  • You'll hear Tommy say and sing "speckle", not "speckled". Roy Acuff dropped the "D" in his rendition. As a matter of respect and tradition, some artists still do the same. The lyric was written by Rev. Guy Smith as "speckled", a reference to Jeremiah 12:9 (KJV). No snow white doves or unblemished lambs here. God gathers up his children on the wings of an imperfect creature. Unusual, especially in the Old Testament. Perhaps of comfort, though, for plain, honest folks.
