@mjern858 yes, but you should put something at the end to stop the thread from slipping off. For instance you can use beads, wire, glued thread etc at the ends to make sure your umbrella stays in place,
@25seze There is a trick for making these with toothpicks, use beads at the end of the toothpicks. I am using matches, but I paint the ends so they can no longer strike.

I like this. I have some toothpicks with only one side sharp so I'l use them instead of matches. More safe. Thanks for idea ;-)
