By having the character rewind, the director is acknowledging that we want (or expect) to see the family win out over the killers, and he is not going to give us that satisfaction.
"Funny Games" was intended to be a commentary on violence in media, hence a scene like this one.
Hey Heineke, get off your high horse, and stop sucking so much pretentious dick. I like movies to move a little faster than a one-legged turtle. Oh, and I bet the static shot of a couch that drags on for five minutes while someone is murdered has you thinking, "I'M JACKING OFF TO THE THOUGHT OF A DUMBASS FILM PROFESSOR DISSECTING THE MEANING OF THIS."
@Vazquez122755 This movie was classified as a psychological thriller. But there's no mystery, it's not scary, and it's not complex. I don't care that it didn't have a happy ending - but I expected it to have a fucking point other than "You suck for choosing to watch a violent movie." What kind of presumptive pretentious bullshit point is that? How should I have known it was going to be a violent movie? I wanted to see a good psychological thriller. Art? No. Waste of fucking time.
ok.......im asking for a sane person that can explain me the rewind scene....was it some psychological shit that the writter thought of...well it's poor...and to my taste very unoriginal!
@Mrjablles69 No man, the rewind scene was just a pretentious way of saying "Look! This movie is unique and ironic because the characters talk directly to the audience! There is no real plot, this movie is designed mess with you." It's a gimmick.
The movie provides numerous opportunities in which triumph might be possible but rigorously checks off each one. If Haneke is teasing his audience, it's because they know the drill of how things are supposed to go, but he's not playing along.
Haneke's ultimate point is that violence is something to be feared and despised, not relished and applauded. Because we sympathize with the victims not the killers, there is no catharsis at the end. Anna does not grab the gun and wipe out her captors, as the "rewound" portion of the film suggests would happen in the Hollywood version of Funny Games.
The movie constantly breakes the fourth wall (audience). Its meant to do so...so stop wondering. It turns the rules of a horror movie against the watcher. Usually its you rewinding a scene. ;)
Lol I thought this was interesting but it was like WTF?!? since nothing supernatural or impossible had happened then all of a sudden he rewinds time. Lmfao wut?
I LOVED the idea of this scene, its reaching out to the audience. We are so used to the rule that we think exists, in which the protaginist wins, but there really is no rule to making films, and it makes you believe the good guy is going to win, but then mindfucks you, and really the antaginist is allowed to be victorius, brilliant
I watched this last night, and from this point on the movie was a total mindfuck to me.
The surrealistic aspects of the breaking of the 4th wall and the ending that explained everything was great. I can see why it would cause butthurt to people, though.
The first time I saw this, first I was "Why is he trying to find the remote after his brother died?" and then when I found the remote and he started 'Rewinding' I thought something was wrong with the DVD or something was getting fucked up on the disk
@notsoseriousanymore btw ever noticed he's saying " you're not allowed to break the rules", perhaps that's a reference to the rewind scene - because it's breaking the rules by which movies are made. i suppose it''s actually a method to get back the viewer's attention. like in the books, when you suddenly come across a sentence/word/phrase that really looks out of place. it makes you stop and think. thanks for the upload :).
thanks for being negative... go somewhere else and find this scene instead of bitching here... i COULD upload a better quality... but i wont... i wont because i don't care about you people... go away... i'm tired...

@notsoseriousanymore because I wasted 2 hours of my life watching this piece of garbage.. I don't care if some cunt like you can't stand when someone disagrees with him.. just go kill yourself, do us a favour
sooo... that's just the first thing you do when you feel injustice, or whatever the hell you want to call it... you go bother people who actually enjoyed it... you know, i bet there was an off switch, or a door you could walk out of if you hated it so much. Why would i go kill myself? because one retarded little youtuber tells me to? let me emphasize that... ONE RETARD. I would only do you a favor, and i don't feel much like doing that, and i don't feel much like wasting more time on you.
@notsoseriousanymore i finished watching to see how it ended.. and now I'm writing about how awful and pretentious the film was.. youtube is for watching videos and discussion.. I'm free say what I want here.. and no fuckface like you is going to stop me
erm... i guess i should tell you that i as the administrator of this video, i actually DO have the power to stop you... but i'm not for censor, so i'm not gonna do it, and infact, i don't remember saying you couldn't do it, i just said you shouldn't... fuckface.
erm... fuck my whole video? you're not even trying anymore, just randomly throwing curse words at me... i'm not wasting another minute on you, whatever you comment back with, will be deleted, it's useless to respond.
I personally enjoyed this film and this scene in particular because it was such a cruel "screw you" to the audience. This is more than just a 'bad guys always win' thing. It's a horror film with self awareness of the predictability of genre it takes place. It's what Scream was trying to be, but failed when it came to pointing out all the commentary of horror movies in a way that wasn't just being redundant.
In regards to this scene, Haneke, the film maker, said: "When it was rewound, there was total silence, because they understood that they had let themselves be totally manipulated. Because they had applauded a murder." What a smart ass. :P
@SnowflakeInHell Nope, this movie is great how it is. The people who don't like this movie are the people who don't realize that the director is making fun of the audience with the entire movie.
@notsoseriousanymore riiiight... it's always my little brother who did this or that... I didn't leave the insulting comment, my brother did! Ok... It's been done on youtube a million times already.
I just watched this movie for the first time and didn't understand that scene at all. Now that I have read the reviews I get it but imo was it really necessary? I understand that it pretty much is a fuck you to the audience this isn't going to be another regular somewhat happy ending but why couldn't it just be an unhappy ending without that scene? I like movies with sad or unhappy endings because the good guys don't win every time in real life.
plz don't call me stupid but i have a question... i just watched this movie and saw this scene but i didn't understand it... like how did he get that remote control and why was it there... i mean i doesn't make sense... can someone plz explain??
This scene sucks because the rewinding does not fit into the rest of the movie. I'd completely agree that the non-Hollywood ending is great, but really, it just left a sour taste in my mouth to watch them rewind it. The content just doesn't match for me.
@MMAFANtastic well, the phsycos are pretty funny, so it kind of makes sense that there is one silly scene in it. besides, whats wrong with a little self awareness?
If I remember right, Funny Games was supposed to be a jab at America's obsession with violence, especially in the entertainment industry, yet have a happy ending, more or less.
Either way, I loved this movie. (Breaking the fourth wall two or three times? Yes please!) That, and I loved the antagonists more than the protagonists. :/
i understand it's supposed to be an artsy scene, but it kind of fails i think. i guess it makes the bad guys even more unlikeable (fuck they can even reverse time?), but in the end not only is this a whole film about a horrible torture/death with no reward for the audience whatsoever (unless you're a psychopath), but also one that loves the kill so much, it turns it into an over-kill.
This film was awesome up till this point. Then it just became stupid. I don't mind a unhappy ending, and liked the realism that bad guys don't always lose. But that was just dumb.
well, if you're fine with unhappy endings, then this part is not for you. it is meant for the people who can only accept hollywood endings, and by doing this, they're breaking the 'rules', so that those people get it; EVERYTHING CAN HAPPEN, the hero doesn't necessarily win!
@Bainshie Bainshie, you can be in my 10%(and shrinking)club of non retarded people on youtube. An unhappy ending-done right-beats the shyt out of a happy ending any day,but this is just simply the gayest&worst scene in movie history, dropping a 4 star, unique horror movie to a B-grade piece of crap, simply w/better acting...the editor should be shot in the back of his emptyhead,b/c that scene defines what belongs on the cutting room floor.Pitt could've got the gun after the shot&a sad ending proceed
@notsoseriousanymore-- plz don't call me stupid but i have a question... i just watched this movie and saw this scene but i didn't understand it... like how did he get that remote control and why was it there... i mean i doesn't make sense... can someone plz explain??
I know a lot of people didn't like this, but I honestly kind of did (mostly because I was sort of rooting for the bad guys, as strange as that may be). The theme of the movie was simply entertainment (that's pretty clear when Paul talks directly to the audience twice in the movie). He grabs the remote and rewinds to emphasize the element of entertainment, to act as if he's going on a journey himself with the audience. That's my opinion, at least.
That scene would be incredible for a scary movie like parody. Paul grabs the remote, Ann sees that and reacts instantly grabbing another remote, then the 2 characters start fighting; Paul tries to rewind and Ann to fast forward. Peter rushes to the fight with a third remote to help Paul and tries to change the channel on the cable tv but he makes a mistake and switches to a documentary. A cheetah shows up following the smell from that meat Peter was eating earlier and... well u get the picture!
This is a rip off movie of all time, Yeah this scene got the audience reaction and at the same pissed off alot of people, I clearly remember everyone in the theatre shouting "money back" "money back"
@notsoseriousanymore Hey, I'm from Texas? What's that supposed to mean? lol jk. But hey, you're right about Texans. We are kind of notorious for demanding our money back when we feel that we've been ripped off. I have chanted "money back" many a time at the theater.
@notsoseriousanymore Hey, I'm from Texas! What's that supposed to mean? lmao jk jk. No, I get what you mean. We Texans are notorious for demanding a refund when we feel like we have been majorly ripped off. I have chanted "money back" many at time at the theater.
I don't understand how everyone dying but one of the psychos also dying would have been a Hollywood ending? A typical Hollywood ending would have been "the bad guys die, everybody lives". It would be small comfort rather than none at all. This isn't so much about educating the audience that formulaic endings have become predictable so much as it's about taunting the audience and cheating them emotionally in a cruel psychological experiment.
The shooting itself was already unexpected and sudden, bolder and more daring than saying "the villains will win and you can't touch them so there". It was reminiscent of early Tarantino stuff, and would have sent the message that no one is immune to violence, even those who revel in and worship it.
This scene spoiled the narrative, and perhaps more than any other aspect of the film shows the true "fantasy of violence" "psychological experiment" intent of the entire feature.
@moroni89 The scene was there to taunt the audience, to show that they could have made a hollywood ending but actively chose not to. There weren't worried about if it made sense, only about mocking the audience with the ending they thought they were going to get.
but mostly, it was to FRIGHTEN the audience, putting them in doubt of weather or not their precious main characters would survive, when they do stuff like this (breaking the rules) people tend to get afraid, because the movie doesn't HAVE to follow the 'rules' anymore, they can do whatever they like, kill whoever they want.

GAY if u like this scene or even this movie. u deserve to die and suk on my big thik stik in my pants! y would someone even like this. once again i say this is the gayest movie ever made. the creaters of this movie deserves to get sued!! this is the kind o stupid movie that makes emo people want to kill themselves. WTFFFFF!! dam this movie to hell with the dumbass people who made this! a fukin retard could do better than this. and not just a retard but helen keller! fuk this shit and the movie
learn to spell, and while your at it, get yourself a good taste, you fucking asshole. just because you are to retarded to understand it, doesn't make the creators retarded. showing this movie to you, would be like playing mozart, for a tree-frog.
yes, some people just don't get it, so i just ro'll with it. This is just a symbol of no matter how hard the family tries, there is NO escape whatsoever.
yeah this part was where a pretty good movie got weak in my opinion. If this was possible, why not just go for the remote when the killers leave and rewind time and beat them.
Go ahead hate me but i have to say this movie was stupid, i mean they rewinded fucking time! ok also somene would have noticed especailyl when she got out of the house she could have knocked on someones door. all my freiends and i lold at the end with that stupid look on the guys face.

well, if you're fine with unhappy endings, then this part is not for you. it is meant for the people who can only accept hollywood endings, and by doing this, they're breaking the 'rules', so that those people get it; EVERYTHING CAN HAPPEN, the hero doesn't necessarily win!
notsoseriousanymore 1 year ago
@Bainshie Bainshie, you can be in my 10%(and shrinking)club of non retarded people on youtube. An unhappy ending-done right-beats the shyt out of a happy ending any day,but this is just simply the gayest&worst scene in movie history, dropping a 4 star, unique horror movie to a B-grade piece of crap, simply w/better acting...the editor should be shot in the back of his emptyhead,b/c that scene defines what belongs on the cutting room floor.Pitt could've got the gun after the shot&a sad ending proceed

This is my favourite scene. I don't understand how people can not like it!
Have people forgotten the nouvelle vague so quickly that they can't appreciate self-awareness in a film?
kikis2s2 1 year ago 3
that's how i feel, i just try'n ignore those who don't seem to like it.
notsoseriousanymore 1 year ago
@kikis2s2 I love the self awareness idea and this scene is funny, but come on if he loves games so much than he shouldnt cheat if he loses

i dont care how anyone tries to say this was a move of genious....the movie still fucking sucks =)
h3ct0r182 1 year ago
I know a lot of people didn't like this, but I honestly kind of did (mostly because I was sort of rooting for the bad guys, as strange as that may be). The theme of the movie was simply entertainment (that's pretty clear when Paul talks directly to the audience twice in the movie). He grabs the remote and rewinds to emphasize the element of entertainment, to act as if he's going on a journey himself with the audience. That's my opinion, at least.
jacinda1214 1 year ago
I love that scene this is genius.

Amazing scene
ShammieJay 1 year ago
That scene would be incredible for a scary movie like parody. Paul grabs the remote, Ann sees that and reacts instantly grabbing another remote, then the 2 characters start fighting; Paul tries to rewind and Ann to fast forward. Peter rushes to the fight with a third remote to help Paul and tries to change the channel on the cable tv but he makes a mistake and switches to a documentary. A cheetah shows up following the smell from that meat Peter was eating earlier and... well u get the picture!

This is a rip off movie of all time, Yeah this scene got the audience reaction and at the same pissed off alot of people, I clearly remember everyone in the theatre shouting "money back" "money back"

so you saw it in texas then...?
notsoseriousanymore 1 year ago 14
@notsoseriousanymore Hey, I'm from Texas? What's that supposed to mean? lol jk. But hey, you're right about Texans. We are kind of notorious for demanding our money back when we feel that we've been ripped off. I have chanted "money back" many a time at the theater.

@notsoseriousanymore Hey, I'm from Texas! What's that supposed to mean? lmao jk jk. No, I get what you mean. We Texans are notorious for demanding a refund when we feel like we have been majorly ripped off. I have chanted "money back" many at time at the theater.

This scene was really unnecessary, but this movie is still great...
r3ini 1 year ago
yeah, unnecessary for some, but some of the audiences have gotten too used to automatic hollywood endings, so they need to break the rules a bit...
notsoseriousanymore 1 year ago 3
@notsoseriousanymore mmmhh...That's a great point, I think your right now.

@notsoseriousanymore
AkimboJoe 1 year ago
The shooting itself was already unexpected and sudden, bolder and more daring than saying "the villains will win and you can't touch them so there". It was reminiscent of early Tarantino stuff, and would have sent the message that no one is immune to violence, even those who revel in and worship it.
This scene spoiled the narrative, and perhaps more than any other aspect of the film shows the true "fantasy of violence" "psychological experiment" intent of the entire feature.
AkimboJoe 1 year ago
well that was a huge FUCK YOU to the audience
thekillerklown13 1 year ago 4
this scene is stupid and makes no sense there is no explanation of it whatsoever.
moroni89 1 year ago
@moroni89 The scene was there to taunt the audience, to show that they could have made a hollywood ending but actively chose not to. There weren't worried about if it made sense, only about mocking the audience with the ending they thought they were going to get.
LegendaryBlade 1 year ago
but mostly, it was to FRIGHTEN the audience, putting them in doubt of weather or not their precious main characters would survive, when they do stuff like this (breaking the rules) people tend to get afraid, because the movie doesn't HAVE to follow the 'rules' anymore, they can do whatever they like, kill whoever they want.
notsoseriousanymore 1 year ago
@moroni89 its called breaking the fourht wall, you silly little person.
