This tune came out in March of 81. Rockin 'into the Night was 79.' Their Manager used to play drums in cover bands around J Ville around this time, and a little later.
Those 38 guys were cool. Barnes was hard to get to know. He thought Clapton was GOD! J VanZant's wife and Don Barnes' wife were good friends, and they kicked their guys asses when they came back from the road. They knew what they were doing. I saw a fight in a bar where Barne's wife was getting in the middle of some shit in a fight between Van Zant and his wife . Johnny slapped his wife and the cops hauled him off to jail. I always felt sorry for Barnes' wife.
38 Special was one of the first bands I ever saw live. I'm going to see them for the 3rd time in a few weeks. They do one of the best live shows around. I can't wait for the 20th: 38 Special, REO Speedwagon and Styx!
Friend of mine shared an apartment with Don Barnes, who did vocals on this track, when they recorded this in Doraville, Georgia. Peterik did alot of work with 38, but he did not give this song to them. Don Barnes was in a breakup with one of their back up vocalists named Carol Bristow. Carol wanted to move to Atlanta and pursue her ad jingle career. She told Don to ease up on the relationship ....Hold on loosely. He wrote alot of 38 songs about her....Caught Up In You, Etc.
Brilliant song! This song expresses such raw feelings experienced through the ages by most human beings. I first heard it when I was quite young, but it has now taken on the strongest meaning in adult life.
Too funny! Every single fact that you included is wrong. They got their name from a police raid on their warehouse. This was not their first hit. It was "Rockin Into the Nite." This song was not written by Frankie Sullivan, but Jim Peterik did co-write this with Don Barnes and Jeff Carlise. Donnie is NOT the younger brother of Johnny. he is older. Donnie and Johnny do not tour as a "southern rock duo." VanZant is a "country duo." And lastly, the band was formed in 1974, not 1975.
You're right. However Wikapedia(not credible) says they got their name form a 38 special bullet. I read in Rolling Stone (also has credibility issues) they got the name from a car the Van Zant's grandfather gave him. A 38 Buick Special. Who really knows? Still a great song from the times when music was music.
Wow! i thought id be the only one arguing this person just MAY NOT ever heard of 38 Special.... their FIRST hit wouldve almostve had to have been "Rockin' lnto The Night"and ive always been told that they got their name cause of police coming into the warehouse where they were practicing and having 38 special pistols on them. man some people that werent even alive when 38 special got going too funny
And they got their name not because of the ludicrous story you told, and not because of Lynard Skynard. The band has said in numerous interviews that they named their band after a 1938 Oldsmobile Special Series car that one of the band members owned.
Well Little Dude,You See You Aremore funny than l am Because l just happen to know what im talking aboutHold On Loosely was NOT their first hit Jesus they started in the late 70s That song didnt come out til 83 i think .Rockin lnto The Night came out way before your little balls ever came out of your Daddy! So take a pill and study NSYNC..Hold On Loosely Was the first hit in your lifetime.. lm sure. Buy all their albums then talk to me after you been listening to them for 30 years
Okay, apparently you are now aware, but a "hit" means a chart-topping song. Hits aren't songs that YOU like. They are songs that actually reach a spot on the Billboard Charts.
Hold On Loosely was the first song they put out that topped the charts. In case I'm going to fast for you, that would mean that Hold On Loosely was their first hit.
And yeah, you obviously know what you're talking about. Considering you didn't even know why they named their band.
Where in the hell do u get off telling a friend of the band what their first "hit" was. Like l said "Little Dude" no lets change that to "Pencil Dick"... Study NSYNC.LM NOT GOING TO REPLY TO YOU ANYMORE SO HOPE YOU HAD FUN PENIS WRINKLE!
It was not thier first hit. It was thier first #1 hit. Both the single and the Album hit #1 in the bilboard pop charts. They had a few others that made the top 10 before, but not quite to #1.
Hold On Loosely never made it to number one. That's why it's impossible for the song to be their first "number one hit". It was their first song to crack the Top 30 on the Billboard Charts.
Was I supposed to be reading instead of rocking out?

Yeah, you're pretty funny yourself.
.38 Special's first hit was "Hold On Loosely".
And they got their name not because of the ludicrous story you told, and not because of Lynard Skynard. The band has said in numerous interviews that they named their band after a 1938 Oldsmobile Special Series car that one of the band members owned.

Sorry buddy, you're wrong too.
Hold On Loosely never made it to number one. That's why it's impossible for the song to be their first "number one hit". It was their first song to crack the Top 30 on the Billboard Charts.
Therefore, it was their first "hit".

It's so damn easy, when your feelings are such
To overprotect her, to love her too much..
Hold On Loosely, but don't let go
If you cling to tightly,
you're gonna lose control
Your baby needs someone to believe in
And a whole lot of space to breathe in
Best advice someone could ever give you when it comes to love, dating and relationships!
