OUTSTANDING!!!! The drums are perfectly tuned. My grandson will be studing your technical style, by the way he is only 9. He is taking lessons to learn the importance of reading. Thanks again.
Kickin job ! Take look at at my video and see what muscle memory will do after a 25 year break. But after watching your video it's clear I've got a whole lot of work to do to get my chops back :)
very nice, very impressive (redundant comments, but still)...your drum students are extremely lucky to have you as an instructor. hopefully a few of them will play drums long enough realize how extremely lucky they are.
@drummerdudeandy thank you very much and to answer your question, the snare is a Mapex 'Black Panther' with 24 karat gold hoops/hardware and black brass shell, although the Sonor matching white birch snare sounds great as you say this snare records and plays so well.
@StraightNoChaser86 It's basically a displaced open roll but the notes it's played over are a bit tricky to break down, give me a couple of days and I'll write it out and send it to your inbox.
Thanks for the comment and I'm glad you liked the vid
Thanks for your comment and no I'm not in a big band at the moment but I've been pro since the age of 16 and served my apprenticeship if you like in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra so musically I 'teethed' on this stuff so to speak.
Thanks and yes the snare is a Black Panther black brass shell with 24 karat gold hoops, looks lovely but does dent after a few months of rimshots but still my my favourite snare drum.
And I was tired of hearing the same old "superspeed" version of "Give It One" as performed by MF and others, so I'm happy to hear the original again and great drumming dude.
No, Randy Jones is lurking beneath my drum mix I did however transcribe and play the first two solos pretty much note for note (I think) and if you listen carefully you'll hear the original mix bleeding through.
Hey you've already got a years headstart on me, I was 14 when I started playing drums, keep practicing and more important keep loving the instrument, that's all it takes really.
Well, lively I suppose but not as insane as it may seem, I saw MF play it it live at a concert once and that was almost the limit (I thought) but check out the one in my favourites, actually I think it's too fast but a young Peter Erskine really holds it together, not insane but unimaginable.
Thanks for both your comments and I'm glad you enjoyed the vids
[scuse my english, I'm french]. Great !!! I like your job on the "normal tempo, here is really impressive too. As say "leglobishfcbg" this faster tempo cover sound well even if it strange to hear dubba-C for high A (I think you speed up the record with a tape machine not a computer program). "Give it one" seams to be one of your favourite tunes, I see you make your students work it (the young child who plays it on ther other clip would become a great drummer with a teacher like you).
Well thank you and thanks too on behalf of Craig (the student on Give it One).
Yes I've loved that track ever since I bought MF Horn 2 circa 1970, then I saw Maynard play it much faster i 1980 so decided to increase the speed and then play along for the buzz and it truly was great to play at that speed.
Sorry about the pitch but short of hiring 23 musicians to do it for real this was the only way I could do it.
The only problem is don't think it can be saved at that speed and my laptop doesn't have enough output to get a decent mix on the desk, anyway I used Steinberg 'Clean' software and to be really honest I wasn't even thinking about the pitch change, I just wanted to play to it at a quicker speed.
Thanks I'll look into that although since you made me aware of that I realised that I could've recorded from line out to minidisc as well, anyway thanks for the tips.
Martin-I got to see an earlier version of your performance on this. As before, I got to see Maynard 7 times or so in concert-you absolutely NAILED this-terrific job! In fact, I like to show this video to my 12-year-old son so he can get a better idea of how complex good drumming can be.
this is awsome. Maynard was one of my favorite musicians, and I'm interested in learning drums/percussion. Can you recommend any of the DVD tutorials I see out there?
It really depends on what you want to learn, I think a good alround and practical dvd is Greg bissonette's on big band phrasing but if it's technique you are looking for there are so many and they are all good, Moeller stroke for instance i'd suggest anyting by Jojo Meyer although at the end of the day 1 to 1 drum lessons from a good teacher are still worth the cost.
