Here's the truth. Greed, or the profit motive, is the motivation for experts in a field, working for competitive companies in a free market, to search for innovative ways to give the customer exactly what he wants, better quality, faster, affordability, more productivity and technological breakthroughs. When refrigerators and cell phones first came out, they were cost prohibitive. Now the average poor family in the US has them. Standard of living increases aids the poor more than anyone else.
“No drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we're looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn't test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power.” P. J. O'Rourke quotes (American political commentator,Journalist, Writer and Humorist, b.1947)
Greed DOES capture the "evolutionary spirit". Everytime you want more, and especially in a situation where there is no limit to "more", then you are being greedy.
Because they're NOTHING but job providing and goods and service making machines. It's a bad idea putting leaches on your work horse. That fat-cat CEO does not pay corporate taxes, he pays personal income taxes. Corporate taxes merely reduce R&D moneys that could go into finding out how to provide a product better and cheaper for everyone (especially the poor). It also kills jobs, raises, bonuses and company expansion and increases prices.
@LucisFerre1 Corporations destroy small businesses that are rooted in local communities. The bottom line of a modern day corporation is to maximise profit for the shareholder. The majority of the jobs that these corporations create are in China and in turn the import of these goods undermines our home economy.
@terrapyn99, When governments place a tariff on foreign cars, say, that creates a shortage, and increases prices. That creates a greater demand for domestic cars, which creates a shortage and increases prices. You have higher prices for imports AND domestic cars, which decreases the overall market for new car sales. So what you're talking about is largely an ILLUSION. GM will have a larger percentage of DECREASING market, a "bigger" slice of a smaller pizza. See OMP's buggywhip speech.
@terrapyn99 said [[Corporations destroy small businesses that are rooted in local communities. ]]
That's like saying that TV destroys poker games. Wrong. Many people would PREFER to watch TV rather than play poker. If people cared about that small business, then that small business wouldn't lose market share. Small companies lose market share because that local community DOESN'T CARE. However, that small company could fill a niche market that Wal-Mart doesn't if it wants to survive.
@terrapyn99 said [[This speech is the mantra of the banksters and tax dodging corporations that rule our country.]]
Tax dodging? When you file your income taxes, you take the standard deduction and personal exemption, right? Maybe you itemize on your 1040? (Probably not). Well, who decides what deductions are are rightfully due? The IRS. Yet when a corp takes deductions that the IRS said they are due, you call it criminal and cheating. Are you a cheating criminal for taking YOUR deductions?
@gasto5 But where does that ambition come from? Doesn't it typically originate from a desire for money, power, or some type of end? The capitalist economy is centered around greed. And hes right! It does work! Look at the economies in Europe In the Middle Ages and you won't see very much greed. I mean guilds with uniform prices and the threat of exile or death for the crime of being greedy pretty much eliminates ambition.
@gasto5 haha im sorry, i didn't realize how off topic i got. My point was essentially that greed and ambition stem from the same place, and its usually tough to separate them. You call it the difference between rape and consensual sex, but i think you're holding them too far apart. Greed is just an excessive amount of ambition is it not? Rape is wrong, but greed is expected in a capitalist economy.
@rahl182 I agree it worked, but it was cruel and unnecessary. And yes, greed is an excess of ambition, where principles are long time forgotten. It's difficult if not impossible to justify that.
@gasto5 said [[I love the play of words he makes in this mediocre speech. Greed is not the same as ambition, just like rape is not the same as consenting sex.]]
He did say, 'for lack of a better word'. Granted, it was a sorry speech IMO. I really don't think the intent of the movie was to sell capitalism to a skeptical and largely ignorant movie goer.
The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you very much

Greed is a word that describes only the never ending desire for more money.
Sure it can be used metaphorically in other context, like greed for love or knowledge, but it is irrelevant. You can't have greed for love or knowledge at the same time with greed for money. Greed for money means that you'd sell your own mother and certainly not spend a penny for knowledge just for knowledge.
Greed is never good, it's what slows the upward surge of mankind.
