If there is a boycott on disney products, its just going to make to make things worse in the short term - no one will be employed which means that those with jobs at disney now and are struggling and not successfully feeding themselves and children. the haitian 'economy' would collapse further. If anything keep buying disney - its still a job for the people of haiti.
Im haitian, people here in america dont know what poor is. haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. People that are business men look at this and say " this is business and not personal" I say bullshit. I just dont understand how people could look at this and say oh well. Disney is a muti- billion corp and try to tell me you cant pay a decent wage. RIch get Richer and the Poor slouch over and die. Modern Day Slavery
But it is only a matter of time till the job loss to the 3rd world drops our value as workers, too. With competition for each job up, the price of labor drops. Imagine a US where most of us live like this, and a privileged minority uses us as slaves. Their plight is our plight. It is in our interest to make sure foreign contractors pay good wages wherever they operate.
And who's gonna buy their products when 70-90% of the population is either unemployed or working for slave wages? Even Henry Ford was smart enough to raise his workers' wages enough for them to be able to afford his cars. Now everybody's adopted the WalMart principle.
i fucking hate this free market bullshit. it's such a farse.
there are very few jobs in haiti, just like there is no clean water to drink, no wood to burn for fuel, and no crops being grown locally (all imports). it's either work for slave wages or be even worse off. no one probably put a gun to these workers heads and forced them to work there, since the labor pool is so big. but if they have no other job opportunities, and they want to not starve, how big of a conscious choice is that?
@otacon451 You mean LIBERAL policies have turned nations into ghettos. Marxist dictators turned Haiti and every other country they ever got their socialist hands on into bankrupt shitholes. Now Barry Osamao's doing the same thing to America.
(continued):impoverished on purpose in order to reap the benefits of unskilled labor and natural resources. This is the system we've created- a system of profit. Profit doesn't know morals, unions, or human rights. Profit knows the bottom line and share holder's interests.
Take action and do something; don't let this knowledge demoralize you. Get involved in activist work and protests and community struggles. This is not how the world has to be if we fight back!
ah, good ol capitalism at work. Yes these conditions are not abnormal in other countries, Haiti is just in the worse shape of all of them in the Western hemisphere thanks to the debt imposed by the French during the 20 century and the two US coups under Bush senior and Bush junior that destroyed any economic development in the country (in addition to increased privatization and IMF/World Bank regulations). The US and other imperialist countries keep Haiti and the rest of the third world
PSA here, though: Disney is FAR from the only company that has terrible labor practices. Lemme break it down for you. It is much much cheaper to use foreign contractors to manufacture goods that require unskilled labor. As human rights and labor rights and the standard of living go up, so do the demands of workers for better conditions and wages, which drives up the cost.
Disney does not run this factory, but contracts their work out with a third party, and they own nothing but only the finished goods so it is very easy to pack up and go when worker demands get too high. Thus, you are always fighting an uphill battle against corporate manufacturer's need to keep prices as low as possible. So if you don't buy a Disney shirt, but opt for a Levi shirt, you are endorsing the same practices. Research fair labor practices and where to get goods made by union workers.

sorry to disappoint, but Walt was as evil as any of the executives who work there today. He would absolutely approve of the labor practices because he built the company on screwing other people over. And you can't overlook his antisemitism. Do some research.
Honestly I've heard this same stuff about him being a Corporatist Bastard and an Antisemite, but Ive heard it from websites that dont exactly have a reputation for being reputable. So until I get real evidence, I'm not believing it
Makes me profoundly sad to see that this is what my family came from and there are still so many of us left there.

@DarrelfromZeeland neoliberal policies have turned nations into ghettos, allowing capital flight but not human flight.
