This pretty much captures the Angst and Anxiety of a pub band on a mission in the 80's. I saw them at the West Ryde Hotel. Packed to capacity and over they just friekin' rocked. Don't care for the bald bloke now but... The thought was there Pete!
I would say Peter Garret is a brave man. We observe the world, criticized it, blame politicians, but few go, it's easy to stay in our chair criticizing everything we observe, at least Peter was trying to change things, it does not operated but he try ! Stop criticizing the brave men !.... FUCK the jaded !
completely agree with ador, this is as good as it gets.. Forget all the labor political bullshit stuff these days, these guys were the real deal.. Stand in line is the ultimate
Hey Pete, I was the biggest fan of you guys, have two copies of everything you have ever recorded, love the passion and the memories of your work with Jean Meltzer and the real people at the Fitzroy Legal service in Melbourne during the 80's - still have your autograph - and now want to get rid of it all - my neighbours mother died in a house fire because of your dodgey insulation. You don't appear to have gained another portfolio - fame diminishing.
What's that you said Pete? "Don't wait for politicians to do the right thing for you; they've got vested interests..." Anyone else cringe at the irony and hypocrisy in that intro? Don't know much about Senator Garrett's politics these days but sincerely doubt he's a completely good apple in a bad bunch, without any vested interests (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). Pete, just reform the Oils and do a tour playing vintage material up to and including "Species Deceases" and I'll vote for you
Garrett had more political bite when he sang in the oils than he does as a Labor MP. At least his audience was listening to him then. It's all party line these days and he's been completely muzzled recently. I wish he'd go back to his rock'n'roll soapbox where he had a chance of making a difference to some peoples' attitudes. Bloody great entertainment too.
Forget the political ramblings. This band was THE best band of the 70's and 80's. Awesome live and a sound that sums up the hard edged pub culture of the time. Oils, Tatts, Angels...it didn't get any better than this
You are so absolutely right.... And if you were there, like us , you would know, just how awesome Aussie bands were, bloody brilliant, and we are, so lucky, it didn't get any better than this... Thank you :-)
Rather than go surfing or just sit under a tree receiving enlightenment, PG has ventured into the most vicious, venomous snake-pit in the land: Federal politics - GO PETE!!!
I've seen them only three times. I could still write a book about it. Or two. I have a PG song sheet from a gig and a handwritten letter from Hirst. Imagine: they take the time to write handwritten replies! Compare them to anybody any way you want - songwriting, intelligence, integrity, showmanship, instrumental technique, creativity, just being really down to earth decent human beings - and everybody else comes up way way short. Possibly the Beatles but after them and the Oils there's nobody.
i've followed oil's for 20 years seen them live 14 times, understand politics, Garrart had to go to labor to get some say in a world that only understands two political parties, where are the greens today nowhere.
give him a chance to show what he believes in,
even his party are weary of him speaking his mind as he might steer usn in the right direction. apart from that is'nt this the best we have produced in raw aussie rock with meaning.
now is the right time for garrett to be an ALP front bencher. rudd is a strong labor leader so innovative thinkers like garrett can influence policy without being a threat.
Peter Garrett is a lawyer with strong politics. He has to be moderate in order not to be branded a maverick and thus alienate the masses. He has to bide his time. He is a future Australian Prime Minister but has to get the runs on the board first. He wants to make a difference therefore inserting himself in one of the two major Federal Parties is the only way to achieve real change. Whilst I'm not entirely happy about his Kangaroo Valley tree clearing, he is still a man of the people in power!
Years ago I contacted his WHF office about the Koala thing. I got to talk to his press rep. Migod what a runaround I got. 'That lady is politically naive' he went on and he wasn't kind. He was RUDE. You might remember she came to Sydney and sat ALL DAY LONG at his WHF office AND HE WAS THERE BUT REFUSED TO SEE HER. So it Peter legit or not? I don't know. I don't think anyone does. But if you write to his site you'll get replies until you ask any key questions. Then they blacklist you.
mate. at least try to understand the intricacies of australian politics. the labor party has a broad range of views and is a better 'beast' now that PG is there. that great 'fucker' IS the legacy of the oils and those that want a better country in terms of social, environmental and indigenous policy should support him. people like him don't change their spots...
No shit. What a turncoat. Probably the biggest in the history of rock. I wonder what Rob Hirst feels about this. Not what he says he feels - what he REALLY feels. I bet he tries to not think about it too much. Years earlier he abandoned the Koalas too. I talked to his PR at the time. They said the people fighting for the Koalas were 'naive' and Peter didn't need to help them. Turncoat.
Saw them in a pub. They had to threaten to vacate the premises to quiet things down. Garrett towered over everything. Everything they did was precision. I got their song sheet from their sound manager Gary. Have it framed somewhere. Garrett wrote it. I asked Gary about the pandemonium. Never seen anything like it. Oh this is nothing, he said. You should have seen what happened last week. He was serious. Scared the shit out of me but these guys were used to it. That's scary!
This is the "Nightmoves" concert, (so named after the Australian TV show it was tapped for) recorded at the Melbourne Showgrounds, June 19 1980. The audio bootleg features 14 tracks and I believe is taken straight from the video. The video exists but I can't find anyone willing to trade it. For me, this is what the Oils were all about. What I've seen of this gig on youtube represents arguably their zenith.
@chikolocallo (feelin' worse and worse...) Man, what about the Goat Island gig? That was the real deal (and on a par with this, although post 10,9,8... which although great, wasn't as good as the 1st 3 albums era). Anyone got that in it's entirety or even just clips they'd like to post here? I'd be eternally grateful. Keep the faith! Oils rocked!
