They use polymers like polyurethan frothing while beeing produced. Since they have an enlarged surface area and consist of easily inflammable organic material they explosively burn down when confronted with heat.

Use a bottle sterilizer like the Avent microwave bottle sterilizer...That's what I do and have had no problems with my sponges in the microwave!
