I don't remember this song from the 80's. I was on 41st and Filbert in Philly in the latter 90's. That's when I first remember hearing it. Never knew who it was by, though. The song was on my mind tonight...(go figure) so, I put a keyword into a search and found it!!!! I love this song! Through other posts I see that this songstress has passed. Good job, Gwen! You blessed me with this song and now it's in my FAV's for keeps. Holla.
For me, this brings it back to Brooklyn in the 80's...hangin out on St.James Pl. between Gates and Greene avenue, ...this song will lay in the epitome of great songs from the 80's, now, why in the Hell isn't it on Itunes...It's a classic. RIP. Gwen Guthrie
Timeless classic for sure!!! Unfortunately, I was in junior high school when this came out and hate that I missed going to the Garage in NYC by a few months (went to my first club in March 1988 and the Garage closed in '87)! :(
I'm 40 years old and I can't get enough of this music. Listening to Gwen immediately puts me in a good mood. Great time for music, clubs and all around fun filled nights! Sad she passed away...
Man does this song & Aint nothing going on the but the rent bring back a flood of memories from the 80's. This song used to be killed at my grandparents basement parties. My cousins from Cali visiting during the summer. Cookouts with my cousins from Paterson. Love all my family. Good times indeed!
This song was so hot back in the day,the dance floor stayed crowded on this and my girl loved to dance and use to make me dance and problem is, i can't dance. I knew people were laughing at me but so what i still had fun. I may be blk but i was born without any natural rythm.
Gwen was the best. We loved all of her tracks in Detroit and would dance the night away while her voice was blaring thru the bass cells... RIP Gwen. Your music lives forever...
Gwen Guthrie sang with a smile in her voice and loads of soul. Glad she was able to have so many albums for 1 not a household name but for the hit 'Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But The Rent', an anthem if ever there was 1. It could be used today, for the self-centric nature of the 21st century so far. She could SANG, played, arranged, and 1 of the few women producers at the time. RIP Gwen. Mega Talent! : )

Awesome song, this came out when I was in 8th grade going into my freshman year of HS way back in 1985 when life was awesome, LOL, now I am old 40, LOL.
Now this is music...... A young girl with a tremendous talent and a voice to die for. All she wanted was everyone to enjoy her music and not seeking fame. This is what AMERICAN IDOL FANS should be inspired by. America difinitely Got Talent. SHE PROVED IT !!!!
I've been looking for this song for years my mom,me and aunts used to jam on this back in the day. This is what you call party music...what you know about that?
yes indeed...the magic that was the 80's with the clubs, the vibe and this kind of music...STILL sounding good after all these years. Glad I was there when it happened...there will NEVER be another time like this...these artists (who were REAL artists, not just entertainer/performers). @SOLOAS Must have been a heck of a small nightclub...what with a whole bunch of you dancing on an LP....LOL..just kidding you bro...I understand fully..just could not resist..LOL
LOVE GWEN.... I special time.... she was Gracious and performed at Club 88 and Club Zanzibar... they were "local" and in her "hometown". Gwen would sometimes double park outside of Club 88 in her big Benz and chat with Club 88 staff or whomever said hello... she was so personal.... and laid-back... Thank you sister Gwen... b..
Yes, the music and the feeling that came with this music during our era. It is lost and never can be repeated. This brings back so many memories of the clothes the dances .
sexyretardedsexy, has a brain deficit ... Britney will never measure up to Gwen Guthrie, vocally. You see, Gwen could SING, & Britney just entertains. Dated or not, old school is the reason that she is popular. Even Madonna had to give it up to the music scene of Yesteryear.
It's not easy to hear, however, Britney is a tabloid, when singers used to be loved for their TALENT instead of what they wear, who they sleep with, & what drugs they are on.
@sexyrexysexy LOL I'm not retarded. You said it not me. Then why say it then, that Gwen's music is dated crap? Britney doesn't sound better than Gwen. That was funny about Madonna.
@schildno5 I'm joking tiger xx It must be the Ausralian sense of humour.. Gwen is an absolute gun of a vocalist. Britney is the other exreme (SHITHOUSE) xx
@schildno5 It is not dated at all. Gwen shits over half the artists (or hookers) anyday. Their music sounds dated after a few years, this is classic. OMG What am I dealing with!!!!!!! Madonna is a worn out old Italian grandmother, she reminds me of sophia from 'the golder girls,' but in tights......
I feel bad for you. Paradise Garage was a LEGENDARY club in NYC. You had to be a member to get in and membership only became available once a year and the lines were stoooopid long. Gwen, Madonna and countless other performed there along with LENGENDARY DJ's...days looong gone
I can't believe the little amount of views......... Just goes to show how commercialised music is. Ie britney gets 2 million +.... Who is the better vocalist, and which music is timeless?? MAKES ME FUCKING SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NO SHIT!! (But Britney is better!!!)) HHHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm (Joking tigger) Go Gwen! Life cut short to soon (like Minnie)
NYC 98.7 Kiss FM with Kenny "Spidey-Man" Webb, Carol Ford and Bugsy. Me trying to catch this jam with my finger on the "stop" button as I taped it. Wow memories!!
Thanks for posting this! And thanks for the images from the Paradise Garage. I had many a night dancing until dawn there in the late '70s and early '80s. The dancing was so intense it was spiritual, would lift you off the floor. Love this Gwen tune, a classic.
I want to thank you for the nice comment. Glad you like it. One of those tracks always find the way straight to my soul. Like you said, spiritual ! All the best for you...
RIP Gwen! This was the joint my Senior Year at Lincoln High in Jersey City. This was playing on our exit day party. Brings back lots of memories--23 years ago.
Thank you for allowing me to relive a great moment.Makes me want to go clubbing except, I'm too old and all of the good spots are long gone along with the crowd.Gwen left her mark on house music.
I dont know who posted this song, but I AM TRULY THANKFUL. This is my all time favorite song from the 80's era and my favorite singer as well. OMG, I can't believe that it is finally posted. I have been asking for a year or so to have this posted. If there is anybody out there that remembers "The Cue Club" and "The Oar House" in Norfolk, Virginia will remember this song. Thanks again.
Thx donalldbyrd. I guess I am just like you. A guy who will never forget this great time. The sound was fantastic. I have many 12" vinyls and when I have some free time I will post some of my top favorites.

Thanks for posting this! And thanks for the images from the Paradise Garage. I had many a night dancing until dawn there in the late '70s and early '80s. The dancing was so intense it was spiritual, would lift you off the floor. Love this Gwen tune, a classic.
