig!
