Aw man, I was sooooo into this. It was something I hadn't heard before. Then he went into Norwegian Wood. I wish he didn't ALWAYS do that. He ALWAYS goes into Norwegian Wood or Amazing Grace or something. I mean, I LOVE Victor and he's one of my favorites but it'd be nice if he didn't always do those.
I love how this is so real. Set up right near a beautiful waterfall on a warm sunny day. With my favorite bassist sitting right at the bottom, making beauty with the hands we all have. He's merely showing you what your hands can do. That's heaven in my eyes. :D
people have you noticed that the start of his double thumbing tecnique is not notes, its just a thumping sound and on that point if you are going to have such a versitile and such an advanced tecnique you have to make music out of it becaues thats what relates to bass players of the world to be so inspired by victor
Man, Its a sad day for bassists. I wuz gonna post something like "I Love Vic" or "this guy inspires me every time"
But you guys are on this forum thingy fighting and arguing! I don't wanna post here. Thats not why vic plays. Don't play bass to plant seeds of discord. Play for the world
Everyones method is right in their minds. Take what you like and continue on your way. Please guys, what r you doin? Just go play and have fun with it. Thats all. Im done.
rock on.. i play bass, i enjoy playing bass and i'm keeping the flame alive to pass on.. the thing that is starting to intreague me is that .......... some pianist can play any tune they have heard, so the day will come where a bass playing musician can play anything that comes to mind, and vic amongst others is a vital catalist for this to happen and i can't wait for that day to come as soon as poss. Bass is the sound of the future.
Let me ask you this. Do you make up new words when you are trying to say something new? I don't think so. I have played every note on the neck of my bass. I am forced to replay some of them every time I play. I am also forced to use the techniques I already know. Your definition of "free style" is impossible. "Free Style" is just that. You play what you feel. Period.
There are alot of great bass players that do that. I don't blame them, they are monsters. They have made so many records its like when I play a jaco lick over and over, they jsut play thier own stuff over and over...
Consider "freestyle" as it applies to any art form: music, visual art, lyricism. You are obliged to use some sort of language that has been established by your predecessors, and yourself. Sure, Vistor has played these phrases before, but they have meaning now: he's speaking his language. Attempt to rap "freestyle" without using an established language. You will get strange looks.
He is improvising. If you have ever heard any of his recordings you would never use the words "yukulele sound" he has numerous awards and is without a doubt "The Best!!"
Wooten has won the "Bass Player of the Year" award from Bass Player Magazine three times in a row, and was the first person to win the award more than once.
jazz is about mistakes, all art came from mistakes. some people make great mistakes. you are a hater and jealous it seems. victor is always evolving i have been watching him since 1990. i can honestly tell you he gets better and better every time. a tru artist.
stick to your I-V samba lines basswings...if you had one thousandth the talent of victor wooten you would be in a band and not playing along to your casio...
in bass the are schools ...and i don t like this way ...some people call him a god let him be for them ...i m with a band man and i learn every thing by my self ...auto ......and i respect this artist and every man playing bass ..just i don t i like ...for me the are many many best players of jaco(the genius) ;jeff berlin ;richard bona;marcus...like this kind of players ..
that is fine if you dont like victor's playing, but you dont need to go on a public forum and disrespect him as a musician. you are a good player, but not good enough to criticize victor wooten. and even jaco had his bag of tricks...(do you think its a coincidence that vic always plays norwegian wood?)
he's umm...does alot of working out...he's a wearing a really baggy shirt...so it looks like he's fat the man is really strong..I met him three times and then challenged him to a arm wrestling match each time lol...I won once. and I think thats just cause he let me lol.
im one of the fattest bassists myself ( overweight) , so who cares about weight? u ever heard of bill dickens or chris chew? they are bigger then me they are amazing.
Victor got his shirt dirty at his Bass/Nature camp so he changed it and I saw under his hirt and that's not fat it's a six pack and some massive pecks.
listen man, i love dominique , but playing with a thumb pick, is NOT the real sound of bass so check yourself b4 u talk smack about victa. your comments are making you sound like a puke a lele btw.
This clip is actually the tail end of a 20-minute jam he opened the workshop with. So the lame opening solo you're referring to is really 13 minutes into the jam.
victor's amazing...but that was a lame opening solo, i dont like it when people do double thumb and slap solos and dont use any notes. im surprised victor did that of all people.
He's my hero!!! I don't even play bass either! I just love to watch this guy play. A true Mr Music Man

not in the beginning, but if you listened to more than the first 30 seconds, than you'll hear kinda jacoish jazzlines.
