How we ever found each other anywhere before mobile phones, I have no idea. I remember it well of course. You'd sit somewhere for ages waiting for someone to rock up, they wouldn't and you'd bump into them later maybe, or abuse them that night on the phone when they got home, hahaha.
You can so tell that 'Harry Enfield' was inspired by these two, any minute now im aspecting one of um to shout out ..... "if that painter wanted to paint me in the nude id say" "OI NOOOOO" "I like your pictures of the fat ladies but you are not painting me in the nude".lol
never seen or heard of it before was minus 11 years old at the time................see it on "my fave joke" and what a laugh. Sheer brilliance cant stop watching the bits where they are trying to contain their seriousness!!!!
I hadn't seen this before until I just watched "My favourite joke", I had to come on here and watch it some more. I can't help putting it to the bit where he starts laughing. Its just so funny.
Yes, just watched this on 'My Favourites Joke' - crying with laughter! Still as funny as the first time I saw it when it first aired! Bless them both for giving us so much laughter!
Pete's "shark eyes" before he destoys Dudley: "enjoy...sandwich?" is a great precurser to Scorpio's Clive . If you haven't seen it, check out the "Whale"' sketch, or better, pieces of the live recording, where he continually attacks Dudey. Still. there is ad--lib brillance that will knock your socks off.
Pete and Dud wrote a basic framework for these skits but they were largely inmprovised as they knew their characters so well, which is very rare in TV comedy. Only US Comic Jonathan Winters could match them in skill and humour.
@BlackMariaDownUnder Shouldn't say things like that together, it could confuse a stupid person !. When you watch the awful 'Smith & Jones' in the 80s / 90s, they just attempt to rip off Pete and Dud in many ways with their 'face to face' routines, same monotone accents ; t's embarrassing. Nothing is as good or original as Peter Cook, except Spike and Python and Python followed Spike & Pete but very originally if you see what I mean, with style & talent for writing and performance
Once Dud starts cracking, Pete shows no mercy! When ever a clip is shown of this sketch, they never use the ad-lib over the sandwich. Ironically it's the best bit eventhough it wasn't scripted. Love the way Dud cracks up again as Pete exclaims "Dirty Cow!" Very close to the knuckle at the time and Pete knows it! Dud was putty in his hands and for all the rows, there was always a strong underlying affection between both men. May their memory live on!
Geniuses at work! The ad libs are always great with those two: "Did you spit sandwhich at him too?" LMAO! These guys and The Goons were the high tide of British humour -- and that pretty well qualifies them as the high tide of ALL humour, in my opinion.
The bit about coal miners and judges from "Beyond the Fringe" still makes me scream with laughter after all these decades. Laughter truly is the best medicine.
Let us laugh at the silly cloth cap proletariat trying to make commentary on their half understood little world . Their larynx strangled accents show an imperious lack of restraint to the genuinely educated greater minds of polite society - whose true role is to comment on the art and beauty. Hilarious!
"If the bottoms see me looking they'll get all cagey..."
And what a wonderfully surreal thought that there might be hundreds of paintings hidden from public view because the gauze didn't land in the right place!
I'm not crazy about the sketch as a whole but it's my fave Pete & Dud one just for the fact that Dudley laughs so much while eating that sandwich. Hehe!
The way Peter pierces Dud with that stare at 8.59 after the ad lib about auntie Dolly makes him corpse even more. Brilliant.

He spends most of the clip with a very evil glint in his eye. It's not delight when he makes him corpse, it's triumph. :P
Sadly missed those guys.
