An underrated song for an underrated character. Gameplay-wise, he was definitely time-consuming to raise, but he had potential to be a nearly invincible killing machine if you taught him the right rages. The snow scarf is also boss.
In the GBA version, Gau level 17 can solo the Soul Shrine without changing equipment. this involves every boss fight in the game back to back and several very powerful random encounters and bonus bosses, I think they are in groups of 20 back to back. So you fight like all of the dragons and the statues and Kaiser Dragon non-stop.
He's actually so good that it takes the skill out of the game.
Mog's best setup, with Merit Award, is actually even stronger though.
It gets Gau just right. The beginning is horribly sad sounding, just like the horrible beginning of Gau's life. But as it goes on it brightens up and by the end has a feeling of hope and innocence to it, which perfectly suits Gau as he emerges from the wild and makes friends with the other party members.
i think gau's story is sad the melody not so much is thene sounds mor depprsing then sad... but hes my second fav in 6 and awsom his rag command is epic
Gameplay-wise, I did not like this character... But his story was touching. I think a lot of us can relate to not having a father around, and then being disappointed when you finally meet him... At least, I can.
Draped in monster hides, eyes shining with intelligence, a youth surviving against all odds. [Hmmm... sounds a bit like me] Later in the game "DON'T EAT WITH YOUR FINGERS!!" "Clothes binding! Take off!!" [OMG! That IS me!!] :-o i HAD to name him after me! :-D
@Detsurasu I actually never found it to be overly sad, just more endearing. I always thought Gau was one of the cuter characters in 6, so that's kind of the feeling this theme gives me. Kind of one of boyhood innocence. Celes' theme, on the other hand, has gotten me choked up more than once.
Draped in monster hides.eyes shining with intelligence... how could a man snap when a child is born Ive never been down that road but i think i could be strong enough to handle that.
despite it's kinda sad tone, one might think it might not really fit gau all to well.. but i think it does.. it si sad yet happy at the same time and it perfectly explains gaus life, wiht all his ups and downs... gau had a very harsh life, but he lived through it with a smile.. oh and.. UWAO o.o
I wanted Sabin to punch the shit out of Gau's father so bad. But, Gau not wanting that, shows he was more than a beast.

@DanielL5583 Takes me straight to the Let's Play archive for FF6. Naming Cyan "MrThou" in the game is genius.

By far Gau has the saddest story and music theme in FFVI.

@zsybrant Hmm, I don't know, I find Gau's story as sad as it could be. Never found that Celec' was so sad, the melody maybe...
But imaging, that Gau's dad got rid of his little baby, thinking that he was a monster is unforgivable!
Relm was the cutest for me, that 10 years old child can be so funny and cute at the same time!
Detsurasu 11 months ago
@Detsurasu Eh. Maybe. I never really used Relm or Strago too much. But I can see where you're coming from with Gau's story.
