I was there for that concert in London in Sept '97. People were openly weeping when he played that song. It was a moment I will never ever forget.
As if that wasn't enough of a performance, McCartney came out shortly after and played Yesterday, solo. As I recall, it was his first time at RAH since his days as a Beatle. Someone described the scene as sublime....truly was. BTW, Knopfler TOTALLY blew Clapton away that night. No contest.
I’ve seen other live versions of this where you can hear the audience cheering, quietly singing and clapping along, but when you can see that everyone’s listening so intently and it’s so quite that you could hear a pin drop like in a cathedral, you know the power of it…. It’s speechless, priceless, breathtaking, defies words and descriptions. It’s truly one for humanity.
Artists like these should live and play forever , proper music not like all Shit that's been coming out for past 15 years or so , I was born way too late and missed all best bands.
Dog - Iove you and thank you for this beautiful version. It is absolutely stunning in quality. Having the orchestra there ... well I'm speechless! Good job!
Love so many versions of Brothers in Arms, but this one ranks highest for me, that bit at 6:46 sends shivers down my spine, he's so immersed in the song. Beautiful.
51 you'll love it! been there to see Mr Knopfler at the Royal Albert Hall. Saw Dire Straits at Wembley arena in 1985, to name just 2 venues, the guy is magic.
Really good video and for a very worthwhile cause, if you get the chance go to the Island. The studio can be visited, the house that George Martin owns is open as an hotel, great pics on the wall by Linda Mc and the food and service is first class. Beware the rum punch, its the very best and extremely addictive.
Who is the percussionist with the tambourine? I see him in all the Royal Albert Hall performances, and/or with people like Knopfler, Elton John, and a lot of others... think his name is Ray ____ (something) can't recall the last name. The cool bald dude in the back.
Hey, I have no idea who this bald percussionist is but I was just about to leave a comment in here about how he's supporting this act when I saw your post . Have seen other percussionists standing in between their instruments playing and making bored moves as if they were backing vocals. But this guy seems to be fully focussed on the music and what hes doing....and he does very very well. Doesn't mean Mark Knopfler did not well.....sure he did, but that was expected :) .
Thank you DogSwede1! It`s really the best, the most emotional performance of this hit! In HD it`s wonderfull. Really thanks. Do you maybe know, it`s possible to find the full video of this concert?
And for the new visitors: don`t miss "Mr. Tambourine Man". He is amazing isn`t he?
Hey! actually it's possible, I have it, this concert is recorded on DVD called "Music for montserrat" i've seen it in many stores here in barcelona and also in internet shops so sure you can find it. good luck!
@af69bp21 I might get a bad comment from this, but almost all of today's music has gone downhill. Nothing can compare today to this type of music. At least that's my view.
@rainsizzle13 There is still good music out there, its just not so easy to find. The music publishers are so busy creating "product" i.e. disposable music and artists that they neglect the really good stuff still being "created" rather than produced.
this make me cry....
