From what I have seen people are either born with having a concience or they are not. I knew a guy who said he was diagnosed as having "anti-social personality disorder with sociopathic tendencies". He said that he had went through a lot of experimental medical treatments with electric shock therapy & all. He said that he had been "cured" of being the way he used to be but he was still incredibly screwed up when I knew him. Either he was lying to me or these "treatments" he'd had didn't work.

It's amazing how many people want to just lock people up and throw the key away when it is clear that only makes things worse. Rehabilitation works better than pure punishment.
There are ways of managing it though. Maybe some of these people need to be locked up for the rest of their life like dangerous animals, but some kind of program still needs to be implemented to somehow counteract sociopaths within their confines.
Who's "they"? Well when it really comes down to it, all human behavior is a product of involuntary chemical and electrical impulses in the nervous system, especially the brain. So there certainly is a chance to change sociopaths or psychopaths (keep in mind both mean different things, sociopath is not as pathological as psychopathy). What needs to be found is what in the brain produces psychopathy and change it....whether that be with drugs or some other treatment depends on what works.

Science has no advanced that far yet. Perhaps in the future. Long a time from now. At the moment the only thing you can do with sociopaths is lock them up and keep from running loose.
Ok I think the problem here is the terms we are using here. As far as I have read, sociopathy is somewhat different from psychopathy.....and sociopathy is much more induced by environmental factors where as psychopathy is something people are often born with. You can treat a sociopath, but not a psychopath as sociopaths tend to have a normal temperament and were probably the victim of parental neglect, poverty, ect. I think this video mislabels the boy, he's more of a psychopath.

Well actually I think many folks here are defining sociopaths according to the stereotype or even worse the media psychopath assumption. Sociopathy is treatable to an extent if the sociopath is persuaded to take that treatment. Sociopathy is not necessarily the same thing as psychopaths. Look it up. Cognitive therapy can be helpful in some cases.

@drh1111 You cannot blame parents if a child is genetically sociopath. Their brain is missing some wires and on a brain scan you can see frontal function deficits. Researchers have found that the brains of sociopaths function differently than normal people. And their brains function in a way that makes their emotional life unredeemably shallow. They don't feel empathy like we normal people do. It is not their fault.

From what I have seen people are either born with having a concience or they are not. I knew a guy who said he was diagnosed as having "anti-social personality disorder with sociopathic tendencies". He said that he had went through a lot of experimental medical treatments with electric shock therapy & all. He said that he had been "cured" of being the way he used to be but he was still incredibly screwed up when I knew him. Either he was lying to me or these "treatments" he'd had didn't work.

I really can't believe cat owners are this stupid. The only evidence against him is circumstantial at best, including a so called "confession" that wasn't even taped. He has only been ACCUSED of committing this crime, although everyone has already made up their mind that he is guilty. When/if he is acquitted or found not guilty, I hope he comes back and sues the prosecutors office for slander & libel. It's a very sad time in the United States when we assume guilt before a trial.

I disagree that a sociopath would never admit to being one. They know what they are-- a lot of them thinly conceal their lack of empathy. I told one he could get paid to have his brain scanned-- he chuckled, knew exactly what I meant and then inquired as to where. Easy cash is more of a draw than keeping their "true colors."

This kid fits the profile of conduct disorder (burglary, animal cruelty, violence) which also includes sex, skipping school and drugs. most kids with this grow out of it but the ones that dont become sociopaths. Since hes 18 i guess he's on his way. Sociopaths is in Cluster B of the personality disorders in the DSM. They have no regard for the truth, are irriable/agressive, consistently irresponsible and lack remorse. Mostly male, and superficially charming & intelligent. Treatment = jail.

Use your head a little more, locking them up for a long time will not change the situation. This guy needs treatment so he won't do it again when he comes out.
It's amazing how many people want to just lock people up and throw the key away when it is clear that only makes things worse. Rehabilitation works better than pure punishment.

Who's "they"? Well when it really comes down to it, all human behavior is a product of involuntary chemical and electrical impulses in the nervous system, especially the brain. So there certainly is a chance to change sociopaths or psychopaths (keep in mind both mean different things, sociopath is not as pathological as psychopathy). What needs to be found is what in the brain produces psychopathy and change it....whether that be with drugs or some other treatment depends on what works.

Ok I think the problem here is the terms we are using here. As far as I have read, sociopathy is somewhat different from psychopathy.....and sociopathy is much more induced by environmental factors where as psychopathy is something people are often born with. You can treat a sociopath, but not a psychopath as sociopaths tend to have a normal temperament and were probably the victim of parental neglect, poverty, ect. I think this video mislabels the boy, he's more of a psychopath.

And among the subset of the population that actually can be diagnosed with this, how many of them are actually violent or dangerous to people around them, rather than just being your garden variety asshole?

Well actually I think many folks here are defining sociopaths according to the stereotype or even worse the media psychopath assumption. Sociopathy is treatable to an extent if the sociopath is persuaded to take that treatment. Sociopathy is not necessarily the same thing as psychopaths. Look it up. Cognitive therapy can be helpful in some cases.
