Although I'm not a huge fan of decals (I believe consoles look best as they were out of the factory), I'd definately recommend them to those who like decals.
You know that with decalgirl decals and other high quality decals, you can reapply the skins soon after putting them on, so you could of sorted out the decal on the front of the Wii, you didn't have to leave it like that. If you took it off, the decal should come off undamaged, ready to reapply.
I have bought a skin + faceplate, well first my white faceplate broke (power button got off), so i bought a blue plate but that one didn't looked nice cuz my sides of the 360 where white... so i bought the skin and the faceplate of assasins creed and it rock's!! It's so cool =), i personally would't buy a skin for the wii cuz i would screw up.... the wii has so many little parts to put stickers on so i just leave it white =D
