Originally, it was the rule that fencers wore black (much like it is the rule that fencers wear white nowadays). I believe they changed it to white some time in the 1930's.... Anyway, since it is classical fencing, I'd imagine they'd use equipment more from that period. That's just my theory...
Expensive? Classical fencing all you need is a foil, mask, glove and jacket. Easily obtainable for $500 or less. What's a decent set of golf clubs, $1,000 or more? A two ball setup with shoes, glove and bag for bowling, $500? Decent tennis racquet and shoes, $300? It's all relative.
While the equipment isn't so bad, lessons can be prohibitively expensive depending on where you study. Clubs in my area charge more than $100 a month, which many people can't afford. I charge less than half that for historical fencing, and even then people find it expensive.
Nice videos. Slow motion would help. Web site is informative. Do you know how the "Classical Italian School" is viewed by the Italian "sport" fencers i.e. Stefano Cerioni --Cassara--Baldini ? Just curious. I like the final attack to flank in the video.
person in shorts has a bad habit of jumping up from his back foot when he lunges, basicly removing any distance he could have from the action, hsould watch that.
just a few words...wearing black makes points hard to see, please don't wear shorts becuase you can get hit on the knees, keep those back legs straight, and back feet on the ground...however, 1st nice fencing I've seen in a while, good work! :)

@Senecart81 Harsh criticism for a 20 second snippet of footage.

In the 1910's italian fencers in milan wear white jacket and black trousers, that come on white later.
Anyway the video was not mean to be a reenactment of that period but just a bout of classical fencing, as good as possible.
Clothes are not essential to reproduce an historical fencing discipline. Sword and tecnique do.
I am the one on the right, showing my un experience on the matter.
PS black fencing suite is back again , in kevlar, in a fencing equipment firm in Milan. ;-)

The bad thing about fencing is that it's such an expensive sport.

I was talking of the one on the right :) If he is a student, then he should not be wearing black.
