@alfaceandrice, that's what hosting an Olympics can do to a country. The Greeks understood the debt they'd be left with after the games were over. It doesn't take away anything from the splendor of the games of course, but the long term financial damage could take seemingly forever to repay.

Greece's debt is at about 300 billion euros. More than 100% of GDP. They had an impact, but they were not the main cause of it.
It was just a combination of corruption, irresponsability and wrong management of the economy in the middle of the worst global crisis since 1929. So...
I never said it caused the current financial crisis. I said it caused debt in Greece's budget, and it did. The subsequent global financial crisis that has hit pretty much every corner of the globe has only made matters worse.

Que el barril de petróleo tenga un precio tan alto no influye en la calidad de los juegos, si no la organización... Los estadios de la Copa América 2007 aún no están listos, Caracas es un caos en cuanto a tráfico se refiere y es una de las ciudades más contaminadas del planeta, además de que la criminalidad reina en todo el país... Los juegos Interamericanos de Atletismo de los Llanos o como sea que se llamen también se vieron afectados por la misma razón, "falta de tiempo". Y eso de que los problemas se "resuelven" con dinero mejor te lo guardas porque las cosas se reseulven poniéndole ganas, interés y empeño.

It is so nice not to hear any stupid audio from NBC, who did the Athens 2004 Olympics and their culturally ignorant coverage of both the opening and closing ceremonies a total dis-service. Thank you for posting.
Agreed. I'm an American, and I absolutely hate NBC's coverage of the Olympics. I mean, it's the opening ceremony. All you have to do is maybe repeat the name of the country, if that.Instead, they talk through the whole thing, and fail miserably at telling us any culturally significant piece of information.
