I'm in south Florida and it's everywhere down here. I absolutely LOVE cane and just had some earlier this evening.
When I was a kid and didn't have money for candy we'd snag a stalk or two of it from the field nearby and cut it up and boy was it goooood :)
Some folks don't care for it but most do. If you've never tried it it's a real treat though. Just have to be careful preparing it because you can cut yourself easily, as the stalk is very hard and requires a bit of skill to properly prepare.
wow thanks for this. I found a local grower through craigslist, I remember chewing on sugar cane when I went to Hawaii, I can't wait to grow some of my own. Now if only I could find an industrial juicer like that!
I think this guy is super excited or ate too much sugar cane! jk Im gonna do this, norcal has the best of all the seasons and I love the plant tolerance zone in sacramento
@Briansgarage Beet sugar is chemically processed, and the cost is prohibitive for a small grower. You can just boil the beets down and make syrup, but it basically tastes like beets (okay for some, but not me).
I saw sugarcane harvest in southern Asia. It was a small scale farm so they brought that machine out near the sugarcane field and juiced it right there. They then evaporated the juice in a huge pan over an open fire. The end result was a red-orange color molasses, that is usually allowed to harden and sold in the form of different sized pucks. Unrefined sugar has a very nice flavor. Something very similar can be made with the evaporated sap of palm trees, which has a slightly stronger flavor.
sugarcane is probably my favorite food. i dont own a cane machine. if you are growing for personal use you really dont need one. cane juice is very strong and a little goes a long way. all i use is a buck knife to split one stalk into quarter sections, and from there its a piece of cake to just snap off sections and eat. the outer layer just peels away. you can also cut it into little squares and put those in a garlic press for teaspoon size servings to sweeten drinks or add to recipes.
How about using a machete first then using a juicer? I buying an Oscar VitalMax 900 Juicer but not sure if it could cold press sugar cane, even if it was chopped???
Could I? Or should I stick with Stevia...anyone???
@highskilledsibby you are thinking of refined sugars and soda. stop listening to dentists, pimps of industrial waste products of the aluminum smelting industry as part of their dental 'care' regime. sugarcane was chewed by many native cultures TO KEEP THEIR TEETH HEALTHY. its natures toothbrush.
@mothmanifest I bet sugarcane is better than refined sugar because of the minerals and vitamins but is there scientific prove for your statement sugarcane being nature's toothbrush?
@highskilledsibby hmm im really not sure. scientists dont generally PROVE anything. of course with generous corporate backing they tend to think they can. i know it because my ancestors knew it and taught it to my grandparents who taught it to me. dentists were unheard of until we replaced our natural diet for an unnatural one. take note.. its usually abuse of the whole body that will manifest in places like our teeth. meth-mouth is a good example.
@mothmanifest Scientist certainly have the methods to at least disprove hypothesis if they are paid to do it. They need something for their living and equipment, right? Maybe we should start a cititzen initiative. Everyone who's intrested gives an amount of money to pay scientist's research about stuff that matters to the people not to the corporations. :-)

It is possible to get a clipping and plant it? I live about an hour away and would love to grow some!

dont you have to burn sugercane before harvest? Is that something nessisary on a chemical level or is it just a way industrial growers harvest it?
outofworkbum 1 year ago
Probably not going to find a industrial cane juicer at Discount Juicers? Would not be practical for 95 % viewing this.
You forgot the part of the video where you show us how you juice sugar cane.

There was no "mature" sugar cane to juice in this episode :(
