Throwing it around and crashing into it with a skateboard gives it a kind of 'lived in' look. Many basses look like that but normally because they are about 40-50 years old, have been played thousands of times at gigs and been taken around the world dozens of times. Adam Clayton in U2 uses 2 basses that have that 'worn out' look but that is because both were made in 1964, some 46 years ago. 'Scratched' is how a bass should look. New and shiny doesn't make it a 'real' bass for a touring musician.

@FluroTEE If you really wanted to do it, take the neck of so that it doesn't get misaligned, then take all the electronics out and replace them afterward, pickups and everything. I'd only do it if your bass was made from a very dense wood. It's more trouble than it's worth if you ask me, especially since you could ruin the bass.

@AlexD907 Road worn means what it says: worn on the road -> while playing and touring. Specially ravaged instrument is not authentic to me in terms of being "road worn". When i gets damaged while playing it aquires a soul and spirit. The other way it's...you know...not :D

If he was breaking it he would have thrown it straight down - he was "distressing" the finish so it had some character - if this was a vintage instrument I'd be miffed at him doing that, but it's not. The only thing I'd add is that he should have taken the electronics out first, they can get messed up from all that.
