@railrdr523 The control frequency on this model was too slow so the gyros couldn't correct fast enough, and I overcorrected. My later version had a faster update frequency and was much more stable.
have you thought about setting the motors up so that they respond to feedback via sensors which detect tilt, accelleration, etc? Set it to hover, let the microcontroller decide what the individual motor speeds will be, go left or right and the MC decides how that will happen based on how severe the order to the side would be.
Thanks, I'm using a regular 72mhz FM transmitter with 12 channels but you could use a 9 channel. I used mostly off the self radio control aircraft and some robot control for the machine in this video. Now, the electronics are Berg 4L receiver, gyros from Sparkfun, Coridium Corp. microcontroller, Devantech servo controller, and some other off the shelf controls. Check out my other videos and my site vertiplane(dot)com.
I've thought about these, what about if you aimed each motor inwards (towards the center of the craft) to perhaps help stop it from drifting about. Also a lower center of gravity would be beneficial methinks.
I did make exactly those changes for the reasons you explained, and it did help some. I am still tweaking the design, although I am not sure this platform can be made as stable as I would like. Check out my other video and my website for the latest info (look above in the info section below my user name.)
This looks like a classical Quadrotor to me (see Wikipedia), i.e. manoevering with the change of each rotors rpm. AT least in the video, no tilting of props can be seen.
There is little or no tilting of the motors in this video. Check out my other video to see the motors tilt. This is just an aluminum test rig to figure out the hovering. I won't be doing any transitioning with this test rig, even though the motors can tilt. Transition will take place when I get the fiberglass wings and fuselage finished. That should be around April 07. Google or Yahoo "Vertiplane Quad Tiltrotor" to see my site (since apparently you can put it here, or your comments won't show.)
Thanks for the comment. It actually does have gyros on all 3 axis. Most of the wobble is from my over compensation and lack of control authority from the configuration and software. Check out my other video for the latest flight or go to www.vertiplane.com. I will continue to improve the design. A scale model that will fly like a conventional airplane with props tilted forward is next. Stay tuned!
Cool VTOL, if you were ever to attempt to make some sorta auto-stabilization thing for it you could possibly, although it would probably be to much trouble to do, make one with the accelerometer thing from a Wii or PS3 controller for less than some other source. An impractical idea maybe but it would be neat if it were done.

Just asking.
