Yeah I used to think that too. For years I used only hand, but I find with a snare I'm able to get to the big ones at the back of the shelf that are either out of reach by hand or behind a bunch of smaller ones that spook when you go in by hand. Since I started using a snare, I've been able to get much bigger crays with a much higher success rate.
@mcbigg What technique do you use with the snare? Do you go in with it as a small noose then make it bigger nehind the crayfish?
I dive lots in NZ and only use hands, but you are right, the big ones are out of reach by hand. Thats why they are so big I guess. I want to learn how to use a cray noose.
I wish I knew how to dive for crayfish/lobsters save so much monies lolz
