What memories. I was a projectionist at a drive-in, my dad was a projectionist there before me. People sneaking in the exit or in the trunk. Pop corn and hot dogs you could smell for a mile, 15 cents for a box of popcorn. Broken film, horns blowing. Pouring rain. Shining flashlights at the screen. On a blanket with naked girls...
The Bellwood Flea Market, located at Willis Road and Jeff Davis Hwy / US-1 in Chesterfield County, Virginia used to be the Bellwood Drive-In Movie theatre back in its time. Long, before my time (b1971)
In these days where many people insist on using their phones during the movie, these drive-ins need to make a comeback. I know there are several still around, but not enough.
I miss the nasty drive-in in Georgetown, MA circa 1975...........it was off the highway, way back in the woods and it was soooooooo creepy, but forbidden fun!
usually when the projector screwed up it was because the projectionist was drunk/high/sleeping or screwing his girlfriend! Usually everyone blew their horn until he got the picture back on.
According to Wikipedia, the owner, Richard Hollingshead Jr, lived in Camden. Back then, much of New Jersey was farmland, so he probably got the land cheap. It was only in business for 3 years, but look at what it spawned!
