Shame the dock is s total ripoff from the one on Suns Looking Glass Java desktop (that runs on Linux) circa 2003.

Isn't that like Start Menu on dock?

no, there is no start menu in osx. the menu is similar to the dock only in the way that both of them are used to launch applications. but stacks is a way to preview folders and open files and apps from the dock.
