  • Evergreen song

  • wow what a song

  • memories of my childhood....

  • The peak of raja at an era when he defined music to masses without the need to know about any thing complex as classic/carnatic or classic/mozart. Listen from 2:31. He brought these into popular music and made them a hit too without the need to understand any basics of carnatic or western classic.

  • Aaahhhh...those were the days.

  • ஹம்சநாத ராகத்தில் அமைந்த அம்சமான பாடல்.

  • @rambayt paadal hamsam thaan anaal video sucks..yuck..

  • @anjaliveer You are probably correct. It can be explained in 2 ways. 1) Ilayaraja was far too ahead of his times. He still is.

    2) choreography/videography was not that developed. Today, even the local marriage videographers use better graphics and techniques.

  • ilayaraja 166 songs 1 cd audio songs new cd imported rec pls call patel at 8695693152 hurry to book ur order today .

  • yes rightly said but it could be said about each language and songs. as north Indians those who don't know miss this in the same way tamilians who don't listen to classics of Hindi songs miss many. can they ever replace the ghazels of jagjit singh or pankaj udhas. their couplet and those poetry Tamil cant match., is there a genre such as ghazal in Tamil?

so be objective in yr assessment.

  • Recently, the same magazine re-published review of "POO VILANGU", which has got the famous Raja's song of "Aathadi pavada..." and " Kannil Etho.." But, not even a single word about the music in the review.

  • mike mohan evvlo lucky..many of the great melodies of maestro were in his movies..mike mandayyan..

  • lovely

  • One of the fanous tamil weekly magazine recently re-published their review about the 'Annakili' film (Raja's first). When the whole tamilnadu was mesmorised with the songs, these fellows not even talked a single word about the music of the film. How cruel these fellows and how many hurdles raja would have faced. Raja, nobody is there to beat you.

  • Thendral vandhu ennai thodum... appa jayashree edhukku da mike mandaya

  • good thought

  • For certain people, God should give special permission that they should live permnanently and always young. Example, Sivaji Ganesan etc., That permission should be given to Director Sridhar also. Great Director. May his soul rest in peace!!!

  • @nawabshaukat I am moved by your comment!

  • Dear Nawab,

I am excited to know that our Tamil king Ilayaraja has fans from Pakistan.

You should be having a great taste for music I guess. In Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states, we used to think how much good things are missed by hindi, gujrathi and all the other Indians, who do not listen to Tamil songs.

You are a great exception from the neighbouring country. My name is Karthik, living in Sydney

  • @utkart

absolutely rite , karthik ...northiees really missin our RAJA..

  • @nawabshaukat

PLS LISTEN HOW TO NAME IT AND NOTHING BUT WIND ....

  • @nawabshaukat : Fantastic to know that there are fans across the border of the great illayaraja..True music knows no boundaries..Nusrat fateh ali khan is very famous in India..

Illayaraja made Carnatic music cool and acceptable to masses who didn't earlier have interest in it..The man is an absolute genius

  • Jesudas....our Ganagandharvan....Rocks....and raja sir....also

  • my fave raja song ever...how i wish this song had the sound quality of present day songs or even ARR songs...sadly technology was not that gr8...still sounds heavenly..kudos to raja sir! he is a genius...and yesudas is class!!

  • awesome song!!!! raja rockzzzzz!!!

  • one of the best song of raja and kj

  • mike mohan..hahahaha...many of his movies are hit coz of the maestro's magic....nice song btw..

  • God salute to IR!

  • SIMPLY SENSATIONAL - the piano opening in this song. There will never be anything like this again. The music, the guy whom conposed it and the guy whom made it happen on screen.

  • @vensub

    haaaa..haaaaaa...u r a well educated joker..btw i like ur english..i really appreciate that.

  • At least you understood me somehow, stamping my back as if I am some kind of a joker, while many others dont even have an inquisitive dilemma about the right to hear the right music vs. the one that is jamming their ears for a long time.

Next time, even if it is a joke, can you reply correctly to the apt thread, so that the right one will get notified with your comments?

    Thanks for your admiration.

  • @vensub - seems like u r quite an exponent in classical music... dont u still think this song quite nice to your ears... Notwithstanding its compatibility with classical music, its pleasant to hear.

I like the fact some of ur favorite songs in ur profile like swarnachamaram and thaliritta kinakkal are my favorites too :)

And i am one ignoramus when it comes to pure classical though i know some basics :P

  • @makri8765 I agree with you. I am a big classical music fan (Carnatic and Hindustani) but also happen to like many film songs, folk songs etc. They are all different genres and can be enjoyed separately. They are also interrelated. Classical forms provide the foundations and Music directors innovate blend etc. to make it popular with the general public. This song for example is based on related ragas Hamsanadam /Sarangatarangini . Music Directors have to do it to fit lyrics and film theme etc.

  • @marfaned - I am a huge classic rock fan... I adore Led Zeppelin and all those classic rock bands... But i still love malayalam, tamil and hindi songs... provided they are nice to hear.. like this song.. and many from ilayaraja... it is prejudice which essentially makes some ppl to refuse to accept something as good despite it being good.

  • Shut up vensub.. go and prove urself instead making noise..the number of comments u wrote clearly say that u r mentally upset. Get well soon!!

  • @isaikalaignan, don't shut up! Your ID is funny.

Please get upset, so that I will get your conscience back, correct you somehow.

I know youre trying to be sarcastic, attacking personally to prove yourself!

It appears that you have been knocked down by a plethora of noise conundrum, you wont even identify anything but something cacophonic.

When you cant be silent, it's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt, also known as noise : - ).

  • the starting 'veena' is great ..

  • I am sure it is not veena... but some other instrument.

  • starts off with electric piano followed by guitar..

  • The songs were awesome! The movie was good for an 80's movie! Illayaraja is the best!

  • @vensub ..wt ever f### it is raga, thala, swara ,sangathi ..software ,hardware .....its raaja s

    magic...

  • True, It is a m#### in your language magic... as of now!

  • awesome good!!! super!!!

  • Another great creation of IR. Genius person and god gift .

  • Lot of people analyze raaga of IR songs. Analysis of the notes doesn't explain his brilliance just like how analyzing the origin of each of the words of a great novel doesn't explain its greatness. The raagas and notes are all there for everyone. But how many can compose like the Great Maestro! Analysis is futile. Just appreciate the genius' ability to attune to emotions and deliver such divine music. Truly divine!

  • wonderfull voice of Yesudas

  • Excellent composition.. no one has ever done similar to it

  • KILLING ME SOFTLY WITH YOUR RENDITION-KJY-Amazing voice and talent.thankyou

  • All the songs in this movie was superb. Mohan at his peak..and Jeyashree..subtle actress...acted in only a few movies.

  • i listened to this song nearly 20 times now...still i cant stop listening to it....just cant explain the gr8 feel it brings in my mind...superb!!!!

  • According to the guitarist (and an accomplished veena player) Sada (Mr. Sadanand), this song got approved by Lata Mangeshkar - she was presrent during the recording. Upon her nod of approval, Raja sir approved it. What respect for a fellow musician and senior artist like Lata Mangeshkar!

The phaser guitars in this song during Thendral Vanthu line i.e. pallavi - just awesome!!

    Eternal Ilaiyaraaja!

  • Really? Why should Latha Mangeshkar approve this song and IR should say yes? IR itself is very talented in whatever he does within his studio!

    Off-topic though! :

Latha Mangeshkar once left the recording studio quietly after she heard M.S.Subbalalshmi's Meera Bhajan recording; she was supposed to do a similar one, but had to shed her ego, after realizing herself! : - )

  • Really...Lataji did not consult me when she approved it and she does not have to wait for your queries either. This is a statement in an interview by Sada. I am just stating that.

I revere MSS amma. And I love Lataji's poise. I suspect you have not heard Lata's Meera Bhajans, or her Ghalib Ghazals or her Bhagavad Gita chants.

  • "Lataji did not consult me when she approved it and she does not have to wait for your queries either" ? By Sada!

"I suspect you have not heard Lata's Meera Bhajans, or her Ghalib Ghazals or her Bhagavad Gita chants."

Great! Keep your genuine guess about me and the aspiration intact, still nothing wrong with you; keep deciphering various raagas of film music, for youre your personal fame and benefits.

  • Ah, so Lata, MSS and IR are just straman - you DO actually have a problem with my deciphering ragas and my personal fame. There are at least 5 people who liked my quoting Mr. Sada. And then you come in and strike a discordant note. I saw ur comments about my Ennavale singing. Hmm..indeed, it is so easy to hit and run. I have a suggestion - if you cannot stand the heat, then get out of the kitchen.

I'll let you have the last word.

  • Correction - it should be straw man, not straman.

  • Straman (Sanskrit?), discordant, hit and run, kitchen, heat, Mr.Sada (?), I see various scattered words here and there. As long as you know what you were writing, doing, realizing your real classical knowledge without adulterating the traditional music, it is fine with me.

I am neither jealous of you nor know you personally.

  • I am not stepping on your toes to hinder your journey to your personal Walk of fame or trying to thwart attempts crossing a fragile bridge connecting Carnatic and the film music realm, carrying the so-called music conscience with ignorance on your shoulders. : -)

  • Fall on to anybodys feet for a film chance, get your face kicked by some dirty shoes if you have to, but do not claim that you know classical music at any point, abuse it, even though you are half-baked!

There are far more talented artists than you can think off, who just run their family just by performing classical arts. Grow up!

  • "crossing a fragile bridge connecting Carnatic and the film music realm, carrying the so-called music conscience with ignorance on your shoulders. : -)"

Through this statement of urs, ur blissful ignorance of Music & of the phenomenon called Ilaiyaraaja is amply clear now.

U may want to take up ur cudgels with IR perhaps, since he has used Raga Hamsanaadam & "adulterated" Carnatic Music. :-)

Ur comments r laughable at best & pitiful at worst. Pls stick around - its good entertainment! :D

  • Dude, I already read your message that you have now removed. Clearly you have stooped down to a level that you yourself are so ashamed of that you have now removed that message. As I said, it is easy to hit and run hiding from behind a PC with probably a fake user id called vensub.

I don't know what is it that is prompting you to send these messages to me, which began with your snide remarks at my deciphering the notes for Thogai Ilamyil. I am so glad that you do not know me personally!

    Peace!

  • Is that your reply for whatever I wrote? Stop being puerile and please stop your crying, I will not comment on your videos hereafter. People always delete their comments for some correction; YouTube does not allow editing our comments.

You are thinking yourself as some celebrity, so that I hide behind my PC and write comments. Pathetic, I write so many comments, you are nothing special.

  • I am not your friend so that I will be sycophantic all the time. You are on YouTube that is on the internet, where people always comment about others, not on a server hosted within your home network. : - ) Bye!

  • Thanks and good riddance.

  • Comment removed

  • If you spit another crappy cross comparison between film and the classical, I might have to back on to the ring again!

  • Oh I am so afraid...BTW I reproduce ur 1st comment and ur "objective" objection to my "comparing" a classical masterpiece to Thogai Ilamayil by Maestro IR.

You wrote: "Come on, why are you doing this comparing a film music with a classical masterpiece? Just because you are deciphering this song to almost apt Swaras, doesnt mean this piece is fully in Raag Kalyani!

Please stop doing that. Keep carnatic pristine! If you want to sing in movies, choose a different way, not this way!"

  • You wrote "Just because you are deciphering this song to almost apt Swaras, doesn't mean this piece is fully in Raag Kalyani!"

Could you please enlighten what raga this is in then? What exactly is wrong in trying to decipher the swaras, analyzing and understand how Maestro Ilaiyaraaja has tried to do compose that song using the sound frequencies in Nature that form that particular raga?

These frequencies are available freely in Nature - they are no one's personal property, least of all urs.

  • Too much sleepy now, you are awake now, will reply tomorrow. Good night!

  • You may be right; I was brought up in a different way, not looking at film songs line by line!

During my childhood, I walk to a nearby Madam, a place for many aspiring classical artists get together and practice, sitting next to many great people performing their utmost level of expertise, I was ignorant to the lowest level that time, even today. Many of the talented artists I saw during that time are still poor even now!

  • If you like IR, that is fine with me, but do not try to make me to like his classical expertise, the frequencies he creates or the attenuation that it goes through over the time whenever it reaches my ears or somebody else. I am not a VSWR (Voltage standing wave ratio) expert, to explain why it is so different.

I cannot describe too much about myself. I have my own world! You are still doing well. Take it easy.

  • @vensub sadly there are a million people out there who love and adore IR's music. I am one of them! And so sad you haven't made a name ( a fraction of what Mr. IR has) for yourself with anything huh??oh how about your blah blah? Maybe you should get an award for that! haha music is what appeals to the masses dude. I am not talking of any shitty indipop or indian pop though. This man IR is simply wonderful. Admit it dude. Else why are you here watching/listening to this stuff dude????

  • @harish118 .

When you typed, was this page black and the letters were also black? You have made a name for yourself finally.

Now turn-on your monitor and practice whatever you were typing earlier. Good luck. You still seem to be normal!

  • Learn the basic singing first; you are not doing something innovative.

Many people have this done this before, even on TV shows, briefing the Arahonam /Avarahonam, adding some alap and compare a line from some film song. Some people even search internet forums for finding the raag for a line of song and then flirt around. Do they analyze like, for instance like Kaisika Nishada (Ni 2) or Kakali Nishada (Ni 3) lively?

  • If a line from a film song most likely comply the apt swaras of certain raag, does not mean that the whole song complies that. A full-fledged classical musician will not do that kind of comparison!

Not that many film songs composed in the Ragamalika style on purpose as well.

Film songs in most situations, does not even have the Pallavi, Anupallavi, Charanam style of flow, which the classical needs.

  • Not talking about the old-time film composers like Veda, KVM or ?

I have personally come across artists composing songs based on raag. I can mix and match randomly many song, sangathi, swara, obeying the basic classical rule, do an alap to make it look like a complex classical melody. Classical musicians will never certify that type of work anytime

Most film compositions today are made that way

Do they use some complex Thala like Misra chapu or Tisra triputa? Everything is in Adhi Thalam

  • You can even write your own song(notes), based on some random humming or a preset rhythm, conduct/arrange the background score with whatever instruments you wish, obeying the basics and then finally compose one, if you happen to have the right resources and a seamless common sense.

With the current trend, using various DAW softwares, anybody can become a composer!

  • I am out of here, looking for some other so-called classical nerd! If I ever happen to see you in person in my life, I will shake hands with you like an amateur, saying you are a great musician! Bye!

Keep hearing your beloved, apocryphally phenomenal music within your mercurial world and enjoy every endorphin your brain ever produces ever and forever!

  • Ignorance is not an invited guest or an asset owned by anybody forever. It always moves around looking for various when, how, why and whom it can stay to, on its way, until the hostess learns how to get rid of it on purpose

The above quote by me may have to re-written at some point, if needed.

  • :-)

  • LOvely

  • bosss , i knw your contribution here in tube ..pls ignore those who dnt knw music and rajaa .

  • mmm....I love this song...always

  • You get goosebumps even now!!!

  • i think she host's jodi no.1.....

  • No one is posting Jodi No 1 nowadays

  • definitely its kjy...i tink i rmber seeing it at the back of the cd sumwer

  • What a pleasing voice... KJY is marvelous.. No doubt Ilayaraja too!!

  • her name z jeyasri..she did a show in suntv..itz abut sum kind of jody thing..

  • ONE OF THE CREATION OF THE MASTERO

  • One of IR;s best duets.

A major plus point of this song is of course the voice of KJY.

  • The Singer is not KJY. Its Dinesh. His voice exactly resembles that of KJY

  • Don't be funny.

This is one of those nice KJY's songs. KJY himself is on record saying it is one of favorites.

  • Your so funny. Hey BTW, is your name Dinesh?

  • thats a diff girl sandiyerr !!!!!

I dont no exactly both the girls name.

bt sure i no both are diff

  • oh my god.. the actress is the fat ass who dances in Vikram's movie called "Gemini" for the song "O-Podu"..! gosh..! so slim in this movie..!

  • This heroine's name is Jayashree. The one who acted with vikram is Rani. She was a extra dancer and ramarajan made her heroine in villupattukaran and both the actors and the movie flunked so badly. After a long time she got a chance to act with vikram.

  • This is not the same person as what ur thinking. That one dance in a song in train in the movie Kadhal Kothai n Opodu in Gemini.

  • After 25 years of this song the actress has same body man.unbelivable. I can't believe it's butter. :lol

  • How did you see here body befor and after 25 yrs?

  • oh..really? is Jeyashree still around..i thought she was married and settled in US.

  • Another Melodious number from Ilaiyaraaja . Why can't we hear this caliber of song now a days?

  • the song makes me feel relaxed and of course nostalgic!

  • Nice melody.. one of those feel good songs...

  • This song is not in hamsanadham, but in sarangatharangini..eg om namah song from idhayathai thirudathe is in hamsanadham.

another example is isaiyil thodanguthamma(Hey Ram) and Poo vasam(ANbe Sivam), both these songs are in sarangatharangini.

  • Sry aukashi poo vaasam s based on hindustani raag sudh saarang. d 1st phrase of d song which has ma(1) itself s an perfect example of dis.. nd wy i say dis strongly bcoz i ve even discussed abt dis wit d singer of this song Sriram parthasarathy.even he confirmed d same.. so poo vaasam s sudh saarang..

  • also.. Mohan (Kamal's body double)never stops amusing us. Its a miracle how this guy became popular with so many hits? Raja carried most his movies with his songs though!

  • She kind of looks like Madras Minnie Driver to me.. has very similar features..May her dad was travelling a lot:))

  • you mean her mom
