Very well done. Question: The rotary wheel you use to put the black marks on, is that just rubber? And if so, will it wash off if people use the cups?
@AlwaysSeekingGod Thank you for your compliment. As I get so many of the same questions every day, I set up a page on Face book "Lesley's glass engraving club" please ask all questions there. Many thanks :)

You do beautiful work. I have been to your website, and your FB page. I cannot find out where to post a question because I would like to learn/know how to shade my projects. Thank you
hello, I'm Italian and Nando .. I do engraving on glass, but I can not do this type of work you see on the video .. I know what kind of tool do you use and what material is made.. I am interested in creating the shadows, so the design seems more real .. thanks and hope in your answer. your recordings are works of art, congratulations
@prassitele71 Thank you very much for your compliments. All these questions are already asked and answered on the Face book page: lesley's glass engraving club, along with much more sharing.

Ohh I fell in love with his work seems flawless I like the idea ofthe fragility of glass and strength of spirit if committed in his work and thanks for sharing grandis admire him
@poosaypirate you can use a dremmel, (although I have never tried) I only use dental technician drills: micromotor and also flexible drive drill. The drill I am using in the video is a micromotor.
Thanks very much for yours and previous compliments. I do read and appreciate every one :-)
I have a very large dust extractor and I wear a mask...and I use water when working with diamonds and stones producing most dust. 27 years on now and all is well in the lung department....I don't smoke either :-)
I've tried sending you a message on your email address and no answer. I'm simply wanting to know what kind of rubber wheels you are using and where to purchase them. I have everything to start my projects but those. Please let me know something. Thanks. Steven McKenzie
brilliant work , thanks for uploading your work, but I hope you are using infront of your work strong ventilation/sairsuction unit to remove glass dust during your work, I believe in long term thes dust will harm you. hope that strong nosie is the same suction unit noise.
Thank you also for your concern, I mention right at the beginning of this movie that the noise you hear is of the dust extractor and the drill, yes it is a biggie!
hey lesley nice work i just wonder is it possible to learn this art who is not in painting or art media pls guide i mean anu commoner can learn this by seeing your video, can you post one more about getting started with it
ps....and many engrave without water either. Water does keep the dust to a minimum and lubricates the burs for a cleaner cut and ensures longer life...of the bur ;-).
Thank you. I always use a mask , also a large dust extractor, not shown in this video, I also work with dripping water, also not shown in this particular video. I have never heard of an engraver being poisoned by any lead in the dust and I know that many engrave without an extractor, but most will use a mask.
i love your art work, i have been doing glass for several years, i got kinda hooked on sand blasting though, what do you recommend when using the dremel how to make realistic looking human hair? thats one thing i always get frustrated with also to shade the face i have tried to do face out line and eyes and everything and then come back over with a sand blaster to try and shade , but i cant get it to look right, i guess its the shading part that really makes everything go wrong.
What professional and beautiful work you do! I just wondered why you didn't run water over the glass as you engrave, or is that not needed? Don't you have to keep glass wet while drilling?
Hi there, thanks for the compliment, I would have used loads of water for the initial diamond work not shown in the video. Water is not necessarily essential, it depends on the effect you require. For deep heavy work it lubridates and enables a smoother and easier cut, it also reduces the dust, helping the bur to last longer. I generally don't use it for the stone and rubber work or the final highlights shown in the video. Old worn out diamond burs should not be used dry.
Wow your work is amazing Lesley, I am kinda getting into glass engraving myself but only have a basic dremel and diamond bits at the moment. Do you ever add colour/glass paint to your work at all?
The first can be deeply cut, the last bits of "resist" removed can have a fine soft mist of sandblast for the darkest tone. A good method for colour overlays.
Oh definately, you can cut away parts of a mask at varying times and sandblast different depths for some fantastic effects, you end up with engraving that has more of an air brush effect. Some engravers use this method just about exclusively.
This absolutely outstanding. I was wondering, what if someone wanted a batch production of a complex design i.e. say someone wanted 10 identical mugs like youve made. How would somone make them indenticle. Is there any machine out there than can do a similar job. Cheers

I can certainly create artwork designed for making a mask, even with all the little strokes as you see them, then sandblasting as many beer tankards as you want, or even a photo effect sandblasting, or computer run diamond engraving...but unless you hand engrave the shading, halftones and highlights, final touches and details, this effect cannot be acheived exactly more than once.
If I was to totally hand engrave it again, it still will not be identical, just as a painting has brushstrokes, even the burs change their effects as they wear, and whether you use them wet or dry, with different pressure and speeds....each hand engraving is totally unique.
Aah thanks for the reply Lesley. So basically what you are saying is that you can do the masking/sandblasting technique to some vague effect but then would have to touch up manually?

I can certainly create artwork designed for making a mask, even with all the little strokes as you see them, then sandblasting as many beer tankards as you want, or even a photo effect sandblasting, or computer run diamond engraving...but unless you hand engrave the shading, halftones and highlights, final touches and details, this effect cannot be acheived exactly more than once.

I'm suprised at the wounderous effects you get with the rubber attachment, but I was a bit suprised that there is rubber resdue engraned in some of the groves... do you have this problem and is there an adequate way to fix it or do you plan it so you eliminate such things when you do the final diamond grinding?
Gnarledwolf 5 years ago
Any rubber left in the grooves is very simply washed out and using a soft brush if necesary.

This tankard is Tudor Crystal, thick and heavy, soft to work on. Lead crystal is by far the best to work on and I don't waste time on cheap glass unless it is basic sandblasting for a customer (eg company logos on many glasses). Lead Crystal shows the work brighter and clearer.
