After listening to Leontyne Price and Kathleen Battle, neither of whom did credit to this hymn, consider that... Kiri's interpretation is absolutely perfect. Quiet passion, perfect articulation (you hear every Latin word), lovely modulation (never out of control staying within the same volume range), and wonderful expressiveness in the way she caresses each sound. I know this piece well and this is perfection!
Kiri is one of the finest modern opera singers today! She shows restrained passion and expressiveness in her finely modulated voice. The nature photos were a good complement to her singing! Thank you!!

Hello everyone! I have just uploaded my Ave Maria singing right on my channel. I did it because I would like to know ur opinion about my singing skills. And I would be extremely grateful if u could estimate it and leave a comment for me. Thank you for advance guys!God Bless!
At the end of the day tho' we have to remember that M. Bach was just a musician who wrote greatmusic . He would tho' have turned in his grave if he'd heard this embellishment to his tune, although it is, I admit, very pleasant , I think therefore I was.
This reminds me of the Maori Choir dressed i blue and gold gowns and singing this beautiful song in Latin at Manu Ariki Marai in February 1995. Thank you so much for posting this beautiful video and especially Dame Kir Te Kanawa for singing so magnificently!

I'm sorry, you can't. Even if you are able to mimic someone's voice, it will not sound as natural as the original singer. Trained ears can still tell the difference. Classical singers sound individually different if they have had proper training.
This has got to be one of the all time great performances of Ave Maria. Consider her phrasing, dynamics, and what violinists call vibrato. They are all incredibly beautiful. I especially like her phrasing. She is a consummate artist.
ImpossiblyLost asks if anyone can match Ti Kanawa. Beyond any shadow of a doubt her own countrywoman Frances Alda had a better voice and much finer technique. Kiri always gives an exciting performance but she is all over the park and not always in tune. Alda regularly sang with Caruso and their years together at the Met have never been approached far less matched.
Can anyone match this? This is heaven. If you think Kiri is ever sharp on anything then I can assure you it sounds better that way. It was meant to be. Flat and fuddy is whats off.. Sounds to me like the recording equipment just couldn't capture all that sound at 2.06, therein lies the distortion. Its not even flat. It's not live, its only "memorex" Can any of you lift a high F#/Gb with that kind of oomph, power and beauty? Y'all need a spanking for criticizing the voice of Heaven. Bop!
ImpossiblyLost: I completely agree with you. My voice teacher always tells me "better slightly sharp than slightly flat". And I think that high note at the end (it's a Bb) sounds better when it's slightly sharp. It gives it that luminous quality. All in all, I didn't get the impression that Kiri was sharp at all throughout this recording - just that heavenly luminous quality that makes it so magical.
Remember Christians, the will of God is no Catholic, Protestant,Orthodox, Penticostal, Adventist, JW, Etc. NO DIVISION, Only Christians, holy, helping and sharing instead of buying and selling.
"That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me." (John 17:9-21)
my ear is a burden too, i just hear things others don't. she teeters on sharpness throughout, hitting it like you said at 2:06 & then through to maybe 2:11-2:12, i didn't watch the clock that closely. :)
having a good ear, ppl can take the wrong way. i am not critizing so much as pointing it out. (educating) do you know what i mean?
i completely know what you mean. i mean, it's good if ur going into music education (which I am), but it's a little difficult for me to enjoy music without hearing imperfections..
Hmm...I sure would not want YOU as a music teacher. I'm also a music major, and it's probably even more important when listening to music, especially at this level, to relish in the beauty of it. If Dame Kiri isn't up to your standards, I'd hate to think if what you'd think of 6th graders. Kiri's pitch is absolutely amazing compared to most singers. We're used to hearing singers under pitch, so hearing that high note a bit sharp adds more of an artistic feel, she's an artist, not a robot.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i don't know who u listen to, but none of the singers i listen to sing under pitch. I know all about bending the pitches based on emotions and such but there are much better ways of achieving "artistic feel" than singing out of tune. No, she's not a robot, but she is a professional opera singer who should, in essence, be A LOT better than a robot. There's no excuse for intonation issues when ur a professional......period.
@CracknHack it's this magical thing called "relative pitch". The vibrato centers around a pitch, which is something basically every professional uses. Do you think no opera singer has actual pitch? ...because they all use vibrato, some even more than Kiri.
Actually, the vibrato, whether voice or any other musical instrument mustn't "center" around the pitch, but waver below the pitch and back up to the pitch. If you go above the pitch the human ear will hear you as sharp. The ear doesn't like sharpness, but can live with flatness (temporarily...as used in a good vibrato) just fine. The best example of this is to try vibrato on a stringed instrument or trombone and take it ABOVE the pitch. You'll hear what I'm asserting instantly.
Hit W..S..Coffee you raise a very interesting point....you have me thinking like this: if it were a piano backing her up, the "sharp singing" issue would discussed in terms of EQUAL TEMPERMENT. However, this arrangement uses harp, strings ect.
and, we don't know if this performance is in F# or Gb. ... that makes a huge
difference in tonal perception. And very much so since the high note (2:06) is part of a major third which follows right behind a suprise diminished chord.
This version of the aria actually gives my the chills. It is sublime, transcendental . .. I feel like some higher power is reaching out through this song. *sigh*
I can't stop listening to this...my teacher just gave me this piece, but told me to sing it in F major (a half-tone lower than this original) instead, because of the high Bb at the end which I'm sure I won't do justice to. But this original key sounds so much purer and more heavenly...especially with Kiri's voice.
Hi! I feel my words too poor to express my admiration... I, also, sang in my Faculty (I graduated Philosophy)...but I wish I could sing so beatifully! My name is Irina-Maria. Yours?
I agree that some major keys are more "heavenly" than others. Shame you can't get that Bb! I can't get a nice Bb either yet. I'm sure you'll pull it off eventually, at which point you can sing this in the original key. Until then, I'm sure you'll enjoy it anyway. It's a gorgeous song. :-) And Kiri's voice is gorgeous.
Well, there are a lot of singers who do justice to this version of Ave Maria and on this occasion one stands out, the control and purity of voice from Dame kiri epitomises her complete professionalism.
bazzj - you write: "the music is mostly gounod, based loosely on bach's prelude in c." That's not correct. Gounod uses Bach's prelude exactly as Bach wrote it, with only one (minor) change: he inserts one new bar between bars 22 and 23 of Bach's prelude. Gounod also put a melody over Bach's music that follows Bach's harmonies to the letter. All in all, there is nothing "loose" about Gounod's adaptation. Quite the contrary: it is extremely faithful to Bach's original.
A friend of mine asked me to compare this to the version of Andrea Doig. Dame Kiri's voice is like an angel in heaven! I'm afraid Ms. Doig's rendition comes from the other place!

I think Kiri is amazing. I love music for what it is.
As for music and voice teachers. Those that do. Do. Those that teach. Teach.
It is easy to teach pupils to do what is seen by others as right. But the greatest moved away and become great by feeling what they felt was right.
I am yet to hear of a great teacher who was responsible of those that walked the path.
