it sounds like IPTV is competing with Media Center Pc's with recording television.

Well since they are both microsoft products they are not really competing. I think MS will be phasing out Media Center in favor of this.

You think that being able to record HD content like tv shows to the xbox hard drive could canabalize sales of downloading HDTV with the marketplace. I mean why would i need to download "CSI" if i could just record in the background on a timer in HD?

The point is for those who don't have a DVR or TV tuner card. The idea is that, Hey, look, we know it sucks that you don't have a DVR, so we'll make up for investing in your console of choice and add video downloads so you can get your weekly fix.
