As wonderful a composition this is, Fagen's sorrow for drug addicts is unimpeachable. I get a sense he's had plenty of experience on his own, but he's been able to do what those he writes about cannot: kick the demon (such as Kid Charlemagne, Black Cow, and Any Major Dude, for example). "...one of these will screen out the sorrow--but where are you tomorrow?" His music is just a blessing to the rest of us, yet his lyrics can be equally moving...since you just know he's "been there."
