Take your own advice and get good gear. You're stills looked phenominal...but the Nikon video is total junk. If you're going to do video with a DSLR...move to Canon. Nikon is magical with stills, but they're lightyears behind on HD video....and it shows in this video, compared to the 5D mkii and 1D mkiv films out there.
The aerial photography was just stunning. The talking head footage relentlessly interspersed into it was jarring and brought me out of the awe and wonder over and over. I've downloaded this to my computer so I can edit out the blah blah.
Thanks, poster, for providing these awesome images for us to enjoy. Please don't be offended that we want the thing itself, not conversation about it.
You are SO lucky to be able to get out & fly whenever youy wish! I don't have a vehicle to go where I want. I am on SSI/SSD, so I can't save the money for the equipment/lessons needed for this! You did a GREAT job with this!
I agree... get good gear if you want to make pictures and videos. The GoPro is excellent and also the action pro are good cameras that shoot full HD and both produce films in full HD format which should be enough for normal purposes.
@Insider1683 you are a little bit jealous i think that you are unable to produce some awesome footage that you has been showcased here in this video. why dont you piss off as i have wasted 3 of minutes of my life reading your post I will never get that back... you are a dickhead.
@kingnelly - I can confirm that the Majority of this footage was NOT shot on a Nikon camera at all, the camera used in this aerial footage was filmed on a full HD Sony F900R tv camera, mounted inside a V14 Cineflex,
Only the Still photos and the footage from the camera mounted on the Glider itself was Nikon - and not HD, only 720p
I know this as the Post Production editing was completed by my Production Company.
Mark Watson did not shoot the video component as he claims, the video you see above was shot by a helicopter crew with a Gyro-Stabilized camera on a helicopter, Mark was only a stills photographer on the shoot and only a few very shots video clips from his Nikon mounted on the Hang-glider were used, 99% of the footage you see was not shot by Mark, but he and Nikon have been claiming the footage as there own. Very misleading and deceitful by Mark and Nikon.
1. More than 80% of the web-clip is filmed on Nikon DSLR camera's
2. D300s footage is labelled as such 'on-screen' for clarification
3. Neither myself nor Nikon claim all footage as our own.
4. In my interview with Nikon I clearly discuss the nose-mounted D300s as my project.
5. After multiple conversations with photographers - none were under the impression you suggest (all were more interested in the remote triggering of the D300s)
Thanks for that information, you mentioned no photographers were confused as to wether the entire clip was shot on the Nikon or not - can I direct your attention to a post by user "mu5hype4" posted 3 months ago-
Hi there, is it just the footage within the hang glider that's done with D300s' or all the footage used in the entire video?
Awesome work!
So out of the few posts there have been people confused about what was shot on the Nikon and what was not,
Insider1683. Sorry you feel misled however this web-clip was intended to showcase the Nikon D300s and customised remote dual trigger. The 20% of video content not filmed on Nikon D300s or D3s cameras was supplied willingly by Red Bull (the owners of the footage) to Nikon, legally and with complete transparency. Your comments come less than a week after Digital Life Expo where I explained a giro-stabilized cineflex camera was used to obtain a portion of footage in this video... see other comment
Further to my last comment, I still think this Video by Mark and Nikon is miss-leading and I think you need to change the subject line specify that only the video footage from the Hang_Glider itself was shot on the Nikon, non of the aerial footage was at all shot on a Nikon.
@Insider1683 yeah i just figured that out now that only like 2 clips were shot with the d300s, the video is very misleading, after watching it the first time you have the impression its all shot with the d300s..which is indeed wrong.
The internal circuitry and remote capture release system had to be customised to do this... so sorry! There is currently no way of doing this without voiding warranty on camera and releases.
Creative imagery is also about unique concepts and idea's and seeing those idea's realized. It is about the process involved, the relationships with your subject and the undertaking involved in capturing the images.
The device used to capture such imagery is all part of this process. Creating a concept, designing a system, getting to right place at the right time and achieving results is what makes the results so worthwhile.
awesome work man and that looks like a great lens.,,,,, re 3.07 correct framing - the stays for the glider are not lined up the same on either side of the frame. Was this how you wanted to frame the shot or was it a mistake due to view finder being hard to look through?. Is there a HD monitor made by nikon that will work with those cams?.. epic video, awesome clouds.
Just a quicky re: the framing.. this was actually caused by the glider struts placing pressure on the camera mount forcing it to twist slightly... unfortunately this can happen during loops and flat-spins when the stresses on the glider are greater. We overcame this with minor camera-mount manipulation however to achieve the desired results the contact of struts and camara body is unavoidable.
i thought it must have been a bugger to mount that cam on the glider,, the stresses it must go through, what sort of g's does he pull whilst doing those moves?
And again that is amazing bit of work man,, is there a monitor option/ HD video out etc on that model cam.
Facts: This dedicated Nikon D300s system is able to do all listed in Comment 3 - utilizing a high quality 12.3MP CMOS sensor for superb image and video reproduction in a remote compact device... something I believe not many imaging equipment manufacturers can claim... and we have the results to prove it. Currently this is the one of the best options available... Yes you can get better stills, Yes you can get better HD-video... but from the same compact device???
In this case, the focus was on the 'tool' for good reason... I believe Joe McNally may agree with me on this.
The options available to photograph high resolution still images able to reproduce a minimum - double page spread in a high-end magazine as well as capture quality motion-picture footage are extremely limited. To shoot at super-wide angle and do all this with a 'simplistic' dedicated trigger in a compact lightweight usable unit further reduces options.
I will not waffle on for long however my response is mainly to nickrtvt2. Nick... i actually agree with you regarding your opinion suggesting the camera is only a tool... however calling me a fool suggests a lack of forethought on your behalf... I am an experienced professional photographer and have photographed adventure sports for over 10 years... I expect you can say the same of yourself to have such strong views?
I figure it is about time I post my own comment on this project... as I happen to be the bloke in the video and the photographer behind the concept of capturing both the video and stills from a single camera on the nose of Jonny Durands hang-glider.
For all those who have an opinion, whether positive or negative... fantastic! I am glad this project has grabbed your attention - that was the idea behind the imagery and the creation of this web-clip.
This is all meaningless considering it is posted to YT and not being shown in HD. Post this on Vimeo, Nikon. Otherwise I can just imagine that the images are amazing.
Loved it. Great Footage mate. We can only dream of doing a job like this. Definately very jealous mate, and the guy flying the hang glider - job well done too mate. These morning glory clouds, never seen/noticed them or heard about them before. Cool stuff.
What great footage? Most of this was him talking about his camera with some short footage of the glider in between. As far as camera info it's probably good. As far as hang glider footage, I've seen a lot better.
they only say true HD meaning the highest on the American market. 720 is still HD just not as high as 1080 Bosingr. Just so you know if you computer monitor is not an 1080p monitor or HD the only difference in 720 and 1080 that you'll see is the size of the trailer your watching.
The camera doesn't mean anything. What a fool, You could give Joe McNally a D3000 and he would still deliver the stunning shots he gets on his D3. Gear only means so much, it's really based on the talent of the person behind the camera.
Well think about a regular photographer, not an established pro. From my experience my 'learning' was stunted with my D40. I moved to the D300 and I've learnt and experienced so much I wouldn't mind taking a step back to a D90 or D5000 (though i have AF-D glass). Once to you get to some level of experience picking up any camera shouldn't be a problem, especially with decent glass.
Yes, this is true - to an extent. Joe McNally would still deliver with a D3000, but at some point, you do become limited by the capabilities of the equipment. I own a D80 and have played with a D3, and there's a HUGE difference. This is especially true of the new D3s - try getting a shot of a fast-moving dirt biker at 5:53 in the evening with ambient light and no blur. ISO 12,800, 1/800, f/5 @ 200mm. Only - ONLY - the D3s can do that. It's the first of its kind.
Whether 720P is True HD or no, it's still close enough to be called HD. And the 720P videos you see on the QT movie trailer page & here look so much better than the Nikon "720P" videos that look more like Standard Defintion @ best!
Were these vids hily cmprsed to ply on YT bc when I thk of evn 720P, thse vids from D3s & D300s or D90s look more like LD.
I really like the content of these vids! M Watson & B Frakes got some great footage! It's just 2 bad the video quality looks like crap.
1280 x 720 @ 24fps = 720p high definition. Standard Definition is 720 x 480. The D300s isn't capable of 1080p resolution, but 720p is most certainly a "true" high definition format...so don't be an idiot. There's more to video production than resolution, and this guy succeeded completely in creating some fabulous footage.

Is this done using a custom rig? Or something available to everyone? Also, how are you starting/stopping the videos remotely?
