I think they are both great games, but they were made to avoid competing eachother (and CoD). In my opinon, look at the success of halo, and compare it to half-life. There is a clear winner.
And then the interplay between those recipe-stylee combinations and how they created now creative possibilities with the more physically reactive environment.
Before HALO, there was no sticking grunt, who runs behind turret, that blows over ledge, and lands on Elite.
No 3 freaks piled into jeep, doing wild ice-drift, before plasma bomb sends them into psycho flip over the wraith that fired it, skimming it's edge, and landing on the enemy taking refuge from the turret fire behind it.
The only thing HALO has in common with Half-Life is that it's an FPS.
HALO and HALF-LIFE are the two immortals. Two of the most immortals. HALO is the paradigm that redefined modern FPS mechanics. I've written about it that much, that I'm not going to go to great lengths here. The interaction of the games physical dynamics, with it's new vocabulary of attacks divided onto three buttons (Shoot, nade, melee), it's restriction to two weapons, and the way those weapons effectively combined.
Draxfear really put a lot of effort into this vid, and what does he get in the comments, A load of bullshit fanboys debating which game is better. This is a collab of the games, not a competition, so grow up. BOTH games are awesome in different ways, and this movie is friggin epic.
Halo is sooooo gay Half life 1 is better than Halo 3 and it was made in 1999..... Half Life 2 isnt bad but its still way better than fucking Halo 3......
The playable mechanics of HALO 1, are more advanced than HALF-LIFE 2. But the delivery of the campaign in HL2 is stunning. It's amazing to this day, that HL fanatics, still don't grasp, that the beauty of HALO was in it's unscripted tech, whereas the art of HL is all about CHOREOGRAPHY. The way crazy crap would compound itself in HALO 1 was revolutionary, and non-existent in the mechanically dated HALF-LIFE.
@Hzqi dude... are you saying halo is better or something do too playable mechanics? and halo 1 is'nt advanced than half life 2, unless ur meaning the original half life game, or do to it's futuristic world, and going to different interesting places than yes.... i do agree with you on those terms... but one last thing im gonna say, half life was made in 98, and got more than 10 gaming awards, it also got game of the year award aswell, so if ur saying halo trilogy is better.... look at the facts
Facts? Since you mention facts, let's look at those. Half-Life 2: Traditional staggered, hierarchial weapon implementation without a pooled balancing process. Listed on an old-school, decision free, all-out collective. HALO: Not only are the weapons balanced as a non-hierarchial pool, they are cross-implemented. Success basically depends on it. For example, the cross- implementation of plasma-pistol with a headshot weapon. Or frags and assault fire.
@Hzqi does it really matter? i dont see that game get over 20 awards just like hl2, ps if you're having trouble switching to a weapon on hl2 go to options, keyboard, advance, there will be 2 items there 1. enable quick swap or whatever and 2 enable the console... oh and another thing..... can you spawn npc's and make them do as you command on halo 2 or 3? no its real ppl yes help with machinima's but sometimes accidents may happen, hl2 you dont need ppl except for effects and voices
Actually, you did see that game get over 20 awards, just like HL2. NPC are deliberately avoided in HALO, and are completely beside the point. Having trouble switching weapons? No. The game's primary mechanics are weapon switching. In the broader feature set, HALF-LIFE is more compelling. In the nuts and bolts aspect of action mechanics and causality, HALO is deeper. EoS. Yes, I've heard of Team Fortress, what about it?
Also, of equal or greater consideration is the fluent seperation of multiple actions onto multiple buttons, in measured application. Shoot, grenade, melee. In Half-Life 2 I still have to change weapons to either grenade OR melee. How do you say, get with the times? Look, Half-Life 2 has probably the most sophisticated campaign delivery and externalized feature set of any FPS ever. For the internalized, and interactive mechanics, though, HALO is far, far deeper. Including HALO: CE.

yeah, it came out a year and a half later. They had halo 3 as an example for a better game.
What happened to killzone 1, that was supposed to be the Halo killer.
