Can i use a top dead center stop tool to stop a harmonic balancer from turning? if i use a top dead center stop tool to immobilize a harmonic balancer will it put a hole in the piston? I didn't want to stick something in the fly wheel.
i have a 1984 toyota pickup 22re engine. i was thinking about buying this tool. would it work for tthis truck? does this tool work with all cars or just a few?
Excellent videos....! I´m restoring my 92 Camaro 305 TBI and as most of V8 SBC has engine components (manifold, heads, oil pump...) and external accesories (alternator, starter, TBI, AC Compressor...) Do you explain in the whole engine´s rebuilding process, the fastener size for each part to fit acording to diameter, thread pitch, grade, bolt lenght and torque values? Thanks in advance....!
@WilliamTang The engine seen here is a standard Small-Block Chevy shot-block with a 350 cubic inch displacement.
The engine was rebuilt on camera during the 'Basic Engine Building' project that we produced and then was placed into a restored 1979 Sea Ray cabin cruiser boat.
It is one of two engines that power that boat regularly around Marina Del Rey California to this date....
@sosotightt Our full length DVD called 'Basic Engine Building' shows the procedure to 'block' the flexplate from rotating while installed in the vehicle (found in the 'Engine Removal' section detailing removal of the torque converter bolts).
Basically, you can use a pair of vice-grip pliers and grab the plate between two of the teeth (with the torque converter cover removed).
Then as the engine rotates, the vice-grips will contact the bellhousing or another part of the engine and stop the crank
@BoxWrench Love the video..it was very helpful but I have the most important question I can think of right now. Can I replace my cam without taking the harmonic balancer off if If i have someone else hold the timing chain to the side or whatever i need to do? Its on a camaro 5.7 350 lt1 and i think its the same block as in your video! This is so important for me to know. Would you please get back to me asap? please and thank you!
This is a little off topic, but at 1:30 what are those holes in the engine block around the piston holes for? Weight reduction? I've always wondered...
@thekkl The small holes in a 5 star pattern are where the cylinder head bolts pass through the head and bolt in-place to the block.
The slightly larger holes are cooling passages that allow coolant/water to pass from block to heads.
There are also some other small holes around the front area of the #1 and #2 cylinders, they are either oil drain-back from the heads or additional coolant passages....
Oh man am I getting these. I pulled a balancer off of my 68 Buick V6 by hand, with nothing more than a pry bar and flathead. Dumb yes, exhausting, demoralizing, and discouraging? You bet ya.
@BoxWrench Umm i have a question whats that thing under the crank shaft is that like another windage tray? just wondering and also i wanted to know what will happen if you didnt tie down a bolt on the head?
@dunn98632 Most kits do come with longer bolts to thread into the balancer and that works great the first time you use the tool. Then it goes into a tool box for a year or two...
When it's time to use the puller again, and the bolts are no where to be found...we just want to issue the warning to not try and use the pulley bolts that may only thread into the balancer a couple turns.
We would stress finding the proper length bolts or buying new ones.
the one that was on my 77 mercury cougar has been on there for the last 33 years and came off extremely easy. i didnt have to stop the engine from rotating at all.

how do you remove the balancer that get stuck and dosen.t move
angulo3531 11 months ago
Using an impact wrench makes it faster. Most of these newer engines require a special 3 jaw puller to get the harmonic balancer,no bolt holes in them

what engine is it? Is it a car engine or a bus engine?

@ 4:08 how do you block a flex plate?

If I were to tell you that in taking off the crankshaft pulley, I have stripped the threads in 2 pullers, what would you tell me? I am stumped....

Never use an impact to tighten the I was lazy one day And bad stuff happens

@Ba1982transam That is a very good warning/suggestion.
Sorry to hear you learned that lesson personally.
Did the threads strip out of the crank nose?

Hell my puller kit came with bolts specific for this purpose.
