As it turns out market forces are doing more to retire low mileage vehicles that the cash for clunkers program. The rising cost of fuel has all but destroyed the large vehicle market and this in turn has had an effect of state revenue from highway fuel taxes. I would have preferred to see a $1000 subsidy on vehicles that achieve over 40 mpg and just let the clunkers die a natural death. The terms of the program were to lax and didn't really lower gas consumption all that much.
Cash for clunkers happened for 2 reasons. 1 All newer cars have GPS. This allows them to track your vehicle without bugging it or wasting the time waiting for a warrant. 2 The Chinese wouldn't accept any more bonds as collateral for the last loan they gave us, so we gave them the metal from those cars.

One of the reasons the C4C program looked so inviting is fuel economy has gotten so bad since after 2001. High end gearing was used as a substitute for engine performance. High end gearing increases RPMS. And increase in RPMS means an DECREASE in MPGS.

I am a Canadian. and i am outraged about this program. The one major problem is they have all these people buying new cars and trading in the cars they have paid for in full... So your government is creating payments for people in a Economic downfall?..... I see alot of these cars getting repoed due to the fact of people not being able to make the payments.
I went to the local pick-a-part yard today to get some odds and ends, *some* of the cars DO end up in the junk yards to be picked off. I stress *SOME* not all. The bodies weren't even spray painted with words either, just chalk on the windshields.

They cannot buy and immediately trade in a vehicle. The vehicle must be registered and insured for at least one year and this must be documented. There is no fraud on the part of the dealers, almost no dealers have even collected the funds from the govt., and there is very little protection for the dealer. i work at a dealership and to be honest this 'cash for clunkers' disgusts me. we have over 70 clunkers on the lot now and maybe 10 of them are shit cars, the other 60, perfectly good cars, great shape, between 70-100k miles on them. i know many of my friends who are in college and need cars and they cant buy these clunkers b/c its government property! we destroy these cars, ruin the engines and then they get crushed. its horribe, damn right disturbing, PERFECTLY GOOD CARS THAT PPL NEED, DSTROYD!

This guy is a MORON. I got rid of my 20 year old Toyota truck with over 300,000 miles on it. Got a new Toyota Tacoma. My clunker got maybe 10 miles to the gallon - my new truck gets 18 average. BTW paid cash for both. Do the math - 20 years without a car payment - plan on doing the same with new truck. Perform your regular maintenance and a good car will run for years. My advice - buy the car you can afford, don't lease (rent) a car and don't get trapped into the image car.

For a car to qualify for the clunker program it has to have been owned by the person making the trade in for the last year and has to have been insured by the buyer for the entire last year. Dealers are being watched closely paperwork is being checked fraudsters will be punished.

So are the States. Here in NY they are pulling over cars left and right and giving out tickets like crazy, even using un-marked cars. They give out parking tickets like mad, . . you can't even be 2 minutes over and you'll get a fucking ticket. I was a day late on my inspection and got a ticket, and my car was parked on a side street too. My honda has 125K and the body is in excellent condition so I'm keeping it.

How anyone with a moral compass (and a working brain) would want to turn in a paid off, or nearly paid off, working vehicle in good condition to a dealer in order to lap out $4500 from their progeny's pockets to put towards a down payment and the added debt burden of a new vehicle is beyond me. And especially during a deepening depression.

is just too overpowering for some and all rational goes out the window. There are indeed very few who would actually under normal circumstances replace their car during a recession, but the american consumer once more went to bat.
BTW, the entire vehicle is not destroyed, per se, except for the engine and supporting components. The bodies can be salvaged...

junkyards in my area are rejecting them. Why? Because the parts in question do not include any engine parts, only body parts; the engines have to be completely destroyed! The salvage yards make most of their profit from engine-related parts as anyone with even a peanut brain would understand.
There's an eco-Leninist angle to this cars for "clunkers" program, which would explain why they can't resell the vehicles. Remember, nowadays government at all levels is infested with watermelon collectivists (green outside, red inside).
The government wants to up the percentage of ethanol in the fuel at the pumps and increase the numbers of "greener" vehicles on the highway. Thus, they take these vehicles off the highway through a deceptive cash for so-called "clunkers."

One of the reasons the C4C program looked so inviting is fuel economy has gotten so bad since after 2001. High end gearing was used as a substitute for engine performance. High end gearing increases RPMS. And increase in RPMS means an DECREASE in MPGS.

I'm still waiting for someone to give me a good answer how it helps an economy for the government to pay people NOT to work for the last $4500 toward their new ride. Economies are built from people serving their fellow man. C4C pays them to NOT serve while punishing tax payers, who DID serve and now get nothing for it. If you can afford a car bill, you can afford to wait/save for your new car without stealing money from taxpayers. You would be helping the economy by working for that money.

C4C Dumb Economics: Any so-called stimulus program is a ruse. Government increases its spending only by reducing private spending equivalently. Whether government finances its added spending by hiking taxes, borrowing, or by inflating the currency, the added spending will be offset by reduced private spending. Plus, private spending's much more efficient than government spending replacing it because people act more carefully spending their own money than spending other people's money.

C4C: Smart Politics. If Congress taxes you $500 to create auto jobs, the victims are invisible and are only revealed by asking what you would have done with the $500 if left in your hands. I went to the local pick-a-part yard today to get some odds and ends, *some* of the cars DO end up in the junk yards to be picked off. I stress *SOME* not all. The bodies weren't even spray painted with words either, just chalk on the windshields.
Of course the engine is worthless, but if any in need of car body parts, head on out to your local pick-a-part junk yards NOW.

no one is blowing up perfectly good engines.. all they do is dismantle the cars and scrap all the parts according to the metals..the junk yards have been doing the exact same thing ..there are millions of perfectly good engines in all the junkyardslots of cars have bad transmission or no a/c so the car is scraped instead of repaired because of the expense. They cannot buy and immediately trade in a vehicle. The vehicle must be registered and insured for at least one year and this must be documented. There is no fraud on the part of the dealers, almost no dealers have even collected the funds from the govt., and there is very little protection for the dealer. So please, stop the personal vendetta you have against dealers, who are just trying to earn a living like you, and focus on our collapsing country.

i work at a dealership and to be honest this 'cash for clunkers' disgusts me. we have over 70 clunkers on the lot now and maybe 10 of them are shit cars, the other 60, perfectly good cars, great shape, between 70-100k miles on them. i know many of my friends who are in college and need cars and they cant buy these clunkers b/c its government property! we destroy these cars, ruin the engines and then they get crushed. its horribe, damn right disturbing, PERFECTLY GOOD CARS THAT PPL NEED, DSTROYD!

I highly doubt they get paid 150k a year. And destroying the cars gets NOT great cars out. These are vehicles that get poor gas mileage. And not the whole car gets destroyed. They get a certain amount of time to part out before it is destroyed.

Think about how your health care will look in the near future if single-payer (riding in on a Trojan Horse of co-ops) will look. This guy is a MORON. I got rid of my 20 year old Toyota truck with over 300,000 miles on it. Got a new Toyota Tacoma. My clunker got maybe 10 miles to the gallon - my new truck gets 18 average. BTW paid cash for both. Do the math - 20 years without a car payment - plan on doing the same with new truck. Perform your regular maintenance and a good car will run for years. My advice - buy the car you can afford, don't lease (rent) a car and don't get trapped into the image car.

Sorry that fraud he speaks of would not hold up the vehicle statedly to be eligible would have to been registered and insured for one complete year prior to the begining date of this cash for clunkers program. I am an ASE certified technician our dealership hates this program. I agree a lot of good vehicles are going to waste but I can not get past the fact that there are some serious pieces of junk that are being taken out of commision and more economical vehicles circulated in.

Do you have to have proof that your car was insured for 12 months? The government is not going to fix the economy by doing this. They are creating more of a financial bubble. I have some Ocean front Property in Arizona you can buy too if you want.

You are full of it! One of the rules of the CFC program is that your car has to be licensed and insured for 12 months. There is no possible way dealers can be scamming the system like you say.

Get your facts straight. You Have to have the car registered in your name for more then a year, and also have insurance on the vehicle the whole time. I think you are voicing your own opinion on the subject when you know nothing about it. I am a dealer and I have to deal with the nightmare of this stupid program. Dealerships dont sell cars to their salesman to buy back you idiot! once the car is sold, its not new anymore. you loose 15-20% of the equity as soon as you buy it. Thats not worth it!

For a car to qualify for the clunker program it has to have been owned by the person making the trade in for the last year and has to have been insured by the buyer for the entire last year. Dealers are being watched closely paperwork is being checked fraudsters will be punished.

All I can say is that Life & reality is NOT always about the math. Let's say the US goes into complete collapse. Say you already have 175K on your Honda. How long can you keep a Honda running, not even a Honda will run forever.
If you got a cash for clunkers now, you got Hundreds of thousands of miles ahead of you. You could blow your engine next year. Maybe the bank quit makeing car loans except to the wealthiest people. Then what you do? hold a sign on a corner, "Will work for auto parts" !

2 US automakers filed bankruptcy, The Gov. Tax Revenues are dropping like rock. As I said in my previous comment. Most American have already bought the last car they will ever buy. So I hope you like driving your 10 year old Honda for the next 10 years. That is probaly what is in the future for all of us. The world as you know it is over

So are the States. Here in NY they are pulling over cars left and right and giving out tickets like crazy, even using un-marked cars. They give out parking tickets like mad, . . you can't even be 2 minutes over and you'll get a fucking ticket. I was a day late on my inspection and got a ticket, and my car was parked on a side street too. My honda has 125K and the body is in excellent condition so I'm keeping it.

How anyone with a moral compass (and a working brain) would want to turn in a paid off, or nearly paid off, working vehicle in good condition to a dealer in order to lap out $4500 from their progeny's pockets to put towards a down payment and the added debt burden of a new vehicle is beyond me. And especially during a deepening depression.

BTW, the entire vehicle is not destroyed, per se, except for the engine and supporting components. The bodies can be salvaged...
but...
junkyards in my area are rejecting them. Why? Because the parts in question do not include any engine parts, only body parts; the engines have to be completely destroyed! The salvage yards make most of their profit from engine-related parts as anyone with even a peanut brain would understand.

There's an eco-Leninist angle to this cars for "clunkers" program, which would explain why they can't resell the vehicles. Remember, nowadays government at all levels is infested with watermelon collectivists (green outside, red inside).
The government wants to up the percentage of ethanol in the fuel at the pumps and increase the numbers of "greener" vehicles on the highway. Thus, they take these vehicles off the highway through a deceptive cash for so-called "clunkers."
