@MIDIResurrection Lots of practice...lots of trial and error. :) When I first started, it was just the melody. One hand, no chords or anything. Then I started experimenting with chords, and then I started experimenting with different ways of arranging those chords to achieve different effects (which I still do). The more you do it, the better you get, and the more fun you have. Reading up on music theory definitely helps, too. Recognizing different intervals and chord types is crucial.
@1taken Thank you for this kind of response! I see a LOT of "no sheets; played by ear" on youtube and it's actually a little discouraging. I started to get the impression that it's simply a talent that I lack - I can only do a single line melody most of the time. Not sure how I managed to convince myself that I couldn't just *practice* and get better but this is just the inspiration I needed!
@rayzorium Good! Don't worry, there aren't many people who can just sit down and improvise a fully fleshed out piano arrangement from ear the first time they try. Takes a while to figure out what works and doesn't work. It's a never-ending process, really, so the trick is to just enjoy the process and not be too discouraged when you hear room for improvement. That'll make it all the more worth it when you figure it out! :D And this isn't a super-common skill, anyway, so don't beat yourself up.
My most and best congratulations to the composer! It has been the 2min31s I have most enjoyed! I copy Mariangrl86 and say, if you ever decide to write the music sheet of this cover, I would be utterly gracious of getting them!
Once again, congrats from a Spanish follower... :)
I'm been trying to play these themes by ear for a while, and I must say my attempts aren't a fraction as awesome as your arrangements! If you ever do decide to write down sheet music in the (probably far) future, count me in to be on the waiting list. Do you think you can post up a piano arrangement of "That New Car Smell" as well? I always enjoyed that one, mostly since it's young Spock's unofficial theme. Bravo! You are an extremely talented and hard working musician!
Call me insane, but I wish this could be included on The Deluxe Edition soundtrack! There's something more haunting and powerful about this, somehow. Great job!
Nice job for playing by ear, well done. A very interesting piece for a sci-fi film score, a subtle theme running throughout which could be kicked up for action scenes. The music was one of the things I liked most about the reboot of Trek.
Since you asked for tips on improving it, I do have a suggestion that jumps out: try changing the (I'm guessing) eighth notes in the beginning with a triplet. Other than that it sounds perfect!
@millenniumfalsehood Thanks for your input! I'm afraid I'm gonna have to disagree with you, though - the rhythm in the original is definitely 1-and-(2)-and-3-e-and, the way I'm playing it. No triplets in there. :)
Yeah I know. :) Call me crazy for disagreeing with the composer, but I find triplets to sound bolder than the way it is in the original track. Just my own stubborn opinion is all. :D
An extremely well done rendition. You nailed down the nuances and the little orchestral flourishes quite nicely -- and with the piano!
I liked how Giacchino starts off with an anticipatory motif for young Kirk and McCoy as they're in the shuttle. It gave me chills down my spine when the theme bursts out with the reveal of the Enterprise. As the film is a reboot, the new theme has an "the adventures to come" air to it.
Thank you very much! =D Yeah, the score as a whole definitely gives a sense that we're at the start of something new, and this cue is especially good at that.
I agree. It's such an exciting track - especially the way the melody builds upon itself toward the end of the piece - it really feels like a massive, powerful piece of machinery powering up and coming to life while the crew rushes about to keep everything working. It's one of the best "ship leaves dock" or "mission begins" tracks I've ever heard from Star Trek, and 1taken has managed to truly do it justice.
There's definitely a great legacy of these sorts of cues in the Star Trek canon..."The Enterprise" and "Enterprise Clears Moorings" are utterly fantastic. Obviously, "Enterprising Young Men" is a very different piece, but still wonderful in its own way. I'm glad you liked my rendition! :D
Get this! Even before the ship's big reveal, you can spot her at the spacedock scene, when the shuttles are all flying toward their assigned ships. She's toward the upper right. Can't miss her!
At any given point, you're hearing it just the way I played it. I did have to do some editing because there was an annoying hissing sound every minute or so in the room where I was recording. But I didn't overlay multiple different performances on top of each other to achieve a fuller effect.
