  • Wow ... must have been a lot of work to put st like this together....appreciate

  • One of my favourites videos ever. Thank you so much!

  • Oliver and Richard Cromwell were Lords Protector not kings. Do they count as monarchs?

  • 3:47 THE BEST of THE BEST QUEEN!!!!!

  • well put great!

  • What an amazing compilation! I get goosebumps watching this...what a fantastic video. Good job!

  • It is all of this that is the reason for why I am majoring in History at the moment. I think I'm a little bit obsessed with British history....oh well.

  • Ah, the British king and queens. A story of power, sex, money, murder, poison in the squalid corridors of the Medieval England.

    It makes smashing films.

  • I keep coming back to watch this over and overagain...it's perfect... the music adds so much feeling to it.. I love how it's inlaid with the portraits..I love how it's compiled in general..It's as if done by a professional. You should do this type of thing as a job! Take care <3

  • VERY well done!

  • Nice!

  • Owesome! Well Done!!!!

  • Man that is an excellent compilation....even recognised some of the footage used.

  • I must say great video, masterpiece. Please could you say the name of the music ? becuse it's amazing, and I checked the description for it, and it's not there.

  • @jgb122333 The beginning and end music is taken from the TV show "David Starkey's Monarchy" and the music through the bulk of the vid is Kingmaker by X-Ray Dog.

  • @Fonjil Thank You very much, and amazing video.

  • This is so creative and inspiring. With your great editing, I got to enjoy the quick overview of British history and the wonderful recollection of some of the good films in LESS THAN 10 minutes! Thank you.

  • this was great this should b made in 2 1 movie

  • Great Job This was Awsome !

  • lol I'm on my mom's account watching this video because it's so awesome and I look down and see three comments I wrote (Nicollie1062)...geeez I sound like a such a geek the way I write and say things..haha never noticed it till now.

  • Oliver Cromwell is the best

  • great =] well produced

  • no laurence Oliver Henry V or Richard III

  • what was the name of the movie where it showd king stephen and mitilda?

  • well done =)

  • 4:37 James Villiers as Charles II YUM!

  • What's the name of the song? I like it! :)

  • This is one of the best videos made on youtube. Well done.

  • 500 chars. is not enough to tell you how awesome I think this video is. I can't believe you managed to film-clips of EVERY SINGLE monarch and piece them all together so nicely! I was amazed there were even filims made about half these people. Some big names, sure. Charles II, Henry VIII, the Six Georges, Victoria, the Edwards...but others...I'm amazed. Well done!!

  • @Shangas My thoughts exactly!! I'm always a bit annoyed that everyone always focuses more on the tudor part of the monarchy.. didn't know alot of these films existed!! And I agree.. this was an Excellent video! Cheers :)

  • EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!

  • i am not of native british blood, but i am damn proud to be born and raised in this country which has such amaizing history. Only Britain, Egypt and Rome have histories this impressive and colourful.

  • @NumberDne I am of native Brtish blood, mostly Scots/Irish and have nothing but contempt for the British monarchy. They are a bunch of thieves and murderers. The Irish refer to the Union Jack as "The Butcher's Apron" for obvious reasons. The first slaves in America were people kidnapped from the streets of Britain and shipped out in chains. The crimes of the British monarchy and those who support them are too numerous to be listed here. Fortunately their end is near.

  • @terrorstorm99 So in what way is their end near. Are you gonna storm every single royal residence in europe to kill off all of the royal bloodlines which are in line for the British throne? The union jack is one of the, if not the most widely recognised and used flag on earth. If it was so bad then all these nations and people wouldn't identify with it. I'v fuckin had enough of appologising and feeling guilty for the empire. i was born in Britain after all of that. i need not hate Britain

  • @NumberDne I think Russia and France are on the same level.

  • Really done well !!!!

  • i think it has a point. Kingdom without violence is a contradiction in terms. Elisabeth the II not, but they are not endowed with real power

  • long live the queen

  • WOW! THIS IS BRILLIANT! LOVE THE MUSIC!

  • violence, greed, lust, and insatiable appetite sum up the monarchy!

  • The monarch between Edward the Confessor and William the Conqueror was Harold II, not Harold I.

  • This really is a remarkable video. Seriously, someone really did their English and film history homework. Despite the conspicuous absence of Sir Charles Laughton as Henry VIII and Bette Davis as Elizabeth I, this is one of the best things I've ever seen on YouTube.

  • Cromwell was never a king of England, he was the Lord Protector for a few short years after Charles I execution. After Cromwell died, they brought back the Stuarts in the shape of Charles II.

  • @tonylast47 While Cromwell was not a king of England, most lists will look to include him as it explains that little bit of English history. And for all intents and purposes he was a king of sort. And if we're getting all technical they didn't bring Charles II in to power after Oliver Cromwell died, it was only after his son Richard Cromwell serverd for less than a year did they do away with that office and reinstate the monarchy.

  • @SirMildredPierce

Cromwell was a brutal murderer and hypocrite. He "ruled" with an iron hand.

  • @coolmamac Yeah, I know, and?

  • Pretty cool.

  • The second picture of Queen Mary I is Kathy Burke's portrayal of Queen Mary 1 from Elizabeth. It is not mentioned.

  • Enjoyed the video, nicely put together.I'm afraid though that the picture used for Henry IV is not actually him. That was a painting of a Frenchman that someone in the late 16th century passed off as him. There are no paintings of Henry IV.

  • This is bloody comprehensive, well done! Been looking around trying to find videos of Mary II for a video I'm working on. I know one of the videos you used was "The First Churchills" but what was the other one? As comprehensive as this list is there are some good ones not included. Charles and Cromwell from "The Devil's Whore" are are spot on. Nigel Spivey's "Kings & Queens" and Alan Ereira's series both have lots of good depictions. Ch4's "Royal Deaths and Diseases" would have been perfect. :)

  • @SirMildredPierce I think the other movie was Orlando.

  • @Fonjil Who's the actor playing Elizabeth that appears before Helen Mirren?

  • @SirMildredPierce Mary II is also in the League of Gentleman: Apocalypse movie

  • @animegirlUK Thanks for the heads up! I've been meaning to check that out anyway and that'll give me a good reason to do so :) Isn't Christpher Eccleston in that too? If so then I can probably get my wife to watch it too... if you like this kind of stuff check out a new channel I set up called williewillieharryste it's all british history and other anglo stuff.

  • Wait, can someone tell me why Edward Longshanks is called Edward I? wasn't Edward Confessor the first guy in the vid?

  • @Theriot6592 They didn't differntiate themselves with numbers at that time,Henry IV would have been Henry Duke of Lancaster and William II was William Rufus. It was only later that Monarchs were numbered and this began from the Norman invasion as those prior to that were Saxon or British Kings. Those from William 1st were all of Norman descent.

Incedently,William 1 was known as William the Bastard....and I wouldn't argue with that,

  • Hey it seems like this soundtrack was made for this video.

  • @No2EUsuperstate i wish we still had monarchy in france!!!

  • this huge amount of movies about British history shows how Anglocentric our western culture is.

  • @Fichtenbrenner That's so true! lol I absolutely love english history..but I looked up other nations and they have just the same interesting, if not MORE intriguing history... but nobody knows anything about it. The whole six wives of Henry the 8th has become this HUGE thing with movies/tv series etc.. when Ivan of Russia killed more wives in much more twisted/dramatic fashion..nonetheless, I know more about english monarchy than I do about any other. And so does everyone I know.

  • amazing video. my favourites are anne boleyn and elizabeth.the strongest queens ever

  • Long live Richard III!

  • There lies a stone in London called the London stone, which legend has it was taken by Brutas a Trojian Prince who fled the fall of Troy in about 1070 AD . He fled across the seas untill he came acorsss a new land and called it New Troy. This New Troy latter became London. The stone was supposed to be the coronation stone used by the Kings of Troy. Both Dickens and Shakespeare refer to it in their writings.

  • Cromwell was Lord Protector, never King.

  • Sure, we'll be prepared =D for what..? for the death of the king!! why, is he sick? no, fool, we're gonna kill him >.< and simba too.....great, who needs a king? no king, no king, la la la la la laaaa =D idiots!!! there will be a king!! but you said....I WILL BE KING....

that should have been the music for this video =D

  • hey fonji love the video. was just wondering where you got that clip if king william IV. which program? as im sure you know he is david cameron's 5 time grandfather so it seemed weired to me when he came up.

  • WHY do I have to live in the US!!!!!???? The Brits have such a better history!

  • @84ccipollini but america and american history is also directly linked to britain by blood. a large majority of the first settlers were british, the founding fathers of america were british and even now it is said that bush, obama and queen elizabeth II are related so british history is in a way also american history.

  • um Great Britain didn't come till after Elizabeth's time when James took England and even then it was only an idea Britain wasn't born till the time of Ann Stuart witch was the last Stuart Queen to sit of Scotland England and Irland so to say "from Edward the Confessor to Queen Elizabeth would be wrong.

  • @Camouflage16 It says England and Britain as two separate states so it can include the monarchs before the formation of Britain.

  • @Fonjil

Long live the Monarchy and the Queen!

    Long live the United Kingdom!

    Long live all World Monarchies!

  • @PortugalIV Long live portugal, Portugal and england/britain have always been close allies.

  • @Fonjil could you redo this and say how they are related, as some people (if they don't know anything about history) will think that Mary I is Edward VI's daughter and that Elizabeth I is Mary I's daughter

  • excellent work! british history fascinates me!

  • KING EDWARD III- Lionel Plantagenet-Philippa Plantagenet-Lady Elizabeth Mortimer-Alice Camoys-Elizabeth Hastings-Elizabeth Dunn-Frances Mervin-Henry Cromwell-Robert Cromwell-Catherine Cromwell-William Jones-Susanna Jones-Rebecca Wilson-Wilson Cook-Mary Cook-Elizabeth Koger-S O Ackerman-Frank Ackerman-Laurie Ackerman-Angus Ackerman-Barbara Ackerman-Derek Johnson Sr-(ME)

    I'm royalty. lol

  • A very thoughtful and interesting work! Though you didn't mention your use of Queen Victoria in Doctor Who (6:02) in the description panel.

  • A very thoughtful and interesting work! Though you didn't mention your use of Queen Victoria in Doctor Who in the information panel.

  • interesting is it not? Kings and Queens claim their rule is by divine proclamation. Truly, were they installed by God, there would not be need for one iota of violence. Humanity is beset by paranoic megalomaniacal parasites and this is somehow to be revered.

  • I dont think lady Jane Grey was violent, I believe her family pushed her into being Queen then the disenhereted cousin Mary had her executed.

sorry if I spelt disenhereted wrong :)

  • what a great country is your britain, but remember you anglo saxons are also part of german peoples, so we are linked

  • I don't get it about the title of this video. It's well done, but "a history of violence"? Is the author accusing the British Monarchy of being violent? Is he anti-monarchist? Is he trying to make a general anti-British statement? If not, I would suggest changing the title to something a little less negative in its implications.

  • i think a more clicking title would be Monarchs:A History of Violence

    anyway awesome video

    cool music

  • Amaizing video Amaizing music, Great job, The times of old are very interesting and you have brought them togethe beautifully

  • Excellent job. I'm interested in the British monarchy, and it's very cool to see each royal brought to life, especially the medieval kings.

Are you planning to update this video with screenshots from the later seasons of The Tudors (Mary I and Edward VI) and whenever The King's Stutter (George VI) is out? Either way, well done, Fonjil.

  • elizabeth i was not violent.

  • @StarQualityWins See my post a few above.

And Lady Jane Grey was only 16, and Queen for just nine days. What was it, then, that made her "violent"?

  • @frantic1971 Queen Mary felt that Lady Jane was a threat to her throne, and even at first she didnt kill Jane, Jane's father planned a rebellion to overthrow Mary and put Jane back in the throne, and thats when Mary sentenced her to death. I also think that Phillip of Spain didnt like Jane and he was like "if you dont get rid of her, I wont marry you" or something like that.

  • @StarQualityWins ha hahahah ahahahahahahaha!! You must be very naive! Not violent?? She had people burnt alive and drawn and quartered!!

  • @plutogirllovekj Wrong and right have never changed. The use of sensationalism in news/history has been a constant threat to seeing truth. Medieval times have been greatly exagerated. Barbarism has never been acceptable. Elizabeth was an excellent Queen. She deserves full credit for a Democratic direction. Her coronation portrait portrays her well. She was indeed kind, intelligent,, brave, enlightened, and non-violent, Your stories are untrue, especially her sister Mary I of Scotts beheading.

  • @StarQualityWins Barbarism has never been acceptable? Have you ever heard of ancient Rome? Have you ever heard of Nazi Germany? Do you know what the Spanish Inquisition was? What about drawing and quartering? What about chattel slavery? Barbarism was the norm, until perhaps the middle of the 20th century in Europe, and in many places on earth it is still acceptable to do incredibly barbarous things. Women are stoned to death, girls are genitally mutilated, wake up!! Humans are beasts!!

  • @StarQualityWins Wrong and right have changed and will continue to change. Human morality has gone through a thousand revolutions!! You have no idea what you're talking about!! Do you think that the morality of the ancients has very much to do with what we consider moral today? Do you think that in a thousand years they won't look back in complete disgust at what we considered acceptable in 2010?? Are you a child??

  • @StarQualityWins I just visited you page and I can forgive a lot, but the butchering of a Shakespearian sonnet is just unforgivable!! May you burn in the deepest darkest depths of hell!!

  • @plutogirllovekj Contrary, you brandish your own tickets to hell.

  • Great shots and great music. However it is a little blurry.

  • I love the history of the english monarchy

  • Cate Blanchett as Elisabeth I..a great and powerfull interpretation

  • yeah, she captures the eyebrow-less beauty of the queen...

  • A great country---with great rulers.

  • that's why i want to go to England.. :D

  • Great video !! !! thanks 4 sharing ! could you please telll me please what's the music title ?!

  • The audio is from Immediate Music and it is called "Kingmaker". =)

  • Thanks Alot =) =)

  • Its a shame that the lives of the 2 stuart sister Queens, Mary & Anne is not documented the same as are other Queens.

  • Have you watched Simon Schama's A History of Britain, they'll be on there

Queen Anne i think was really important, creating the Kingdom of Great Britain

  • AMAZING DINASTY........

  • FANTASTIC! (However you didn't mention on your list of TV shows that you used Queen Victoria from Doctor Who :P )

  • very well done!!!!

  • Excellent music :-)

  • Queen Elizabeth!!

  • @scoutpangya which one?

  • Beautifully done. Too bad I live in the states. Our history is piss compared to yours!

  • I agree lol

  • Was that a clip of Mary II from league of gentleman: apocalypse?

  • You are a genius... I guess it took a while to make this vid... But it is soooo awsome... And you used a really lot of movies.... It is just beautiful.. 5* and fav of course =)

  • Yes Zooeyhall, he was murdered on orders from his wife, he had a red hot poker inserted into his anus, which in those days, was deemed to be the 'fitting' treatment for homosexuals. Poor, poor man.

  • perfect

  • Is it really true that Edward II was gay? And that he died in a particularly gruesome way?

  • It seems he was either gay or bisexual. His lover was a man called Piers Gaveston, a French knight. When he had to go to France to marry Isabella at the age of 24 he left Piers Gaveston as regent to rule while he was away.

When Gaveston was killed, Edward became close to a young English lord named Hugh Despenser.

Edward's interests were in entertainment, craftwork and boating which were not deemed suitable for a King.

He had four children with Isabella and an illegitimate son.

  • agreed :)

  • it is ludicrous that people should inherit power

  • compared to what some countries elect to rule. I rater inherited monarchies. Example Queen Elizabeth II of Canada, to George W. Bush Jr. of the USA. Hands down I rather Elizabeth as my Head of State.

also consider Hitler, he was elected as well. There is no perfect way to find a Head of State but each Nation to their own way.

  • True, but it is more entertaining also

  • thanks for sharing!

  • An amazing pageant of history!

  • Wow. That was really good, a lot of effort went into that, puts my vid to shame.

I forgot to include Matilda on mine.

  • So am I to understand that from this pretty good video, that every monarch from Edward the confessor has been represented by film or T.V by an actor?

  • An incredible catalog of truly amazing rulers.

  • monarchy used to have so much dignity

    unlike today

    alas

  • I don't mean the current queen

    but her successors

  • does anyone know what the music is?

  • Excellent vid, Fonjil! I hope that some of the kids (and a few 'adults'!), who dismiss this little septred isle, as an empirical monster, intent on raping, pillaging, and colonising every country and region on this earth, manage to see this, and look deeper into our history?! They'll find, as I'm sure you did, a history that far exceeds greed, pomposity &arrogance, but a tiny island group under constant threat, and attack, invasion, and, since 1066, pride in it's unfatiguable defiance! Thanks!

  • Henry VIII turned into a violent, misogynistic monster.

  • Excellent work!!! Thanks for sharing it with us :)

Could someone tell me what is the music used for it? Thx

  • The beginning and end music is taken from the TV show "David Starkey's Monarchy" and the music through the bulk of the vid is Kingmaker by X-Ray Dog.

  • @Fonjil where is the Clip at 3:12 from? and who is the actor?

  • Great video!!! very helpful! thanks!

  • So much history. Stunning. The monarchy is like some timeless beast that just keeps on and on and on...

  • Great vid!!!!!! loved it! Hollywood has probably made a movie about almost every English King and Queen!

  • Glenda Jackson and Quentin Crisp are my favorite Elizabeths! But you totally forgot Bette Davis' two portrayals of Elizabeth!

  • amazing and extraordinary job! congratulations...

    Excellent!

  • please make a video of all the spouses to the kings and queens please!!!!!!!!!!

  • You didn't show Queen Charlotte. Hope it wasn't because she was ethnic.....

  • I didn't show most of the wives or husbands. This video is really about the reigning monarchs not their spouses. The only real exception was Henry VIII, but then his six wife deal was a pretty significant part of his identity.

The idea that I didn't show Charlotte because she was ethnic is both ignorant and insulting.

  • Well then maybe you should change the title of your video because it clearly says Kings & Queens and in the more information tab, you clearly wrote "all the kings and queens of England and Britain."

  • Fair point, but I think it's pretty obvious what the video is about, and to take a cheap shot to imply some kind of ugly intentions in the making of the video is pretty low. You did not question all the other queens that were missing so you clearly got what the video was about.

  • Fonjil didn't include the spouses because seriously, half of them are not worth mentioning, how many people are going to know that Richard II's first wife was Anne of Bohemia? Sure they have there special place in history, some are more important than others, such as Isabella, (She-wolf of France), Eleanor of Aquitaine, Anne Boleyn, just to name a few. but this video was obviously not made for the purpose to showcase every single person that stood by their ruling spouse. Just the main rulers.

  • In youtube you only have 10 minutes to do a video..how do you think is posible show all the reigning monarchs and his o her spouses!?

Before criticize, do a video about African, Asian or American monarchs

  • Why can't people just be happy and enjoy the video?

  • mmmmm!!! then anne boleyn is more significant than lady jane grey...

  • Comment removed

  • Thats very great ! ^^

  • fantastic, excellent job, some frames are breathtaking and their juxtaposition with the music - wow!

  • Really a neat little trip through time.

  • Hey Im doing a project on Edward the Confessor and was wondering if you have any kind of video on him. Thanks

  • nice recap.

  • Very interesting and well done- history does repete itself

  • Excellent! Love how you incorporated events that were going on during each time period.

  • Edward The Longshanks!

  • my favorite monarch by far is Richard III despite his short reign

  • One of my fav. videos about the Monarchy on YouTube. Our Monarchy is sooooooooo interesting and after these lonf 1500 years, it's still a sort of enigma!

  • Fantastic video, you have obviously put a lot of work into it. Very interesting to see who has portrayed the monarchs over the years.

  • Good one.

  • Great vid!

  • love it.... never knew there was so many movies on ALL the kings and queens.

    thank you

  • Very nicely done!

What music did you use, by the way???

  • this video is very good! Bravo!!!

  • good work. love history. thanks for downloading. good editing.

  • Allthough I disagree with the title of this video, the amount of research and work that went into this is truly amazing!

  • England (God love her) had a brutal history.

  • @ArtsyFartsyGal Name one country on God's earth that doesn't have a brutal history!! Human beings are brutal, end of!!
