This show was amazing! I was fortunate enough to see it during its run on Broadway and I was blown away. It's the first (and probably only) show I've ever really "connected" with. Rebecca Naomi Jones was INCREDIBLE in this show.
I'm not going to lie, I was one of those people who judged this musical on just clips and I was not sure how much I'd like it, but I saw a region production recently at Studio Theatre in DC and absolutely LOVED IT. Loved it loved it loved it. So really, dont be like me, try to go see the whole thing in person!
i know everyone loves whoopi but she bothers me so much. even though she says she loves this play she's not particularly...i don't know...respectful?
she seems to treat every play on the view, esp. this one, like a " fun little play". to me passing strange is a cathartic piece of art, not a show thats "so much fun" with lots of different ACCENTS.
l never even heard of Stew or this play until doing a Spike Lee search on Netflix, but Stew (& this play/Spike Lee documentary) is ALL THE MORE REASON (along with getting hitched) l headed 2 Europe!! And l plan 2 return engaged & with a book, music, & performing deal in the works!!
I hate that people judged this show based on little clips they saw, and people seemed to hate the accents. No one would focus on the music. Spike lee agrees with us.
I really really wish they'd done this medley for the Tonys. I think including that little bit of Amsterdam in that performance would have made it a lot more enjoyable for a lot of people who didn't 'get' Keys/It's Alright by itself.
That being said, I love the crap out out of this show. It's really such an insightful and inspirational piece of art and I am so heartbroken that it closed before I got a chance to see it.
daniel breaker is awesome, he should've won a tony. also, colman domingo is fantastic. he should have been nominated for best actor, as stephen holden pointed out in the ny times.
im completely not a racist but...did they really think it was a necessity to have only the black view members on stage with them? and even though this story is about a "black man"'s journey, theatre and literature should be able to be interpreted to any person no matter what skin color, race, or religion...
this show is like the Spring Awakening of this season in a way with the hole ppl not expecting what they end up seeing but this show is so amazing i just love everything about it cant wait to see it agian
and i'd just like to add...black people have always had the ability to rock out. our roots our in rock..with the blues and such. HELLZ YEAH! I want to be in this, someday.
Though I hope Xanadu wins best musical as well Im still very mixed on if I like Passing Strange or not some stuff I heard I didnt like at all and then some of it I did. I personally think that the best chance at a tony for this show is Daniel Breaker taking the tony from Boyd Gaines. I think Boyd will win but he already has 3 giving Breaker that new comer edge and he could win.

Stew's vocals remind me of a combination of Adam Duritz and Craig Finn. Awesome.

this song was so much more powerful when its live! they need to show the whole cast more, not just who's singing
