This is true. Back when Skid Row were touring there first record Dave Sabo told me each band member made .12 cents per record sold. The more established you are the better deal you can make for yourself. The actual band members make most of their money from merchandising... Tshirts, programs, ect while on the road. Michael Wilton from Queensryche told me during the Empire tour they made about 10K each per show.
Unfortunately it's not just major labels that do this kind of thing.
Dave didn't even mention cross-collateralization or any of the other shenanigans that labels use to make sure that they can make maximum profit while paying the minimum royalty to any band.
so pretty much nowadays if your planing on becoming a rock star your just waiting to make money for the record company so they could take all of it AND even then your still gonna owe them money cause no one buys albums anymore...then if you start to suck later they say see ya! haha damn
This is very similar to the games industry where the company that makes the game makes no money. If they are lucky they break even and are given the chance to go into debt again by making a new game. It sucks.
yeah this covers all the questions i have got about royalities very good explanation and being one of the best dam metal bassist ever people should take him seriously i know i do.
..this is why Major Labels are going the way of the dinosaur.... Karma for screwing over artists for decades. WE DON'T NEED YOU bastards!

But kudos to him for explaining it so clearly.

Very informative... so glad we do this on our own and license our music to the label and actually make a profit. Very nice.
