@MatthewPalumbo For now in the US spreading the word on Go is about piqueing interest one person at a time. For one, hardly anyone in America knew about Toyota until the Oil Crisis of '73. Soon something should happen to make the public's interest in Go take off.
I wonder, how would it be if we had a Cold War with China or NK...
So far, it's just Michael Redmond in the game. But once the brothas finish with basketball, football, tennis, golf, scrabble, and Uno, they're gonna get into Go and the world better watch out!
@rm06c Would an inner city Black (or other non-Asian) kid want to become a Go player in the first place? ("Nerd games" are hard to sell in America nowadays :( )
Ever since the NBA, NFL, and MLB started offering multi-million dollar annual purses to their star players, just about every boy and his brother dreams of becoming one of them. Not all of them make it, of course, but the fame & fortune that comes with being a star player is a powerful draw.
At this rate, America will never see a game of Go on television. All we seem to care about are reality shows. One after the other. It's very sad. I want to move to Japan, or somewhere else where culture is still practiced and respected.
I like that previous posters idea of random Go problems in the newspaper, at least a little square :).
@Kenwolf21 Go can be publicized in the US, but it will take a few decades at least. Now, if we were in a Cold War with China or NK...
If you really want to make Go go mainstream in the US, one way to begin is by offering fabulous purses to promising Go talent. Would you give a potential 5p hopeful $15 million a year? Or at least $5 million?
@Sieg15 Learning the right playing habits from the first game is essential to improving at Go. Of course you still gotta put in the hours (i.e., playing plenty of games and chewing on plenty of tsumego ^^), but learning the right way to play now will make things much easier later on. I picked up the game in June 2006, but only now am I beginning to develop an understanding of the right way to play Go.
Kids learning Go practice like crazy to get good. Adults players should too.
They should like... have a channel for Go or something. It really is an amazing game, and it's a shame that the majority of American's dont even know what it's about. They should do weekly problems in the news papers (you know, little Tesuji or Tsumego problems) like they have for Sudoku. That way, the game can gain some popularity, and we can have more access to Go events in the states.
A man from the west commentating in japanese about go. now that is a rare site indeed! Is Redmond a pro? (I suppose he is, if he is really 9d, but i'm not sure.)
He's actually challenged for a title or two int he past, I believe - so he's quite good. Go really needs to get some more air time in the U.S, so we can have more international competition.
He's been living in Japan as since he was 11, and he's been playing go professionally since then and has of course become a Japanese citizen. At this point he's more Japanese than American, so you can basically say he IS a native.
Chess is better than go. Go is an attention whore always bashing on chess. Fuck you!

Considering he's affiliated with the Japanese Go Association, and lives there, I would assume he would have to know Japanese.
Anywho, I kind of wish I could be good like that. I only started so I've got a long way to go.

The majority of Americans don't even know about Go's existence, let alone what it's about.
But yes, I agree that Go should be more publicified in the States.

俺、日本人ではないんですがマイケル氏がアメリカ生まれ、アメリカ育ちですのでやはりちょっとしたアクセントがあるように聞こえます。当然なことだと思いますよ。それにしても彼の日本語は抜群に上手い。

He's been living in Japan as since he was 11, and he's been playing go professionally since then and has of course become a Japanese citizen. At this point he's more Japanese than American, so you can basically say he IS a native.
Nycodeamus 4 years ago
No you can't, since 'native' means "born [there]". He wasn't born there, so he isn't native Japanese. :)
