  • When he said "from craft to science" @ 41:12 it really hit home for me. For close to a decade now, I've been a chemist by means of cooking, I've recently decided to go from practical to theory, enrolled in a community college and hope to get a degree in chemistry. Thanks for the series of lectures MIT.

  • He looks kinda overdressed imo but great lecture nonetheless.

  • Didn't know that Robert Mitchum knew all about solid state chemistry.

  • ehm bin ne sau

  • 240P wtf

    were not in africa

  • @Markmaclean5 bitch nigger cry more

  • I want solid stare drives goddamit! not this crap..

  • thanks for posting this one..

  • very good prof

  • i like this guy, heh

  • He is very good teacher , but he did a spelling mistake .... there is not any Greek word "τομοί " I think that he wanted to write " τομή " that it means slice and with the " α " in front of the word τομή it means indivisible .....

  • i wanted to see the periodic table scene from ironman2 ... i am here now ... its a small world on youtube ...

  • Ok the ending was sad. That is actually a perfect depiction of the elemental phases of matter. Earth being solid, Water being fluid, Air being gas and fire being plasma. I actually thought he was going to play a trick on the students but no...

  • kinda funny how much they paid to get in and hes got them sitting on the floor lol

  • Great lectures!

  • Thank you

  • Thanks for the information

  • He is a very good teacher

  • But how do you energize the batteries, don't you have to use gasoline? Seems like we will always be burning something for energy?

  • Do not be resistant to analyzing new methods of approach although sometimes new proposal seems ridiculous. Take a moment however short to use examination.

  • How can it be Solid State when it's Chemical?

  • The professor is confusing the word function for property. He notes different possible properties of a container to drink from, but that's not what first mentioned. He first highlighted the function and then continued to call it different possible properties.

  • Great Professor.

  • YAAAA going to ut next yr... i wonder if i'll ever end up in mit >.<

  • i wish i was in MIT

  • What is Solid State Chemistry?

  • 36:50 is when lecture starts...

  • @0001kd yeah, might as well jump to #2

  • @0001kd thanks for saving me a whole heap of time

  • 30:40 How many Global Warming scientists passed 3.091 at MIT and followed this code of conduct..."Don't publish result that you faked"

  • I had no idea that Howie Mandel taught chemistry at MIT!

  • Does anybody else think that this guy looks like Ryan from Who's Line is it Anyways?? :P

  • I like this guy, he's cool and loves what he does

  • College for free. Hell yeah.

  • @Robertamissoniluv I'm Down with the Free College.

  • @KSATica But no degree lol

  • this man can lead people into battle sack the politicians sack the generals

  • So smart..

  • This is a dictator

  • By the way professor, science is not what "moves forward", learners of science do,

although I understand your obvious connotation. Sciences are perfect, and reward the TRUE scientists with their secrets.

  • 41:37 Democritus, the laughing philosopher. The so-called eminences of the time used to laugh at him; Democritus used to be deemed crazy, lunatic, and a long etc of whatever pop-terms the culture-followers were given... But I am sure he used to laugh at their so-called wisdom and lack of productive lives mirrored in their sour and fearful ways.

  • Take all the notes you can before WMG has the audio muted.

  • Oh yeah, not only is electro-chemistry the foundation of the subject, it is all over it....

  • Professor is correct when he declares electro-chemistry the most important branch of chemistry; it explains the rest of subject; anything chemistry has its foundation in electro-chemistry; it even tells about magnetism... He is not joking at all; if only all students were studious they would perceive it, even if superficially.

  • these kids kill themselves trying to get into mit, we watch youtube and get the same classes. lol thank god

  • @success4111 By "kill themselves" you mean "study hard"? What do you need these lectures for if you aren't planning to study? If you want the knowledge you don't need online lectures, all you need is a textbook. You can attend a local university free of charge, you won't get the degree but you won't have any problems attending the lectures. But you won't do any of those things anyway. It's very hard to organize yourself. THAT's what a university is for. Well.. Not only that.

  • @MaximPodolsky

i dont know the last time you went to college, but in the modern age you can't just sit in a local college and survey a course without being enrolled. It's called insurance. If something happens to you while your in that class they cant afford to take care of you.

  • @pimpmastabola In five years as an undergrad not once did anyone ask me for my ID. And I don't know what you mean by "modern age" but I graduated last year. Alright I admit it was in Canada, maybe they take attendance in the US but I have some serious reasons to doubt it, with 500+ students in some of the most popular classes. Now, I did NOT say that you can OFFICIALLY just come to a lecture and sit there without paying, but you CAN do it, officialy or not.

  • A lesson in captivating communication to be certain.

  • Fantastic introduction! I've come to respect him and his logic, as well as his humor. He's really there for the success of the students, and the prosperity of everyone as a whole.

  • Oh my god I thought I had had good teachers before I watched this lecture and now my mind is utterly blown. MIT rocks so hard.

  • best lecturer ever. period.

  • hahaha yes... no,.. hell no !!( that last one was mine lmao)

  • iff anyone knows where i can learn unit conversation easily and moles and volume and mass to learn online comment or msg back need help im in chem 11

  • Hello from El Salvador. Is chemistry the career path to choose if i want to work making research on photovoltaic solar cells?

Please help me im between electrical engineering and chemistry.

  • @Alexsuper15 electrical engineering, mechanical engineering (or materials science), and chemistry will all qualify you; work and research experience is a more deciding factor on what career path you go down

  • @chj2100

I apreciate your answer. ill go for physics its the base of all and when i comes to semiconductors you need chemistry and physics so i think is a good option. Thanks again for the answer, is hard this days to find good people willing to give some information.

  • @Alexsuper15 Hi Alex, I have studied electrical and electronic engineering in Manchester, UK. I would recommend you choose chemistry if you want to research solar cells as in its core is an electrochemical system. However, all sciences are linked. You will come across physics and electronics while developing solar cells. A broader understanding is required. Good luck!

  • @FearTriX Hello, thanks for your answer but i think i enjoy more physics so maybe a electrical engineering with a Phd in semicondcutors devices.

  • I'm never going to see the inside of that classroom myself.....

  • @pbtwentythree never say never.

  • Great professor.

  • the subtittles are crazy.

  • Jeff Goldblum could play this guy

  • @tarrded

    Ha so true

  • One of the Best Professors @ MIT, + Walter Lewin

  • Isn't there a health and safety issue here?

  • America is now short of quality native American lectures!so no choice you have to import Chinese products like they used to be!sorry i'm not racist!

  • Learning chemistry from Robert Mitchum of film noir fame. Its like you feel like you better learn.

  • chemistry like this

  • im in 11grade i want to got to a college like this. it seems way better.

  • @PSSGoA5k4t3 lol its mit!!!1

  • Wonderful prof!!!! most wonder....

  • As an experimental Solid state Physicist its nice to see the subject tought from a Chemistry perspective. On a number of occasions I've worked with Chemists in the field and its staggering the differences in methods and thinking between an experimental physicist and a chemist... Though theoretical solid state physicists are an even tougher too converse productively with.

  • The lecturer is awesome. I love the format on youtube with the transcript and all but I wish his bulletpoints had a better layout!

Still I like to learn MIT courses for free on youtube!!

  • i really appreciate this free high quality education from MIT. thanks!!!!

  • i wish i would have followed through for MIT :((

  • why won't the playlist play in order for me?

ahh... whatever, i think i can handle clicking on the next video every time.

  • Look after the customer, and the business will take care of itself. same thing applies to education.. that's why this guy makes moves

  • wow. only a genius professer at mit would bring shakespeare into chemistry.

  • bond, james bond.

  • really interesting subject

  • you'll probably end up watching just 1 video. just go back and read the lecture from your own professor, it'll probably do you more good.

  • He looks like he's a great professor.

  • Finally a professor that gives a damn. You can tell by how he talks and dresses. I am sick of all these damn teachers that dress in jeans and shit.

  • wow he supports re-dos on tests..

  • This is the sort of prof that anyone who WANTS to learn--or who has a real interest in the material--will appreciate.

  • If he hadn't spoken English I would have think that he is a Soviet professor that came to our time from 60-ies by time machine :-))))

  • old school you bet, he called the seeking bar a "vernier" hehehe :)

  • this guy says if we were to leave ont knowledge to our future it would be the knowing that all things are made of atoms

  • Is this course for under graduates Or graduate level?

  • I like this guy. I wish I had professors like him in my college.

  • I love the way he sounds a bit like Jeff Goldblum

  • This guy has an old school feel to him. I like that.

  • Thanks Ward Cleaver! lol

  • he looks kinda like the g man

  • pa pa paparazti

  • of course mit gets to upload long videos

  • yee reppin' Canada!

  • good

  • AL ADMINISTRADOR tendran alguna catedraen en idioma español? les agradeceria su respuesta.

  • I can DO ANYTHING I want, I am the professor. Epic quote, but a dangerous one

  • i wish i had this stuff when i was in high school 10 years ago.. we had no wiki or youtube.. we had to deal with crumby AOL.. it offered nothing but dumb sound waves which even took a while to transfer.. How times have changed

  • Also, Professor Sadoway reminds me of Kramer from Seinfeld xD

  • MIT is really doing us, the high schoolers, a service by creating OCW. Not only do we learn, but we get to see how the classes are taught. This is the second best thing to going to MIT and visiting some classes. This is an opportunity found nowhere else.

  • yeah ur right, yale does it too with other stuff and with better quality video but shame they don't allow comments

  • This looks like a very cool course, damn i´ll take it

  • I learned to emulate may foreign accents over the years from my physics, EE and chemistry classes. Good way to learn dialects besides the subject matter :)

  • He's great! Those videolectures helped me a lot with some pre-medical topics.

    / Michael, Sweden

  • I wonder if Shakira likes chemistry? I could just see her sitting in the front row..

  • where

  • When I did my Masters there was just me by the end of it. :o)

  • I'm in high school right now. Just thinking about how I have to do this in the future makes me scared.

  • Go for it, don't get scared.

You can't beat having a good teacher like him.

  • you have him? i want to go to mit some day

  • No. I wish I qualified, 20 years ago...

You better study hard and have a good foundations on math and English. When you get there, MIT, be serious and never cheat. Best wishes.

  • It could be A LOT worse.

  • so true. there are some ridiculously awful lecturers :(

  • Yes. If someone is *really* interested then they'll always self-teach themselves anyway. The only decent thing about university is that you get access to labs and equipment - and get to know some knowledgeable persons. Lectures are total crap, however.

  • Agreed... however, I looked into it and the prohibitive costs of college far exceeds the cost of test tubes, even that machine that takes infra red scans of chemicals, analytical balances, etc. Indeed, it would be nice to be able to go somewhere to interact with "professors", people who actually do chemistry or whatever it is for a living... there needs to be a University based on the sudbury school model.

  • your right my chemistry teacher had a thick accent i had to teach myself with the book. I got a B in the class.. i never self taught myself in my life. It was hell. However i got use to his accent in the end and didnt have to read the book XD.

  • I have a chinese dude who teaches me quantum chemistry, and his english is kinda crap : @ seriously before they can teach they need to improve their english

  • @nriab23

Then get a (proper) English speaking Quantum chemist

  • @nriab23 if you don't follow him then you are too stupid and shouldn't be in college. go pump gas, I can understand my maths and physics and I have ppl who don't know czech teaching the courses. I follow perfectly

  • @slovakmath Hey why don't you pump your dick up his ass, you fucking cocksucker.... Yeah and I'll pump gas, all over your fecking face and then light it.

  • im confused a bit, self-teaching is a good thing but prof's. will tell where are you wrong and right, and you will the papers of a degree, the only bad thing you get grades...

still i want to study in MIT.

    Vadim from Russia

  • ohh god damn it, sorry for the mistakes, i was thinking what to write not how to write XD

  • thax alot

  • This is a top notch instructor.

  • @radbcc Lester C. Thorow, Dean, Sloan School of Mgmt., MIT -- is a member of the Trilateral Commission and knows 33rd degree secret is the 1899 Alaska Earthquake - British Association record No. 333, at Shide. Isle of Wight on September 3 at three o' three.

  • @radbcc he is good indeed

  • so preety much instead of spending thousands of doallrs i can get free education.

  • Yeah, but you'll need to print out your own degree certificate. :o)

  • 26 years=)

  • It's MIT why is he baby sitting these students. I think he's good though.

  • Is dis a 1st semister chem class

  • yo 3091 rocks \\m//

  • 3.091

  • Yeah, G-chem !!

I-chem is even better, o-chem and p-chem are tough though, would;ve done better if I didn't have to take so many other courses...

  • I love this guy.

  • I "will" rather go to stanford.

Wow. You sound SO intelligent. I'm sure you got in with that grammar. Haha.

  • Judging from the size and age of the class "3091" in MIT language is another way of saying General Chemistry 1A at most other schools. Never liked chem. Liked math enough to major in it, but I got a C in this class.

  • I really appreciate for MIT to provide lectures of Chemistry and Biology,,, i am a pharmaceutical Engineering student at University, these lectures are help me very much...

once i say big thank you for all of MIT staffs and professors.

    Santos

  • @Inacio19082008 Santos, try 'The Mechanical Universe' video tapes on Physics if you need.it. They are on the Annanberg CPB project on the web site

  • I have a crush.

  • why am I watching the syllabus of a class I don't take?

  • Comment removed

  • MIT(Massachusetts institute of technology) is one of the world's most prestigious universities. Its like people die to go there .

I'm also planning to go there once I graduate.

Im only in 7th grade right now but planning to skip some grades since I did outstanding job at SAT's provided by Duke TIP. My GPA is 4.9 so I'm not bragging but I'm planning to go there.

  • It's still an aluminum can.

  • is that what you think his point was?

  • i really didn't get past that point because that was rediculous. i can take that aluminum can to the recycling place and get money for it because it's an aluminum can. he said it's not an aluminum can. You know what they call people like that at the aluminum can place?

  • If I were a professor I'd be super awesome and cool.

  • are all MIT professors like this one?

  • nope, majority have an accent and some are very hard to understand.

they even have a few nobel prize winning professors.

  • SAH DOH WAY

  • Some more names to add to the list of Master Teachers: Richard Muller at Berkeley, Walter Lewin at MIT. And there are many, many, more! These people absolutely amaze me. It's one thing to understand a subject thoroughly, but to be able to communicate it clearly, and be enthusiastic and excited on top of it? -They are my Gods, I worship them!

  • @LoveMattersMost I have to add David Goodstein@ Caltech, He is a Physicist

  • @vk92007 Oh yes! I have a copy of his "Mechanical Universe." Brilliant! Brian.

  • This man is a Master Teacher! This is what learning and education are all about. It can be any subject or major, but Master Teachers have certain common characteristics. Look at YouTube Videos for Richard Feynman at Caltech, Stephen Gould at Harvard, Alex Fillipenko at Berkeley, etc. These Guys/Gals Rock! Brian B. student, San Jose State Univ.

  • yeah, cause I would of thought he was more like a fucking prick.

  • um yeah i didn't get the lecture notes.... can some one please send em to me.... thanks:)

  • I have no idea what this is about, but I'm going to listen to this..

  • hehe, gman from half life 2
