This is one of the Gram Parsons/Keith Richards collaborations that went by osmosis (Keith's term) to the Rolling Stones. Gram was interviewed saying Country Honk came first, and later they added horns and a more rock/blues
vibe to increase the potential for it to be a #1 record.
@shelovesuke So did Mick, in fact he wanted to release this version instead of "Honky Tonk Woman" but Atlantic Records told him "NO"!!! The Rolling Stones always had a thing for American country Music, "Dead Flowers", "High and Dry", "Far Away Eyes", etc.........This one is missing the fiddle track.......
It's a Cover Song - The Band Is Called :Stars At Studio 99 On The Legacy Record label .Album is called The Rolling Stones -A Unique Tribute Performed by -Stars At Studio 99 .
I fortuously bought the Let it Bleed Decca Mono album second hand in a welsh record shop in 1972, i believe this is now worth a few bob. My favourite composition from the Stones and I can even play it on the guitar
I agree, this is a great version also ... I am guessing this must be a Let it Bleed studio outtake ... It is unmistakeably Byron Berline on fiddle ... I think the final released cut is a little tighter and if you listen to Keith's intro chops on final album version they are crisper ... However, I agree with the earlier poster. The looser structure of this version showcases some great fiddle playing which is more pronounced that the final released cut ... A great post! Thanks!
I keep trying to find the version off of the "Let It Bleed" album. This one is close but it's not let it bleed. I was 20 when I bought the album, fresh home from a tour of duty in Vietnam, tooling around in my 66 Chevy Impala SS listening to this and other great stuff of the period. Wish I could give those years another go around for sure.
I was stunned when I first heard the Let It Bleed version, as I had only heard the original single version for a while. I have to say I much prefer this version (that is, the version with more pronounced fiddle) than the original; I'm more a fan of their oldest stuff, when they covered old blues and country standards.
One of the best songs ever...but...why can't I hear the violin much....it's freaking awesome on my stereo. Also, has anyone posted the version from Rock n Roll Circus? Thanks
P.S. It's hilarious when you play this song in your car and people can hear it when you're at a red light...the looks on their faces when they hear the hillbilly version of Honky Tonk Women is priceless.
god bless this track and all who listen to it. satisfaction, your a %100 right. rock on brothers,it ts the honky talk women, gimme those honky talk blues
There is no fiddle and road noise because this is only one side of the stereophonic mix. The other side (for whatever reason) is dropped.
Probably the 3.5mm connector was only 2 conductor.
