  • Its actually very good that Japan has this going Japan has many video games and electronics for kids to get too addicted to so these Nahage are doing this for a good cause.

  • now i know why Philippino people where they get jak en poy

  • They are not scary.....

  • Oh god. I've been so lazy. The namahage must have it in for me. Good bye world!

  • this is so.... COOL!!!!.... I LIKE IT!!!!, I want go there :D, Namahage Devils for the win

  • @LLew821 yeah namahage are one of my favorites too. I've got another vid of them drumming in summer time I need to dig up and post

  • @RoninDave ok, thanks man :D, and thank you for the upload :D

  • 0:00-0:06 date masamune.........:D....!! my favorite character in japanese history......!!!

  • i know that all the adults who used be scared by namahage think

that was a good old memory.

the laziness was a big enemy for ancient farmers in japan

so grownups should teach their children

if they are lazy they would have big trouble in their life.

  • oh fuck santa claus coming every christmas. i want a namahage to visit next year!!

  • なはげの顔がひろゆき氏ににているwwwwwwwww2:11

  • Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video :)

  • Are the Namahage in the category of Yoki or are they in their own category?

  • @kungfooed yokai? Yes they are typically listed as yokai. There are several variants of namahage

  • Awesome production! Those masks were great! They must be super expensive. Ive seen the Noh mask go for hundreds US... Man...

  • The prevention of children commiting sins is a common trait in almost every known religion in the world.

  • 神主が清めたなまはげ面に憑りついてしまった人間に笑った。いや、儀式は儀式なんだが善と悪の境界が曖昧すぎるw

  • @homeruyohomeruyo

    そこが日本らしさなんじゃないの・・悪い神もいい神も同じく神として祀る。西洋なら悪い神は悪魔になるでしょうが。。。疫病神とか死神、貧乏神、なんて言葉がいい例ですね。

  • what in this video is cruel to children?

  • Isn't this a bit cruel for the children??? :D

  • old ways were cruel sometimes but then again so were the times. Laziness in a wintry area could be deadly.

  • @bestiaccia Theirs no such thing as political Correctness in JAPAN :D, adults love to scare the crap out of the kids with this

  • Its like "Where the things are"

  • we should do this in england, scair the chavs away!

Do your work or the A.S.B.O monster will take u away roflmao. I may be lol'ing, but im quite, quite seriouse old chap. :(

  • mang and this is why i love Japan..the fact that they can keep folkoire and stories alive to this day....

    freakin awesome vid mang!

  • This was a great video. Someone is obviously jealous.

  • funny how this comment got the one thumbs down of the lot

  • good vid dave

  • Another great video!

    Great job man!

  • Well done video.

It will be nice to know it ahead of time so that I can see those events live.

Perhaps Namahage should come looking for me that I am not doing my research ahead of time.

  • Very neat video! Those guys are scary. If I was a kid, I'd be freaking out!!! I love that tradition...very cool.

  • Kanpai to you Dave! This was absolutely awesome! Thank you ever so much for capturing this wonderful tradition on video.

  • Absolutely!! It is rarely seen or known!!!

  • lol wow thats pretty cool/funny XD im gonna tell my baby cousins and kids that wen i get some lolol

  • Dave, those kids looked at you like you might just be a namahage... With a video camera. Kowai. D:

  • one of the theories of namahage were that they were shipwrecked european sailors from way back. Anyway so a bearded foriegner would get their little minds thinking he might be a cousin to the namahage

  • Wow! Fabulous! No wonder Japanese children can be over achievers and go to school on Saturdays.

  • LoL! I would too with the threat of some scary devil skinning me if I slack off too much!

  • I can only wonder how much better my work ethic would be if we had such demons here in the Southern United States when I was a kid...

  • Man I NEED a mask like that!

  • they were selling them or ones similar to them at the Namahage Musuem in Oga - but make sure you have cash. They don't accept credit cards way out there in the sticks. I still regret not getting one!

  • Excellent video, Dave!

  • now who gave this comment a thumbs down just a moment ago?

  • Great video Dave. I really enjoy seeing all these festivals and events and appreciate you taking the time to film and explain them, their purpose and traditions behind them. Thanks again

  • thanks!

  • i find it hilarious that most japanese demons target children lmao!!

  • in this case, it's to make the little buggers clean their rooms and stuff. I bet parents in other parts of the world wish they had Namahage!

  • That was a great video mate never seen that any thing like that.

  • thanks! It's pretty out there!

  • So was there any accidents involving that fire? Cause fire and hay doesn't seem like the best of combinations :P.

Thanks for the video, It's really nice to see japanese culture this close up. It makes me wish we had more culture in Sweden. All we do for festivals is dance around a wooden pole with leaves on it, drink moonshine, wear wooden shoes and sing about frogs. All in one occasion. That's pretty much all that we do in Sweden thats actually swedish. Alot of what we do is foreign culture.

  • I didn't see any but I did hear of a drunk Namahage who around New Years before this groped some women in an onsen
