@conghoan1998 You're mistaken. This is from the Rossini/Donizetti disc she put out in 1964. And there are no C sharps attempted here. Are you thinking of the 56 concert recording?
@TitoSchipa65 While you may be right about this later version, have a listen to the 1956 version. Callas's coloratura, downward chromatic scales, and especially the portamenti are the very embodiment of the Italian school of singing; certainly something Dame Joan could never claim, as much as I love her.
Listening to Sutherland's and Callas' versions of this aria from the same year, and how different and wonderful they both are! .... Though I prefer Joan's by a long shot. :P
Not sure how I feel about all those tempo fluctuations, but it is nice to hear her singing this well so late in her career. If only she had taken better care of her voice!
These recordings easily account for some of the worst ever committed to disc by a professional singer. One can understand the geriatric tempo once she begins to sing, at age 39 sounding like she's 69.
@iriisblue I think the 'geriatric' tempo is misleading -- the sustained notes demonstrate that semiramide is an imperious queen, and the coloratura is still extremely nimble in the middle and low registers.
This is from the period where she lost a lot of weight to snag Ari Onassis- her voice is veiled here more than usual. I saw her live in 1959 in San Francisco in a Schiaparelli pink gown and i don't recall the heavy veil- it was in the Civic Center- a large venue and the Queen of Greece was there as the mayor at the time was a Greek- George Christopher. I saw her arrive at the after-performance party at Whitney Warren's house, as I was staying at my aunt's next door.
@krakowjak , Sorry, but I can't know 'cause I have only one copy of the disk in mp3 and there's no date. I just know that the name of the cd is Spotlight on Maria Callas. And I tried to find some data, information about this cd on the net, but got nothing. Please, try it you yourself! Thank u for listening to it! :) P.S.: the photos in the video are not from the concert she is singing bel raggio.

La Callas poteva cantare tutto e in Tutto era Divina!!!Non c'è niente da fare...semplicemente una cometa che passa una volta e chissà quando tornerà...
@thomastmwc You really have confused me when you Maria Callas had not much agility. In fact I will never undertand that. There are a lot of things once can say for or against La Callas, but lack of agility is definitely not one of them.
Majestic!

Even though she had vocal problems, I think she still had all the charm and magic as she did in her younger years.

@gustopheles Wrong. In 1963-1964, Maria Callas can't sing C#6.

@gustopheles In Norma 1965 in Paris, she sang B5 very bad. I think she recorded this aria in 1956-1958 but I don't know what concert ?

@TitoSchipa65 Of course. Maria Callas's voice is slower and darker.

il rallentamento nelle parti di coloratura dice tutto sull fatto che è una voce troppo drammatica e pesante per rossini e le colorature in genere

la Callas non va bene come soprano di coloratura ma come soprano drammatico e mezzo va meglio
luigipavabartolotti 2 years ago
@luigipavabartolotti I used to know a couple of teachers who hated the voice and stated that this is a coloratura....
Once, someone no lesser than Grace (yes Bumbry) told me the same.
"This is a Dramatic Coloratura!" she said imperially!
I am not name-dropping, I am just telling you...
God knows how many people have a different opinion out there... Listening to them would be fatal...

agility does matter here, in bel raggio ~. Ofcz it doesnt matter in Vissi d'arte, duh. FYI, I think Callas' Vissi d'Arte is the best.
