I was on the Kop that night. I was only a kid at the time and I used to perch on the left hand side metal upright pillar (as you look at the Kop) at every game. Very uncomfortable to be 10 foot off the ground, have your feet stuck at a 45 degree angle and to feel the need to hang on as though your life depended on it for a couple of hours.
There must have been around 30,000 on the Kop that night. Davey Fairclough was an old mate of mine from the area where we lived. Did you realise you'd become an Anfield legend when you scored that goal, Davey? I do miss the good old days! Is it any wonder now that the old Kop has gone the atmosphere could never be the same except for important matches?
It's not just about the Kop these days though, the whole ground needs to be up for it to create a cracking atmosphere. But that can still happen when it's called for. I'm sure the Anfield regulars of today appreciate that they have a lot to live up to.
I am a lfc-fan since I was a little boy from former DDR. It sent shivers down my spine when I saw the spot. Amazing unique English atmosphere!! It was a glorious time, wasn't it? I always put my "KOP" badge with pleasure. YNWA! Shit German soccer!!!!
the saint etienne fans was so impressive by the atmosphere, that they was thinking ( and still thinking "liverpool-asse-coupe-clubs-champions-76-77-mars-1977" ) there was 70 000 at anfield !!!!!!!!
from a chelsea fan, i actually feel lie crying because the atmosphere in england was the best but now... i remember besiktas getting the world record of loudest fans of 132 decibel and liverpool held the record before of 130dB in 2005 but everyone knows the english atmosphere has gone shit
@joshcfc8 These days its all fucking drums and microphones, is that atmosphere? I prefer the English atmosphere because there is not a single team where the supporters use that shit. Here in Holland, even the scum (Ajax, capacity 50000) needs drums to create some noise.
Now that support is awesome.i could spend hours watching these old games in my spare time and do which annoys the wife but what the hell there outstanding,Thank you to all the guys who put up these up.
can't imagine that anywhere ever was a better atmosphere than in the kop those days...
it's sad that english support is going down just because of seats! don't you stand during the matches anymore? 'cause they put in those seats in my hometown too, but we don't care at all and stand and shout for 90', or are you going to be locked out for standing??
@widijun At Liverpool now, we have an area at the back of the Kop where everyone stands for 90 minutes. It's called Block 1892 (Block 304, 305 and 306 together). And at away games, all fans of English clubs stand all the time. It's not just seats that have ruined the atmosphere, it's the ridiculously high prices of the tickets and so many lads have been banned, some for life. There's CCTV all over the stadiums, anyone who lets off a flare or a smoke canister is banned for life. It's a joke!
@dirlewanger42 You're right lad, I travel all over Europe and the Ultras put the atmosphere in Premier League stadiums to shame. The best I've seen are Besiktas a few years ago when they beat us 2-1.
Our Spion Kop was destroyed in 1994, this new all-seater 'Kop Grandstand' will never ever come close. The only night when it really came alive again was the Chelski semi in 05, that was a genuinely awesome atmosphere but in the normal league games, it's utter shite.
@KopiteP250505 I'm a blue but was in the boys pen this game as a kid, also went vs Trazbonspor, this was before things got bad between our fans (wasnt a bitter kid!) & H8 to admit it but great nights, Not just slagging the Kop but all EPLgrounds ours included. I also travel to Europe just to watch games, got family in Germany so watch Hertha, but agree Greek ultras the best & also Serbs, Rapid Wien great too, Ultras are true fans
@dirlewanger42 We haven't played a Serbian team for a long time. Would love to go to Belgrade if we drew Partizan or Red Star though. I've been to a few Borussia Monchengladbach games - our fans are mates with their's.
Agree 100%, Ultras are proper fans! I hope future generations see the Ultra scene emerge here, I know a few clubs like York, Palace, Stanley have groups. It's not easy when the media portray them all as hooligans cos' of stabbings in Italy when English teams have gone there.
Anfield when it's in full voice cannot be competed with.. Liverpool's stadium capacity is 45,000-48,000 yet is louder than the 60,000 stadiums in the prem.. Old Trafford, Emirates, White Hart Lane. Stoke City and Newcastle have fantastic home support as well
Bring back the old days, the days where the fans were the most important thing to the club and the days where there still was atmosphere, passion in the stands and cheap tickets, and the players played for their club not for their fucking pay check...
I was in the kop that night. when Davy Fairclough put the 3rd in we all jumped up and one of me shoes came off...never saw it again. what a night. The roof physically moved up a few inches with the sheer power of the Kop. Happy days.
I was at that game when i was 11years old , i was at the anfield road end becouse i was just a boy , the kop looked awsome from there for that game. I will never forget that match.

He has no idea how lucky he was to witness such great times but they have gone. Football is a greedy game now, theres no hunger anymore.
i was there aged 15 . a magical night that will live in my memory forever. a atmosphere that will never be repeated at any ground around the world again
I've had a fair share of games at full house Red Star Belgrade FC (100000 capacity before the bloody seats were put in) stadium. Atmosphere at quite a few of those games was absolutely unbelievable. However, nothing compares to this game. I remember it well even though I was 14 when I watched it on TV, I think some of the goosebumps are still visible on my arms. The best noise ever!
this was some game,my dad was at this match, that was when football was football,no money grabbing, unloyal pre madonnas back then, then capitalism kicked in,and the country went money mad, stab you in the back for a xtra penny, fuck modern and wot it stands for

this brings tears to my eyes i woz born in old swan an brought up in london but stood on da kop many times, me ma an pa r in there 70s an dis woz for ever da game 2 see wot a night
I was on the Spion Kop for this match. I was only 15 and had never experienced anything quite like it. First time I'd ever seen the entire ground singing at once. The place was shaking. In those days the Spion Kop was awesome.
it's interesting that Alex Ferguson was at this match at the time he was a young manager at St. Mirren. He said at the time he couldn't believe the atmosphere and that's when he decided he wanted to manage in England. He used to be a big admirer of Liverpool
yes there was then... now, since the uk and government turned its back on us, you dont see 1 union jack there... some spanish and some liverpudlian flags. nothin else
Les chants anglais, ceux qu'on n'entend plus à la télé à cause des commentateurs pourris de TF1, de la pub avant le match, et des prix élevés des places qui poussent le supporter populaire en dehors du stade!!! :-)
Used to go to Anfield a lot between 1978 to 1984, The Road End and The Kop were both great for atmosphere. The Premier league is awful for real fans, high prices and no atmosphere.
it was not long to go then god made the maddest and barmy first and footballs first adidas wearing best dressed one only wedge theres only one way out anny road end best days of my life we were footballs first and we are liverpool fc god bless the 96.
brings me back to my youth.got the boat to liverpool when i was 15 with 2 friends.got drunk.went to the match. man u had a shit keeper paddy roache. jeez he threw one in the net. but the singing was like this.when i go now my son says why arent they singing aghhhhhhhhhhh
fuck!! i wish it all would come back!!! that was football!!! no the misery you see now in anfield, its pathetic, im a liverpool fan but it depressed me when i see the games in anfield these days,
Great atmos. I s`pose all-seaters had to happen, but the old atmosphere...in the Kop, Stretford End, North Bank...(insert your team`s famous terrace stand here) simply cannot be replicated now.

I was actually there as a 13 year old. There were thousands locked out outside.
I couldn´t breathe in the KOP that night.
I have never felt an atmosphere anything like that ever again and I doubt if I ever will
I wish somebody could have made a documentary of thar one in a million evening.
As we were pushed heaving out of the ground an old bloke next to me said, "that´s it, I ain´t coming back again, another game like that would kill me!

Used to go to Anfield a lot between 1978 to 1984, The Road End and The Kop were both great for atmosphere. The Premier league is awful for real fans, high prices and no atmosphere.

Great atmos. I s`pose all-seaters had to happen, but the old atmosphere...in the Kop, Stretford End, North Bank...(insert your team`s famous terrace stand here) simply cannot be replicated now.

@1:26 you can hear the "thud thud thud"on the floor as the kop bounces...brilliant.
