Grazie Cmq....
Billy Wright said he was the best centre forward he played against, and Nat Lofthouse said he was the best centre half. A pity there's not loads of videos of him on youtube. And an even greater pity for Wales he missed the 1958 1/4 final v Brazil; world football history might have turned out very different! But at least Juve fans haven't forgotten him, il gigante buono
If defenders were rated as highly as attackers when people write and talk about these things; if people were dazzled by the ability to bring people into the game as much as by individual brilliance; if people respected sportsmanship as much as they do flamboyance then surely, surely this man would have to be considered. My idol.
In my mind he's undoubtedly the greatest player to every play for Leeds. I honestly believe that there's a very good case to be made for him being the best player ever. Could Pele, Maradona, Cruyff et al have played in two radically different positions and have been absolutely world-class in both?
you can say di stefano and beckenbauer but i see what you mean. centre-half and centre-forward are two different positions and he played well in both positions in their basic sense
@tamlewell Yeah, what's astonishing is how rarely he gets picked in lists on youtube of greatest ever players- he was an outstanding centre half (easily good enough to be picked in defence alongside Moore in all-time British team) as well as top scorer in Italy, voted best ever foreign player for Juve. I've just enjoyed watching his interview with Dickie Davies; there's no arrogance and no false modesty either.
John Charles, e Galles, Grattzi. Belle homme.

Spettacolare, un regalo a tutti noi, juventini più giovani, che non abbiamo potuto vedere John Charles e Sivori al nostro tempo.
FORZA JUVE!!!

Born way after he played, but I can see why he's a legend. How can a guy so big be so quick and play all those positions?? Amazing.

Saw him in Swansea about a year before he died. Looked genuinely surprised and humbled when a young boy asked for his autograph. A great man.
