Whatever about AB and ST. People wanted to hear the same thing they heard at the roller rink or disco, live. It was about the show and the funk. Not about the musicians and their tech-nality.
I never saw the point of having acts set up their instruments on stage, only to have them lip-synching during the performance?! Just go ahead and play the song live! That used to bug me about both "American Bandstand" and "Soul Train".
@jonthom11702 - To me, Y have a group lip-sync.? Just play the recording. Same thing. I can hear the song at home so Y waste time to see someone lip-sync a song. Just play the tune on the ole stereo.. No Difference, to me anyways.. My Opinion.. Thanx for the info tho!!
Nearly every artist Lip-Synced on the American Bandstand. Instruments were "dead" as well. All playing along to the recording.. If I had a show as this, there would be no lip-sync'ing allowed. You sing, and play the instruments as well or you don't perform on the show... I know these Guys (Gap Band) could do it, play & sing Live.. I kind of wonder if Dick Clark had this thing about not allowing artist to perform live on his shows...
@DallasPix Most of the artists lip-synced on Soul Train as well, although to that show's credit there were some live performances. Both Dick Clark and Don Cornelius have said that logistically it was too costly and time consuming to have live performances every week.
Sadly, Robert Wilson died of a heart attack at his home in Palmdale, California on August 15, 2010... This group had some 'kickin' songs!! The song ."Outstanding" alone remains one of the most sampled songs in history and has, astonishingly, been used by over 150 artists. <-- From Wikipedia...
And what's up with this IDIOT director keeping the LENS on the "pop" dancer in green! They show this damn guy more than they do Charlie, Robert and Ronnie!
How about they made ALL Oklahomans proud and NOT just the Black people. I'm NOT from Oklahoma but my grandparents were and I LIVED in Oklahoma for 4 years during college in the 70's and 80's!
I think one aspect about this group is that those of us who had the opportunity to hear them play and perfect their skills playing around Tulsa back in the day.Sock hops and such. I was one who had that opportunty. Robert and Boony was cool with me.too.
When my dad passed away this year one of the original members of the gap attended his service. My dad was one of Tulsa best bass players and the first to play the electric bass in Tulsa. Gem enjoyed Robert Wilson and I love the GAP band and proud they are from T Town! My dad was friends with Leon and knew of the guys when they started. And I'm Caucasian music brings us all together as brothers and sisters. Amen and god bless the Wilson family
Bassman Robert Wilson died today age 53. The Gap Band made black Oklahomans like me proud to see these Tulsa men make it to the big time. Condolences to the brothers Charlie and Ronnie and to the entire Wilson family.

The Gap Band were the coolest cats on the planet "Don't miss that train!", and Dick Clark is a legend, but Don was in charge of the hippest trip in America! How much bigger does it get than that???
Shoot...I remember watching that on American Bandstand :)

Say what you wanna say compare Dick Clark to Don Cornelius. Don was smooth but Dick had real personality.
