  • Guga!! What a player he was!!

  • is this really a first serve? it looks like pete put a little kick on it for net clearance, which is why the ball bounced into guga's forehand and let him hit such a clean winner. If it was a 1st serve, normally the ball would bounce completely away from Guga. Sometimes this does happen on accident, but it seems more like a 2nd serve to me

  • It helps to be 6'3" returning those serves

  • the return was good ,pete shouldnt have come in!

  • I think that was a second serve...and Guga crushed it. I would not have reached it but I still think it was the second serve. Miss watching both these guys play.

  • Me: "WOAH. KICK ASS SERVE!"

    *Opponent does a return ace*

    Me: "wtf."

  • i like Guga but Sampras's serve is one of the best shot in history like Federer's forehand

  • that is slow motion???? ... his acceleration its incredible, my serve its slower than his slow motion ........

  • Serve was perfect, but return... WOW!

  • リターンエースとられてるやん。

  • all the credit should go right back to Sampras for the return because u cant hit such a great short angle without being that stretched out lol.

  • serve wasn't deep enough he was asking for him to eat it up.

  • a slice first serve, niccceee!

  • it clips the line, it's incredible Guga was able to return it...

  • Look how stable his entire body is on that difficult spin-body move WOW

  • poetry in motion! pistol pete is a legend!

  • @donaldcallen Absolutely agree with your analysis.

  • GUGA!!!!!

  • Why pick this first serve?

  • ahhh Sampras the last good thing in tennis for America.

  • Another great return by Guga!!!

  • is that moya????

  • @mrSnakeeye20 Gustavo 'Guga' Kuerten from Brazil.

  • @agnhayes ok thanks :P

  • @mrSnakeeye20 You are welcome!

  • Guga!

  • guga the best!!!

  • How'd the return ace work out for him?

  • GGGUUUUUUGGGAAAAAAAAAAAAAA !!!!

  • 2nd serve.... no way would anyone stand that close to the baseline to return his first

  • go guga!

  • Wonderful return by Kuerten (Guga)

  • I miss the serve and volley in todays men's tennis. Played well and beautifully, its truly tennis for the gods.

  • GuGa ruled...Amazing return ...Without taking credit to PP:-)

  • fault.

  • @theblakgeek square on the line.

  • Guga!

  • Why would he go that side if he chose to use american twist serve? Slice would make the opponent reach more, the american twist kicks towards the opponent if u serve to the left corner.

  • Beautiful Return...

  • Why did he kick it rather than slice it? It could've been further away from the returner.

  • who is the returner? Kuerten?

  • @hypercarbon Yes

  • As I practice to get better with my serve, I've come to realize how good Pete's serves were. If I can have any one swing from any pro from any era, I will take Pete's serve.

  • return ace

  • GUGA!!! You know you're old when you remember watching this match live : (

  • My grandma would have returned that too

  • Those people called you moron are the real moron man! Just keep on posting nice clips, just ignore those a-holes

  • people usually assume a first serve is a SUPER, BOOM, FAST SERVE. it isn't. it can vary from and offensive kicks or a slice also. plus this vids in slow mo.

  • Thanks for the post! Yup, Pete would occasionally mix the first serve up (like most great servers) and throw in some heavy spin...

  • toma

  • i clearly see the return...ha.ha.ha

  • federers serve is better...

  • @konvictz0007 Roddick's serve is better than Federer's...does that make him a better player? No.

  • @explodingpimp well roddicks serve is faster...but i think roddick's serve is sometimes his weakness, because he puts so much onto his serve, if the player manages to return, roddick finds it difficult to recover after his powerful first serves...

and its just not about power...federer gets a huge number of aces, but never ever serves above 130, where roddick can serve around 140-150. it shows placement is more important than speed at times...

  • @konvictz0007 All your points seem reasonable, but aren't true in reality. Yes, Roddick does get overwhelmed and lose the point when his opponent returns a monster serve. But how often does that happen? I can easily say that I've never seen a tennis player who can consistently return Roddick's first serve. Placement does have a lot to do with it, and Roddick's second serve is the prime example for that. I agree with what you're saying, I just wanna get out that a good serve =/= good player.

  • @konvictz0007 haha

  • Sampras was trying to hit a slice-kick serve and he must have goofed, cause hed never just hit a kicker to Guga's forehand.... any of the top 500 pros and many top college players can flick it for a return winner like Guga just did. Also, classical serve n volley move here.... Serve a slice in the deuce side, run like sampras is doing, and volley to the open court for a winner.

  • hey! i dont care if it was his dang first serve or not, lol. Why'd you show him getting return winner'd. (that spelling looks real weird, oh well) haha, great post but i just thought it was funny to show the great Sampras getting rocked, haha!

  • what a serve! and what a return!

  • If you notice, the ball bounces towarda the other guy after it lands. If it would of continued on it's normal path he probably wouldn't of had that good of a return

  • @linccake that's just camera angle watch it again

the serve is topspin but it looks curved because you're viewing from behind right

  • awesome serve and awesome return.

  • what a return!

    Guga !

  • Guys this is a 2nd serve with a lot of kick in it. Sampras' first one is a flat bomb

  • @foreverguga sampras' second one was flat bomb also. he was one of the 1st player to hit the second ball so hard...

  • Actually, for a serve of that speed it actually had a lot of spin on it too. Contemporaries noted not only how fast the Sampras serve was (although it was actually not the fastest on tour), but also how 'heavy' it felt off the returner's racquet.

  • @guiguitebeka Becker did it 5 years before Sampras and just as hard as sampras ever did. 125 plus.

  • @SirVetje dude that fucking pete sampras

  • omg look at the angle on that

  • @minh533 the angle's not that insane actually

  • Nice serve, but better return :P

  • going wide he should have sliced it

  • Serve and volleyers have to keep a consistent first serve, and that's the reason why hitting a little topspin on first and second serves are a good idea. The ball doesn't always have to move away on serves. In fact, as long as the ball has some action on it, it's a great serve to approach on.

  • Guga!!!

  • Sampras had the best serve in the sport.

  • the science of tennis would say he has the best serve of all time, it was like 60% of his entire game

  • @gabe228 sure but he had such a forehand and a volley.....like no one! as sharp that a gilette...

  • Comment removed

  • but if your serve is strong enough you can finish it everytime

  • serve and volley got me to champs :D

  • kuerten was no noob

  • but on the other hand you can finish points quickly without tiring yourself out like nadal

  • Hehue, Guga OWNED Pete here... :D

I remember this game. It was a great final.

  • I KNOW. i hate the serve and volley. i just chase the ball around the court.

  • what really works good is a big kick serve on the ad side of the court, to the (right handed opponent) backhand,, weak reply, easy forehand volley winner into the open court.

  • i dont think it would be a good idea to serve on Kuerten's backhand

  • that almost looked like a huge kick serve rofl

  • When you serve and volley, you prefer consistancy over power. Basically, you sacrifice soem power for some more top spin.

Not a kicker, not a flat serve, somthing in between.

  • Nice return...

  • GUGA Kuerten!!! He's Awesome! hhhahah

  • it was a drop kick serve in perfection. Also Becker did that kind of service.

  • wat a serve.. but whaaat a return!!

  • GUGA! GUGA!

  • dang, what a return.

  • Yeah, Kuerten was all over it. He had Pete's number just before Pete retired and Kuerten got injured.

  • top spin serve second serve flat

  • He has a nice serve but it would be better if he got an ace instead of losing the point

  • Is it just me or he isn't follow throughing enough? or maybe a serve that i dont know of?

  • what does he know? he's only the best ever. maybe you should give him lessons

  • lol, i dunno

  • that´s Gustavo Kuerten, O cara, VIVA O BRASIL CARALHO!!!! HAHAHAHA

    ABRAÇOW GRINGAIADA

  • Nice kicker...Pete should of went down the middle with it.

  • Wow he got owned!

    But very nice serve

  • Sampras was great and he had 100 of better moments than this serve lol.. You really should change the video's name to "Guga's reply to Sampras"

  • ohh so it is kuerten lol...i saw his hair and was like...Kuerten? lol

  • Dude next you should change your videos title to GUGA's return AH!

  • It's still a good serve. Guga just decided for the "right" site. And in the end, Pete won the match.

  • definately a topspin 2nd serve. Not a "typical" sampras 1st serve.

  • Oh my God it's GUGA!

    Man i miss him!

It's because of him i learned the super western grip. :D

  • ...the what? I'm going to assume you mean extreme western.

  • Thats Gaudio i believe, im not sure how to spell his name.

  • that's Gustavo Kuerten, O cara.

  • Esse eh o guga!!! ele era foda pa carai!!

    dava pau ate no sampras!

  • amazing return!

  • owned

  • pega essa direita!

  • it was returned...

  • That's just how S&V goes. You will get passed a lot no matter who you are. You just have to succeed more than you fail.

  • yeahh that's pretty clearly his second serve

  • It was a first serve. He just chose to go for more spin than usual.

  • @shredder1316 yeahh people always place second serves on the line out wide because thats so high percentage...

  • @shredder1316 yeah first serve out wide with some kick but i think guga was leaning that way before the serve got hit so guga guessed right

  • yes it's 2nd serve

  • @megadesiro No, it's not.

    heavy slice/kicker.

  • @shredder1316 Sampras pretty much hit topspin serves for both his serves, that is why his serve was so difficult to return. On his first serve, he frequently got the ball spinning up to 2500 rpm. That, and the fact it was usually 120 mph and nearly impossible to read, made Sampras' serve nearly unplayable on some days. A sure way to tell if this was his first or second serve would be to look at the location of the ball toss, except the ball is out of the screen when he hits it.

  • that's not his first serve..

  • It was a great serve the guy just did a beautiful return.

    TennisPlaza

  • Guga > Life.

  • The name of the "opponent" is GUSTAVO KUERTEN.

    Needless to say anything else.

  • ROFLMAO!!! Did anyone find it funny how this video focuses on Sampras 1st serve but yet it gets owned by the opponent's return? This is meant to be some hidden humour by the poster right? haha

  • Ateh que o saque foi mais ou menos, mas a devolucao do Guga foi muito melhor.

    Go Guga Go

  • wack ass serve he couldnt return his own serve

  • Tennis Judo!

  • great serve.

i think he could have made it to the return though.

  • what a serve!

    what a return!

  • great return

  • I guess that was a first serve slice...

but I don't know at first I was thinking it was going to be a second

  • Sampras has the most effective serve>

  • hehe Sampras wasn't expecting that

  • Nice return, Guga owns!

  • Nice return.

  • king of swings

  • guga owned that serve

  • watch my serves

  • Nice return..^^

  • It was a good serve, right on the line, but Guga just hit a great return...he anticipated it out wide and cut it off before the ball could spin away from him

  • BTW, please keep the tone civil around here. I just removed a post that called me a moron for saying it's Pete's first serve.

Also, remember that I'm the one who recorded the video - and this was in fact the first serve he hit on that point.

  • Since people keep arguing: Technically it's the first serve he hit on that point. But because he used a lot of spin it looks more like a second serve.

  • yes, this is his second serve, not first

  • This is Pete's second serve.

  • Such an awesome serve, but the returner got lucky. It happens. Big deal. Pete is still going to win that same battle 3 out of 4 times, so he won't get hung up on the 1 out of 4. That's how a champion thinks.

  • obviously second serve since the ball contact point is close to the net. common to serve executed with a lot of spin. well anticipated by the opponent.

  • not that i really care, but regardless of whether this was his 1st or 2nd serve, this is Sampras' 2nd serve...maybe he just hit it as the first serve.

  • wow that return is amazing...

  • Some first serve, he lost the point.

  • One thing about his motion before striking the ball--you have no clue where it's going. See at 11 seconds, he could go anywhere with this motion, never know till he flicks racket down and strikes ball. Such a beautiful motion!

  • ONE HELL OH A RETURN

  • His first and second serves are very similar, but I think it's a second, there's much more kick

  • A huge fan of sampras,iv noticed he always arches the back more on the second serve for extra slice or kick. This clip is'nt a 1st serve. even the young splendid1000 can see that. also wheres kuerten now?

  • last i heard he was tryng to pull a comeback

  • well, his hip has been severely injured and he got 1 or 2 surgereys and he tried to make another comeback but now he's actually gonna do a final tour of all his favorite tournaments and retire

  • kuerten play this week at miami! but he loose against grosjean! it will be his last year, guga will play at monte-carlo and roland-garros and then finish...

I saw in a record, the final Sampras/kuerten at Miami 2000! this slow motion is a second service from Pete at 5/4 in the second set for pistol Pete! Guga had just got the break, exactly at that moment!!!

  • show one where he hits an ace, not being passed

  • Am i right thinking This is sampras 2nd serve not 1st?.

  • yes, gotta be 2nd

  • It's in slow-mo and the ball hit the line. Therefore, it's a 1st serve. The guy across court guessed correct and hit a great pass.

  • He wouldn't be able to hit a pass on a 1st serve.

Oh, and what does it being in slow-mo and the ball hitting the line have to do with it being a first serve? That's ridiculous.

Also, you can see that Sampras arches his back more and hits a kick serve, which he doesn't do on his first. It's a second.

  • LOL! Kuerten owned him!

  • of all the pete highlight clips... why post one where he gets owned? despite the on-the-line serve.

  • Western is hard to serv with, but you can do it.

  • actually u can serve western because here is a kid in my tennis clinic who serves western. He is a right handed tennis player. When I play him, I could hit it back easily, but the tricky part is where you will predict it to land. I am just sayin that western grip serves are real serves and you can use em if you adapt to them.
