The fact that people find this remarkable just shows how stupid people can be. The hippo is just acting on instinct. It probably doesn't distinguish between the young impala and a young hippo. It knows crocodiles are its enemy and chases it off. Nothing strange about it if you don't anthropomorphize the animals and pretend it was some kind of heartfelt heroics rather than instinct.

I don't know if hippo trying to help. But, I hope you guys don't think its impossible that this could happen. Forget about this incident. Why wouldn't animals have emotions? They have a brain and emotions are important adaptations for survival. And how do we know what types of emotions the hippo have for sure? Lots of people here think animals are machines and supposed to act a certain way. I don't think thats true.

Hippo is seeking some vegetation from the impala. There is a video of a hippo supposedly eating a buffalo. The hippo just chomps down one portion of the buffalo's insides and leaves the rest. It's most likely he ate the portion holding the buffalo's last meal. The hippo in this vid is more likely trying to get the last meal that this impala ate. Impala's often regurgitate when they are killed. The hippo looks more like he's trying to work up some food that the impala ate instead of reviving it.

I wouldn't say that, exactly, for unlike humans, animals understand death's purpose and don't fear it. The first time I killed a deer we had a connection and I caught a glimpse of that acceptance. we locked eyes, he was only 15 feet away, and he took a deep breath, sighed and accepted it. I saw the calm in his eyes. I did eat the meat. I hunt for food, period.

I seen this on Austar ages ago, the hippo was territorial and didnt like the comosion of the croc and impala so went to defend its territory. The hippo actually killed the impala by bitting on the impalas head.

Something else to consider. Gators are hippos biggest rival. So much so, that a community of hippos will stand gaurd over thier own dead to keep the gators from eating the carcass. Whats interesting about this video, is that hippos are known to eat meat, however, stealing a kill from a gator or even hunting live impala at all is a strangely unique event.

1. a hippo will attack anything that ventures too close. especially a croc.

2. hippos do indeed occassionally eat meat. mainly carrion that drowns in the river. they do not bite out chunks but lick the meat.

3. not being natural predators (there is a difference between killing for food and killing for defence) the hippo is unsure of how to stop the impala moving.

if you want to check out something really bizarre in the animal kingdom look at the lioness who tried to adopt an impala.
