  • i had to pay for it , cause my macbooks is from 2006

  • i bought used macbook for 200$ (2007 version) and i got to the apple store and they repaired the cracks for free, even if i didnt buy the applecare waranty so the replace the keyboard housing, and the screen bezel. so it is not true for the 224$

  • what the fuck was the point of this video you jackass? i didn't learn anything. you don't need to teach people how to go and get their macbooks repaired.

  • my skool gave us all free mac books but NO warrantly and beuz they are there property we have to take care of them which i do .......... but becuz of the crack they are making me pay 1000 bucks for just that tiny crack which is not effecting the real computer just the apperecnce also three of my friends have the same problem

im so pissed and is that avalible in australia but now i think i should only pay the $224 but my parents wont

wat if u leave the crack?? but put sticky tape on it

  • (known issue) apple did the top case and bezel free for me, and I'm out of warranty.

  • OMG I'm outta the AppleCare and I just got a crack. I'm NOT going to spend $200 to fix this thing, I think I have just better off taping it :(

  • Call apple, and act a bit angry ;-) Say something like, i;m buying this 1200$ machine and i'm excpecting quality from apple and this is what i get?

    Please tell your results :P

  • Don't ever call in Apple when your outta AppleCare, because they will make you pay if you don't have warranty anymore.

  • Hmm here in Holland that's diffrent with this problem.

  • apple fixed mine for free... out of AppleCare. try again... and maybe an Apple Authorized Service Provider as they get paid to fix them and usually say yes.

  • Did you go to the genius bar? because they told me that I will have to pay if I go there without warranty.

  • i did. Apple Store, Jordan Creek, West Des Moines, IA. I'm actually going in again this afternoon as it cracked again. and I had no warranty whatsoever.

  • Thanks, I will try to go there.....cross my fingers!!!!!

  • got it back. done in 2 hours!

    references:

    Apple Store, Jordan Creek 515-440-6860

Repair Number (for genius to see other stores are doing this) R24149987

try multiple stores if you need to.

  • thanks a lot, I really appreciate it, I will try it this weekend.

So what exactly do I say, like my macbook has a crack on it and I take care of it really well. Other apple store fixes this for free without warranty because it's a known issue now.

Thanks it would be great if you could let me know!

  • sure. try something like I treat my computer very well, (I'll assume it hasn't been dropped) I haven't dropped it or put excessive pressure on it. It just started to crack, and I know this is a known issue from Apple and they are repairing them out of warranty. One store is the Apple Store, Jordan Creek in West Des Moines, IA.

Here's what my work authorization form said:

Issue description: customer states top case is cracking on left side

    steps to reproduce: visual inspection

  • continued:

    issue verified: yes

proposed resolution: replace top case from service stock

estimated turn around time: same day

Part Number 922-7601 - this is the black one, but the repairs cover white MacBooks too.

if they say no, definitely try other stores or keep trying them until they say yes. chances are you will get a new genius every time. I've had one great genius for most of my visits, he knows my MacBook.

  • OK thanks a lot, I will try it and let you know how it goes!

I should print out all that info to show them haha, and just tell them the part in the beginning!

  • @TerryCPiano did u buy apple care or was ur warrenty over

  • My warranty was over, but he said that my macbook was in a good condition, so he will fix it for me.

  • they said that it was now a known issue. try mentioning that.

  • I brought mine in today out of warranty, all I said to the genius was "I have a crack on my macbook", he told me to open up my mac and he typed in my serial number and got all the information. Without a word he told me that he will go check if there is a replacement for me, and yes. I will be picking up my macbook on saturday :)

Thank you for your help, if not I wouldn't even try to go get it fixed!

    ~Terry~

  • ahahhhahah

  • wow, so much for EVERYTHING MAC haha

  • how do you avoid getting the mac cracked? does anybody knows any tips in how to not crack it? like any advice cuz this fucking computers are to expensive and so fragil, so if anyone knows something let me know

  • treat it with more care.

  • that's not the problem... Apple knows its a problem and did mine for free with a new version of plastic. I'm out of warranty too.

  • Mine cracked yesterday.

Apple......make me laugh, they should be the best.

  • This just happened to me today. I took it into the Apple store to see if I could get it fixed, and they do. I only had my Macbook for about less than 2 months, and it's already showing signs of ware like the crack. I didn't buy the AppleCare, but my Macbook is still under warranty. Cost me nothing to fix and they already ordered the parts. I'm thinking of putting some rubber stubs on the top of my screen to prevent this from happening again.

  • does this new replaced keyboard top case include the media control keys?

  • Good question - no, it's the same keyboard used on the first versions of MacBooks. I don't much care for the new kayboard layout on the Santa Rosa/Penryn revision and I'm glad I have the first generation keyboard layout.

  • "that's how much your going to be spending on this thing if it happens to you"

Couldn't have said it better myself.

$224.06 for a couple turns of a screwdriver and a part made out of rice paper...

  • i thought that the apple protection plan didn't cover cosmetic damage.

  • Yes that is correct, however, I was able to explain to them that this wasn't cosmetic in nature because the crack exposed a gap between the exterior casing and the internal hard drive bay. Junk can get in between that gap and could mess up the internal workings of the computer, hence it can materially impair my ability to operate the computer in the future.

  • I have the same problem, can u get it fix for free?

  • If you bought your MacBook less than a year ago, or if you purchased the AppleCare protection plan, then yes Apple will pay for the repair. Otherwise be prepared to pay $200 for the fix (unless you know somebody).

  • Thanks, well I don't think I'm going to get it fix, cause I got it from a different country!

  • nice, thats awesome

  • haha cool intro and aww looks nice
