Michelle Kwan was so much better (my opinion). She deserved the world title that year and should of received perfect sixes for Song of the Black Swan.
@flaming188 "Black Swan" was the next year, 2001. I agree that was a perfect program -- although some people say they don't like the music because there "aren't enough highs and low in it." In this competition (2000) Kwan won with "Red Violin."
She under-rotated the (f)lutz, flip, and stepped out of both 3/3 combinations, so I can sort of understand the technical score, but presentation was too low. She's definitely better than Gusmeroli.
I think if she had landed just 1 of her 3/3, she should have medalled. But with the way the judging was going at that competition, I think she would have finished off the podium no matter how well she skated. The politics was in for Butyrskaya and Slutskaya.
This is my favorite opera, and the choreography to this is horrible. There are so many different themes to take advantage of and vary the routine, but that didn't happen.
The choreography was clearly an expression of the music, not necessarily the theme of the opera... I've never seen a performance of Turandot, but as a musician and someone who's seen a million people skate to this music, I very much appreciated not only the expressive sensitivity to the nuance and phrasing of the music, but the smooth and elegant presentation of Sarah's skating basics that I think really suit this lilting and flowing piece of music. I'm curious to know why you would disagree
I consider skating an extension of dancing, but on ice. Picture a modern dancer just walking around the stage during this expressive music, just to prepare for one or two impressive jumps or pirouettes. The first half of the routine is spent looking like a warm up (watch it on mute, you'll see) during a high energy, eastern modal percussive theme. This is not Sarah's fault, but artistic expression is just as important as the jumps.
No kidding!!!! This is a horrible choreography! Such a beautiful piece of music, this choreography has no passion whatsoever, I don't see her connecting to this music at all!!!
Yeah, I think the program was a little too... mature for her at the time. She moves with a lot of grace, but you can tell it was limited to her limbs.
And I think the choreography would've been more genuine and appropriate had she felt the music more...
Still, she WAS only 14. Besides that, she did WAAAY better than I would've done at that age! Haha!
too bad she missed those 2 triple-triple jumps. She probably would have been in 3rd place or probably even 2nd if she successfully landed both of them. I definitely think she did well here. 5th place finish.
She had no shot of a medal even if she had won the free skate. Mathematically she was already eliminated before she event skated, with the results of qualifying and the short program. Keep in mind Maria who was only sitting 3rd at that point had won the q round and short program, while Hughes was 3rd and 5th.
Minor issues but still incredible for a 14 year old

Dick Button said "no one else did 3-3..." That's right, and neither did Sarah! LOL. Still, an amazing competition for one so young.

But eventually she would get it all done in one program :)

Definitely NOT better than Gusmeroli is what you meant to say. Gusmeroli's performance had character and emotion. This was by the numbers.

I like the music and I also liked the programme, but Shizuka's performances are unbeatable!

She looks SO much older than 14. I know she was young, but this program just doesn't go with the music. Robin Wagner is NOT a chreographer.

I really think that she should have finished ahead of gusmeroli, though. I think Dick agrees with me...
